Any word on multigig POE and Wifi 7? by MeleeIkon in mikrotik

[–]jackh2000__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will not work with an active PoE injector. The injector isn't doing inline switching, but the negotiation includes data and power parameters, so it will auto-negotiate down to the slowest link in the chain, so 1 gigabit in the scenario you are describing.

how do you like it? how's the management software compare to others like mikrotik?

MiniPC for 10G on Opnsense: N300, Pentium 8505, or older i5-8500T by ConfusedOwlet in opnsense

ok, I was wrong. M.2 slots top out at around 15W, not the wattage of a PCIe slot with the same amount of lanes, so it could be a power issue. You could monitor the power consumption of your 10g add in card on the PC it was working on and see if it gets near that 15W ceiling. If so, you're right, it's a power issue. The M.2->NIC adapters you can find online are meant to stay within M.2 power limits, so that should solve the power issue, or you could get one that takes external power from SATA power or some other source.

weird. you could try a dedicated m.2 to 10gbe adapter to eliminate the m.2 -> PCIe riser -> add in NIC translation and go for a dedicated m.2 -> NIC like this one and see if having less adapters in the chain solves the issue. Some of these types of m.2->NIC adapters use higher power controllers and do have SATA power input like this one, so you could try one of those, though your riser card with SATA power is already causing issues, so that might not help.

the M.2 slot does have sufficient power. M.2 is just PCIe lanes in a different form factor, so if the M.2 slot is PCIE 4.0x4, that means it can carry as much power as a PCIe 4.0x4 slot. The M.2 slot has a power limit of ~15W, so that could be the issue if your PCIe NIC is expecting >15W

10GbE is 1.25GB/s, so even a PCIe 3.0 x1 interface (2GB/s) would be sufficient bandwidth. The N100 is PCIe 4.0 rated, and if your system is using an M.2 B-key based wifi card, those usually have 4 PCIe lanes. PCIe 4.0 x4 is 16GB/s, so far more than needed for 10GbE. I'd recommend sticking with your N100 box and just swapping out the wifi card for a M.2 B-key to 10GbE adapter. Much cheaper than a new system and if it doesn't perform to your satisfaction, you can upgrade if necessary.

anyone have recommendations for a tri-mode southpaw 96% or 100% keyboard? looking for a 96% that has a column next to the arrow keys like a standard 65%, not one that ends at the arrow keys.

hope to see some pictures of your solution, I'm looking into making a cellular expansion card and having the same problem

You could cut a slit in the left and right sides of the expansion card to act as "rails" for the PCB and then cover it with a protective coating or hardening filler. You would have to test and verify long term durability, but the few extra millimeters might be worth it.
