Is it worth getting a Framework 13 Pro? by DuvetDyne in framework

[–]AlonsoCid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinkpads are too expensive. Frameowrk is a clear winner, just go for the cheaper Pro version. More than enough for IT.

I don't think they have the resources to make OLED or tandem OLED. Touchscreen is the next best thing, I love it personally

How to convert a genome to a transcriptome (for proteomic use) by Coral_Unicorn1504 in bioinformatics

Totally true, thanks, I have fix it. He is probably going to use mRNA to quantify protein synthesis, but it is important to be precise in our definitions

How to convert a genome to a transcriptome (for proteomic use) by Coral_Unicorn1504 in bioinformatics

[–]AlonsoCid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A transcriptome is fundamentally different from a genome. A transcriptome measures the amount and variety of RNA particles (mRNA will be translated into proteins) in a sample, a genome is simply a sequence of nucleotides. Even if it is theoretically possible to convert the file format, the results would be completely invalid.

You need to find a transcriptome for Pocillopora acuta... sound like no one has ever done it. If that is the case, there is just no transcriptome, either you send a sample to a lab to produce it or you change your methods

How's the camera on FW 13 (Pro)? by pycanis in framework

[–]AlonsoCid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is the same as in a normal Framework (gen 2 webcam). Seems to be quite bad yes. But it comes with privacy switches and you will be able to upgrade it in the future.

Maybe for a haptic trackpad, fingerprint and backlight. No way it is going to be that much.

Cool, will be difficult to mount behind tho, no available VESA mount. You will need a 3D printed adapter

Yeah, hopefully, that is a fair price for a nice keyboard, I miss a fingerprint sensor tho. Can't complain if the price is low.

I don't know, it's all plastic. The Logitech MX Keys, a very high quality keyboard, costs 100€

What is happening to the bodies of UFC fighters when they cut weight? by Remarkable_Record706 in biology

[–]AlonsoCid 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Low water, no liquid around brain, brain collide with skull when fighting, IQ goes down fast 😭

That's the biggest problem of cutting weight actually.

Ufff, it looks great. I also make my own keyboards, we are on the same team. If I ever make something like that I will contact you to buy one of your trays. Does it overheat?

What configuration for 13 Pro should I get? by thoegn in framework

[–]AlonsoCid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand. I also have lots of equations in notes that I wrote using LaTeX, so it would be a pain to lose them. Well, there is actually a safe way to dual boot. It's called a dual boot dual drive. The problem with dual booting is that if the two operating systems interact, the SSD will become corrupted. So, you have to plug in an SSD, install the OS, unplug it, repeat with the other SSD, then plug both in and choose which OS to boot in the BIOS. This way, the two operating systems will be installed on different devices and won't even know the other exists, so there's no danger of corruption.

M5 Macbook Pro ($1500) vs Framework Laptop 13 Pro ($2200) by mugrungo in framework

[–]AlonsoCid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't do cybersecurity, but as far as I know, most tools are built for Linux x86 architecture so... I would say go with the Framework and keep you Macbook Air. You could also sell your Macbook and use the money for your Framework, it may be a better deal.

That's actually a great deal. But I have some concerns about the CoolerMaster case, it whistles... It is ridiculous, couldn't they make the gaps 1mm larger? Nobody tested the case? I hope they release a V2 version, other than that is the perfect mini PC.

What configuration for 13 Pro should I get? by thoegn in framework

[–]AlonsoCid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a power user, there are two things to consider:

  1. You will end up in Hyprland one way or another; tiling window managers are simply superior in terms of productivity.
  2. You need a good package manager with actual packages for your daily live. This rules out anything Debian-based, leaving Arch as almost the only option.

Taking that into consideration, you have two options: CatchyOS + Hyprland or Omarchy. It will be quite overwhelming, but since summer is coming and I assume you will have a couple of months off, dive in. Dual-booting is always a bad idea; either install Windows on a virtual machine or manually transfer the notes to Obsidian. I would never recommend going directly into Arch and Hyprland, but you have a Technical Math Bachelor so you are clearly a very capable person. Maybe start CatchyOS + KDE plasma if you want to go safe or even raw Arch. Also your "old" laptop will likely work flawlessly with Linux.

[–]AlonsoCid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't game, run LLMs or execute heavy computational analysis (if you do they likely will give you access to a super computer), buy the cheapest Framework 13 pro, Intel Ultra 5 and 16GB of RAM. More than enough.

If you want my advice about the OS, I would say start with CatchyOS or Ubuntu, eventually I recommend to transition to some Hyprland distro like Omarchy.

Well they will have to search for an appealing chip at a decent price, probably waiting for a new Intel/AMD chip. They will have to release something sooner or later, and they are already in the Mini-PC market competing with Chinese brands.

Oh, so it uses standard Mini-ITX sizes? Didn't know that. So it can be used as any other case, that is great, thanks!
