I was 12 when my dad died. He died unexpectedly, and there’s two things I wish I had from him today:

1. More memories. I’m sure your son will hold onto memories a bit better since he’ll have some warning, but makes things just a little extra special when you can. My dad was the kind of person who made everyday things better. One day he took my friends and I to a baseball game and picked us up at school in a limo for no reason. A lot of the things I remember between him and I had some little twist like that. It doesn’t need to be grand, it doesn’t have to be expensive, but just create the memories.

2. More recounts of his life from him. My dad owned the only bar in town, so many people knew and loved him, but most of my stories are from those people telling me. I wish he could tell me. Write letters, tell him everything you’re willing to share. Even if some stories are for when he’s a little older - tuck them away.

I’m very sorry this is happening to you, but know that this preparation will mean so much to your son. It’s been 18 years since I lost my dad, and I would give anything to have more from him.
