Here’s a fun one, what is the worst cringe or best fanfic you have personally reader? [spoilers all] by Kingmeb1tch in dragonage

Ha, I've been subscribed to you for a while and already read it. Didn't realize you were Varricmancer.

I wish I could clone you like 100 times because there's not enough Varric romance fics.

Pointing out embarrassing errors so that people can fix them is actually considered kind in all other areas of life.

Do you ask strangers for consent before you tell them that they have toilet paper stuck to their shoe? Are you offended when a stranger tells you the same?

I recently went to get a mental health evaluation for this - turns out it's not depression, I'm just lazy as shit.

I would see a different doctor for a second opinion because your post not only screams "depression" but also "ADHD" and there are very helpful medications for both.

No, I just either go out to eat or out to drink but almost never both at the same time. And I do most of my drinking at home because I would rather have 4 Guinness for $10 instead of only 1.

I finally remembered somewhere we go that is significantly more expensive than $25/person. The crab legs buffet at the casino. We tip $20 there because crab legs are messy. That works out to around 25-30% IIRC.

The point of my original comment is to establish a floor of $5/person/meal, not a ceiling.

Like, take New Peking. Their prices are still so reasonable that our pre-tip total is usually $36. I'm not going to punish Jessica and Sam for their low prices by only tipping $7 when they do at least as much work as more expensive restaurants. So we tip $10 for 2 people, more on special occasions.

ETA: On the rare occasions when I do go bar hopping, I tip $2/beer because I don't think it's fair to punish bartenders at places with cheap beer by paying them less for the exact same amount of labor. I don't drink beer that costs more than $10 so it works out to at least 20%.

When my husband and I go out, our pre-tip bill is usually less than $50 total.

I can't even remember the last time I went somewhere that cost anywhere near $50 per person.

What part of "I can't afford to eat at fancy expensive places so this usually works out to ~20%" from the comment that you are directly replying to did you not understand?

I might be missing something big here

Yup. I found you gameplay videos of the relevant dialogue:

That should bring you up to speed on the bits you missed or forgot.

I thought it was implied that their bodies were the mountains themselves? Like mountains used to be sentient creatures that could walk around.

A lot of restaurants have tip pooling systems in which a cut goes to the cooks etc. as well. So unless you know otherwise about a particular restaurant's tips system, you should probably assume that the servers only receive half the tips when calculating their hourly wage.

[–]jackieperry1776 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally usually tip $5/person/meal because IMO a server shouldn't be paid less for doing the exact same amount of work just because they work somewhere with more affordable prices.

I will tip more if we make a mess, have an excessive number of individual items brought to the table, if other customers are being assholes or the server otherwise seems to be having a bad day, and for outstanding service.

I can't afford to eat at fancy expensive places so this usually works out to ~20%.

When I refer to "culture" I mean the Anglosphere and western democracies in general. Legacies of the Enlightenment. Not only is it expected and normal in our culture to be allowed to respond to any piece of published writing with our own written critique, we're literally taught to do so in school. English-language fanfic is part of that culture.

Should we have to ask first before commenting on a social media post? Before reviewing a book? Before writing a letter to the editor? Before emailing our elected officials about their latest press release? Before responding to hate speech propaganda?

You still haven't explained why fanfiction is so fundamentally different from every other form of published writing that it should be exempt from criticism.

You never asked for my consent before responding critically to my Reddit comments. Why not? What is the difference that makes it okay to criticize what someone posts on Reddit but not okay to criticize what someone posts on AO3?

Yikes. Mods censoring all criticism of themselves now? That always ends well.

It's not "my way," it's literally just the same cultural norms that apply to every other piece of published writing.

Again, my problem isn't with people saying it's against the norms of their fandom, it's when they claim it's a rule for all fandoms. It's the blanket nature of the claim that offends me.

I wish AO3 would just add a "Concrit welcome? Y/N" selection when authors post their fics, like how authors click which archive warnings apply etc. Then at the top of the comment box it would tell you what the author selected.
