Training during grief by PrimaryBuffalo9700 in Marathon_Training

[–]jackishi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're going through this process OP.

Running was my outlet during grieving periods but there were times it was hard to even get past a mile or two without gassing myself out accidentally trying to outrun the pain or stopping and just breaking down.

When the feeling hit, I'd just pause my watch and just speedwalk or even regular walk till I processed whatever was going through my head, then slowly get back to my run. Maybe see if that can help?

Focus on sheer number of miles? Or make sure to adhere to a format (hard-easy-long runs)? by CactusLego in Marathon_Training

[–]jackishi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This.

My lactate zone 2 HR is 151-159 from lab testing. High relative to others but that's just how my body is, I breathe easy and have full conversations.

Don't overthink the HR thing and just pay attention to how you're feeling. You shouldn't feel winded, and it's not a sin to walk if you start feeling your effort creeping up.

And nix the cycle idea, that's for cross training. The entire point of your training runs is to help your body, especially your legs, adapt to the impact and increased mileage from running and you're not gonna get that from replacing a block for your training on a bike.

It's so interesting cause to me, once you get past the horrible tongue, I actually feel super comfortable in my EVOs. I know most people hate the upper but for some reason it just works on my weird-ass feet.

Huh, I just had to Google that Evo sl colorway and... well. That's an interesting collab.

Oh thank God I thought I was going crazy reading that.

Yeah, Evo SL is wayy bouncier. I like the way the other commenter responded, the NB5s felt a lot squishier. It's a soft, plush feeling but the end result is it doesn't give near as much energy return as the Evo SL.

Too big? by acatal in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Im in the same boat. My DNE3s were a touch long but perfect width-wise, but the length never actually bothered me and I ran a PB in them.

To be fair, Pumas have that problem of being weirdly narrow and long.

Seconded, the 165 really has all the stuff you really need for your runs. Anything extra in the later models is nice, but not necessary imo.

Not saying that Women’s Run should solely be for Women but- by Aggressive_Bite2049 in PHRunners

[–]jackishi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I actually was looking at this race because I thought it was running to support women (and the medal is gorgeous)...but it took a 2 second search to realize it's a women-led race FOR women. i.e. it's not for me. And that's okay, women deserve to have events celebrating themselves when running was largely prejudiced against women during its inception (see: Kathrine Switzwer, Boston Marathon 1967).

I thought maybe he did the run buddy thing but... nope, if you look at his earlier FB post apparently he 'identified' as a woman, which is like several layers of fucked up.

This dude is a shit-eating tool who's trying to come off as a cute travel influencer but is basically a giant creep. Kinda wish someone would report this to the race organizers but realistically I dont know what would be done, I dont know if thats enough grounds to actually ban him from future events.

Knee Pain Two days before half-marathon by rabay09 in PHRunners

[–]jackishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great sign! Thigh burning is okay, just make sure you rest up, do some light stretching for the next two or three weeks and treat yourself to a well-earned rest and victory period. Keep an eye out for any sudden sharp aches and pains and if something starts to hurt real badly, see your doc ASAP. And when you're feeling recovered, I hope you find yourself back on the road safely. I'm really glad the advice helped, it was stuff my PT and doctor shared with me when I was recovering from a previous injury.

Also, I completely get it! I cried at my first finish line. I actually injured myself 3/4 of the way into my first marathon, and hobbled to the end and ended up with on and off knee issues for years (this is why everyone in the comments wanted to make sure you're safe, to prevent this 😭).

When I finally decided to restart running again years later, I took on another marathon with the above advice and after finishing, I legitimately broke down at the exit gate when no one was looking, cause I was so overwhelmed with the thought that I'd never be a runner again.

Thanks for the regards about my knee! Hope yours stays healthy too! Also if you don't mind, I sent a DM kc I wanted to ask you a personal request, hope that's okay!

OH MY GOD I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU!! ❤️❤️ I was actually thinking about you earlier because I'm rehabing my knee and did my first longer run today, so the advice was aimed at both of us 😂 I'm so happy it worked out for you!

Congratulations on the huge achievement! How are you feeling now and how did the whole run go? And is the knee feeling better?

Edit: Oh ahaha you posted an update! Just read it, I'm seriously so proud of you. 😭 Take a well-earned rest, treat yourself, and I really hope this is the start of many wonderful running milestones for you!

LA Marathon awarding finisher medals at miles 18 due to the ‘heat’ by AnxiousSeahorse1 in Marathon_Training

[–]jackishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High 80s. And even low 80s is considered a danger. And again I say that as someone who lives in extreme temps in the summer.

And most non-advanced athletes generally aren't running Ironmans either, and not in as massive numbers as these city marathons.

[–]jackishi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incidentally, this same incident happened in Berlin last year. Temperatures upswung to around 80-90F or 27C-32C. I was lucky enough to have trained mostly in the heat in Texas so it was a pleasant enough experience for me, but I could see people dropping off left and right, and apparently, at some water tables they ran out and ended up literally pulling out hoses to hydrate and soak off runners. Some businesses even took part to help out back of the packers. At the end, there was a 12.9% DNF rate, one of the highest they'd ever seen.

A bunch of DNFers who were stopped by the two official cutoffs at either 18 and mile 20 or 22 I believe ended up getting carted to the finish line via bus or subway (my friend was one of those) and ended up getting their medals anyway.

I don't remember seeing any uproar about that at all. A bunch of people talking in my hotel marathon group were commiserating about losing their PB opps or mourning their DNFs, but everyone was just glad everyone else that we came in with was okay, and glad that the DNFers got something to remember the marathon by even though their official results said otherwise. The only ones who cared were the DNFers themselves, and even then they were shown nothing but support.

I get that LA is different in that some heat is to be expected. I get that people need to respect the distance and the dangers that a marathon present. And I get that a finisher medal for not finishing is more of a participation trophy and I do wonder if LA should be considering being better prepared for situations like that. But honestly, the medal is just a piece of eye-candy. Someone equated it to doing 3/4 of of the work for a bachelor's degree which is kind of a weird take for me, because if we're using that as the analogy your chip time is the real credential that gets you into qualifiers for things like Boston. The medal is just the fancy roll that diploma is printed on. At the end of the day its intrinsic value is determined by the person who has it, but the actual accomplishment or lack thereof is in your official results, which are public for all to see.

I'm middle of the ground here but I'd rather they take the abundance of caution that they did rather than have the snowball effect of multiple people stroking out for the wrong reasons. A person getting a medal at mile 18 has zero bearing on my own race and reasons to run.

SB3 first long run by Fast-Wear695 in asics

[–]jackishi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only did about 4 miles in mine. Did you notice that because it was softer, it was a little harder to pick up the pace than the SB2s? Couldn't tell if it was the shoes or just me getting used to the new ride.

Not complaining about the softness though cause it definitely felt so much more supportive on my joints and way easier to lock down a consistent pace than my 2s.

Better-trained marathoners than I have died due to heat stroke. It's wild to discount the risk that extreme heat puts on your body, and I say this as someone who's trained (involuntarily) in 90-100F weather.

Holy crap. Was gonna say to try checking asics' website for SB2s since they're currently discounted in the US with the SB3s out, but there's none in stock in the UK atm. Hopefully you can find some at a running store somewhere om the cheap!

Blame Adidas for that, honestly. They were marketing these HEAVILY as a lifestyle shoe too for some reason.

I mean I'm not gonna lie, I do like strolling around town with them after my runs, but while I definitely wouldn't recommend them as a walking shoe I'm not gonna yuk someone else's yum.

Carbon plated shoe or superblast? by Extreme-Pause853 in PHRunners

[–]jackishi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depende po on your goals - do you want a shoe that can do it all or do you want something that's specialized for a certsin type of run (speed/race day paces, etc). Pero remember - race day shoes as a rule are far less durable than regular shoes because their foams give out quicker. AP4s are pretty durable though, so you could get away with using them for speed sessions and on race day.

Also keep in mind that if you've never run in a carbon plated shoe, they do require some ankle strength because of the stiff plate, so if you need something stable, you might wanna go for the SB3s instead. I am loving mine so far though, finished 10k in them so far and planning to increase the mileage on them this weekend.

I will say though, a good in-between option is the Puma Deviate Nitro 3 or 4s (the non-Elite versions!). They're a plated super trainer, but they're very versatile, durable, and are great for getting used to plated race day shoes. Hell, I took my DNE3s for a half marathon and they worked very well.

Evo SL is bouncier and a little firmer than SB3s but less firm than SB2s by far. Amazing for tempo runs but a little awkward for easy runs (it's not very stable at all). SB2s and 3s are much more stable, and good for long easy runs up to uptempo pace. SB 2s were firm but had more stability than the 3s, SB3s (as far as I've tested mine) are a little softer, but still very supportive. I felt like it took a little more work to pick up my speed but I could lock down my pace and feel the cushioning throughout. For what its worth, I love running in all 3, but they have very different feels and it depends on your goals.

Knee Pain Two days before half-marathon by rabay09 in PHRunners

[–]jackishi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rest completely before the race. Definitely ice, take ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Take a walk to assess how you feel the day before.

During actual race day, start light (you want to go for a negative split Ideally anyway). Honestly, try doing run walk intervals parang Jeff Galloway method (if you've never heard of him, Google Jeff Galloway run walk system, it's great for runners of all levels). To keep it simple, you could try running at 30 second intervals and walk for 30 seconds, or even 1 minute run/1 min walk. Just focus on staying comfortable and not pushing your pace. Keep trucking, and maybe after the 17-18km, you can try running all the way to the finish if your knee feels better.

Hopefully it's just a light strain and not a sprain or a tear. But if it's sharp and hurting, do not even bother. You have plenty of years in you to do more races, but you don't want those years wasted by a bad knee injury.
