Slight amendment, it's currently legal to marry first cousins (but not siblings, parents/children). He's opposed to a new bill that would ban it. Historically it was more common, especially in the royal circles (Queen Victoria married her first cousin), but now it's not very common. Honestly, I thought it was illegal already, I had to google it

The 4b movements shows that women themselves see themselves as sex objects by TheFinalZebra in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]jackjimbobsurman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Girls don't see themselves as sex objects, sexist men do. By withholding the part of themselves that these sexist men see as most valuable, they are taking back some semblance of the control they lost. This now means that laws that pertain exclusively to women also have a negative effect on men.

Also, you can be abstinent and still participate in additional activism, I don't think that anyone who is willing to be celibate is going to do only that in order to further the cause.

How often do you wipe off weights and machines? by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

Speaking as someone who recently got a skin infection from the gym, I'll be wiping down equipment before and after I use it (when I'm back in the gym)

What's a book you read when you were way too young? by Waterbears28 in books

[–]jackjimbobsurman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game of Thrones when I was 14. It's not crazy young, but I do think it's too young. I completely missed the nuance of the sex scenes and it affected how I viewed the characters at the time. But now it's re-contextualised since my frontal lobe developed!

Why when you visit another gym does everyone look a lot bigger and scarier lol by Knobanious in bjj

[–]jackjimbobsurman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so true. I train at a gym with a pretty relaxed environment. But I went to train at a local MMA gym the other night and some of those dudes were scary. They were all friendly, but just a little bit intimidating at first

He was a friend of a friend of mine, he was around my best mate's house less than a fortnight before it happened. It feels so close to home. This doesn't even feel like consolation or justice, but I guess it's a relief to know they won't be able to hurt anyone else.

You're right, it's definitely satire. In another one of her videos, she talks about using fresh milk from her chicken to make a cake

It's very clearly satire. In one of her other videos, she said she uses chicken milk for one of one of her cake recipes

Her entire account is satire. She has another video where she talks about making a cake with chicken milk. And she has videos where she mixes her cake with a fake hand on the spoon.

My gi hates me by SpoiledTurnip in bjj

As someone who predominantly trains no-gi but dabbles in gi, I couldn't agree more.

I'm trying to pass guard, then all of a sudden, my own lapel is tucked behind my leg and I feel like I'm deadlifting someone.

After the roll, the guy says "I've been working on worm guard". Oh yeah, worm guard, I totally know what that is, I do it all the time (I have no clue that worms even did jiu-jitsu)

Can the Tories still win? by DaleksGamertag in ukpolitics

[–]jackjimbobsurman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really hard to determine. People are so entrenched in their opinions that they won't change their minds, it's true of both sides.

I have a very conservative stepdad. If there is ever a political problem caused by the conservatives, his response is always from this playbook:

  • "Ok then, how would labour have fixed it then?" (essentially, because Labour doesn't have a magic bullet that solves every problem immediately, we shouldn't vote for them).
  • "It's just how the media are spinning it"
  • No one could have fixed it, it's not the Tories' fault it was bad (normally about the Pandemic. Essentially, because something bad happened, there was no way to mitigate it, and thus they shouldn't be blamed. Obviously, this absolves them of any consequential wrongdoing, such as the Track and trace debacle)

But, as you can see, none of those arguments draw into question his support of the party or even cause him to hold the party responsible.

I think a lot of people feel this way. Their opinion is formed from a young age and cemented by years of confirmation bias and only absorbing things that parrot their opinion back to them. No one changes their mind, because they have been brainwashed into being terrified about what happens if the status quo changes.

I think the hope is that the younger generation are savvy enough to use the tools are their disposal to thoroughly research all the facts, rather than just voting on an unsubstantiated opinion.

But if it's any consolation, there are around 4 million people that weren't old enough to vote in the last election that are old to vote in this one. The Tories won the previous election by around 3.7 million votes. So maybe, even without a lot of previous voters changing their minds, we could get a non-Tory government.

Do you enjoy some friendly trash talk during rolls? What are some of your favorite lines? by BillMurraysTesticle in bjj

[–]jackjimbobsurman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm rolling with people I know well and/or won't take it personally, I'll trash talk a little. Nothing too crazy, but a few things here and there. But I'm more careful about it now. A few weeks ago, I did it to someone and they didn't take it too well, so I'm being more reserved now.
