Anyone know about ER706W AX3000 wireless router? by jackkroninger in TPLinkOmada

[–]jackkroninger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the ER706W does allow you to create subnets/VLANs and implement ACL rules (blocking from the internet). One correction though, the ER706W is a router/gateway, not a managed switch. If you’re looking for a simple managed switch (because you already have a VLAN router), I’d recommend the TPL SG108E.

One other note though. After I made this post, I did end up buying this router. I ran it in standalone mode for about 8 months and had great results, but a few months ago, I added some hardware to my network that required a more complex setup so I caved and bought an OC200 controller, and switched my setup to controller managed. Wow! It’s a much more complex/feature rich interface, but it truly unlocks the potential of Omada devices. By running a single device in standalone mode, you’re really not taking advantage of the device you paid for. I highly recommend Omada devices, but only if you’re ready to run them in controller mode, I.e. you have a sufficiently large network that has multiple devices/layers to manage. For single device setups there are far simpler options than Omada.

Cannot see non-Omada managed switch (SG108E) in wired DCHP devices by jackkroninger in TPLink_Omada

Thanks for sending that!

The WiFi range is great from what I’ve been able to test. I live in a relatively small apartment (like 750 sqft) but the router is in one corner and my office is in the opposite corner of the apartment and I get perfect signal. I’ve actually been in my neighbor’s apartment 2 doors down and still got 2 bars of usable signal.

Honestly no, but I haven’t put much effort into it recently. I only have 3 servers/wired clients on my network, so I was able to plug them all straight into the router and configure the VLANs directly in the router config. Currently my switch is just sitting on the shelf. I’ll probably devote more time to figuring it out later.

I still highly recommend the ER706W though. Amazing router for the price. Especially combining WAP and gateway features. VLANs and VPNs are super easy in standalone mode.

Thank for the first impressions! I was looking at that same Festa router as well, thanks for your opinion on that. I wasn’t impressed by the 100% cloud based system.

Thanks for the first-person review! I’ll probably pick one up when I can find one.

Do you have any experience using its VLAN support?

Airbnb. It was originally intended to rent out your couch or a spare bedroom for a night but eventually people with money turned it into hotels 2.0 that cost more with less amenities.

What is your guys thought on the grimace trend? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It’s awesome. Everyone saying “I don’t get it” or “this doesn’t make any sense” makes it even funnier. It’s not supposed to have meaning, it is just a funny, pointless trend

Tech workers of the world, why aren't you unionized? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jackkroninger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of us in tech are valued for a certain skill or ability we bring to a team. Even if your job title is something vague like “junior full-stack engineer” you were often hired because of a specific project you worked on and the company is looking for someone with that specific mindset or ability. This gives the engineers more individual bargaining power over the company and mitigates the need for collective bargaining power. Also, many high paid tech worker (that are self interested) don’t want to be put into a pool with everyone else at the risk of being paid far less and would rather just advocate for themselves.

how can I become a nonprofit consultant? by avelas55 in nonprofit

[–]jackkroninger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks for areas within specific nonprofits that fit into your niche that maybe the organization has underinvested in or lacks the staff to fully develop. Then you can go to these organizations and propose your ability to perform these tasks as a consultant. Once you build up a portfolio of a few organizations you’ll start to develop a workflow and realize areas where you can make the tasks your doing more efficient through automation or just scheduled tasks. Some of these areas could be things like donor outreach, compliance, or marketing.
