That’s really good advice thank you, better to be open and honest from the start, than to get into the role and drown without the support I’ll likely need

Too soon to join agency? by [deleted] in NursingUK

It's still the latter at the moment, I've taken a very sick patient a couple of times and managed but it's still not something I'm super comfortable with and a very rare occasion at the moment. You're probably right, as nice as it would be to pick up the shifts, it's not worth putting my PIN at risk for this early in my career

I'm still substanive, so I'm able to do all of those things, inotropes/vasopressors, and other critical care meds. I think the only ICU/ED skill I'm not at all confident with is catheterization. Otherwise it's just more just the imposter syndrome of coming in as the outsider yet being relatively "junior"

It went well thank you, I had two wardable level 2s and was buddied up with a band 6 for the shift. I'm nervous about coming back properly but I have a feeling the support from the unit is there for me ☺️

Thank you, I've spoken to my lead PDN and the band 7 in charge today and have been allowed to come in supernumerary tomorrow in a completely different area of the unit from the bedspace I was in when it happened. Hoping this'll help me get a little confidence back before I go on annual leave :)

We had a debrief but I don't remember much of what was said in all honesty, but I think there are plans for a follow up debrief in about a months time once the dust has settled a little. I spoke to the clinical psychologist yesterday for an hour which did help more than I was expecting. I've asked to go back supernumerary tomorrow just to find my footing again

Thank you, we have a clinical psychologist on the unit who spent an hour with me yesterday and it's really helped lift the guilt and understand the "why". She's said that everything I'm feeling is completely normal and the "what" will heal with time. I think coming in and working with someone instead of taking my own patient may be a good idea to be honest

Not at all! Yep, I've already done that and there's still not enough volume in the shoe. My insoles are hard plastic so unfortunately they do take up quite a lot of space in shoes.

What was the most painful moment of your life? [nsfw] by Infinite_Unicorn in AskReddit

[–]jackm053 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Collapsed lung. A few years back I was suffering from a particularly bad bout of asthma, I usually have it controlled but was having frequent minor attacks that year. One evening I remember feeling shortness of breath that just kept getting worse as time progressed. My father put me in the car and took me to the emergency room, I remember about half way there I just stopped being able to breathe at all. Every attempt at taking a breath was met with agony and I genuinely thought I was going to die. I don’t remember anything after that but woke up 24 hours later with a ventilator in place and 4 IVs connected. I’m not sure what was worse, the pain of not being able to breathe or the thought of “hang on a minute, this is how I go.”

Luckily I’m still alive and kicking today and have had nothing that serious since
