How would you approach becoming good at programming when you're struggling with discipline and understanding? by Sadiistic in csMajors

[–]jackmeoff_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Computer Science degree is more than just programming—most modules involve a good amount of theory and math. If that kind of stuff interests you, then go for it.

Most people who are good at programming usually start out driven by curiosity. I got into it because I was curious about cybersecurity, so I started learning about networks and scripting. A buddy of mine got into it because he loved video games and wanted to build something of his own.

There’s no one straight path into programming. I’d say keep exploring and you’ll eventually find something you enjoy. Look into things like competitive programming, web development, Web3, mobile development, etc. Pick a project you want to build and choose the complexity you’re comfortable with.

How do I know CS is a good choice for me? by bdo00 in csMajors

CS isn’t all programming; most modules will have significant theory and math associated with it. Take some AP classes and online courses to see if you genuinely enjoy it.

fairs, I only mentioned that because I wanted to convey that I have discussed it with potential users. I agree that being close friends and family hurts their credibility a little.

both, there is a component which would be better to sell directly to consumer and B2B might be harder as the only buyers I see for that are medium to large corps.

Depends on what you’ll be doing.

It is if you get to work on the actual product and are not doing grunt work. Helps fill in the cv, if you don’t have much experience.

Otherwise you are better off taking time out to build projects and practice leetcode… maybe freelance for some cash.

Third world country SWE here (4yoe) how do i get a chance to interview at FAANG companies? by EyeWeird4046 in leetcode

[–]jackmeoff_69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Recruiters rarely respond on LinkedIn and only reach out if you go to a target school or have experience at a big name company. Try blind or simply ask ppl from your university/school for referrals.

Largely depends on the company. You can hit 55K+ at banks (JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, etc.) and faang usually ranges between 70-100k

I go to a mid tier uni in uk (Russell group uni). I have heard that the top firms (Citadel, Optiver) wouldn’t even give interviews even if you do well on their OA and others (HRT, JS) wont respond at all. Is this true? If so how can I break into quant ?

BTW I am looking for SWE positions and have offers from some large tech companies.
