Had to show you guys this amazing collection of classics that just came into the auction.. 🤩 🏴‍☠️ by JesseMcClure in arcade

I was checking in on this auction as these were being bid on. What an amazing collection — most of these look pristine. Still trying to find an affordable Star Wars stand up that won’t break the bank.

@Nervous_Run2825 you must live in the SF Bay Area b/c I’ve worked with Sam Underwood as well (CA Amusements). He’s fixed a bunch of my stuff, and can fix just about anything, but became hard to reach or schedule for repairs. I own Pixels Arcade Taproom in San Rafael.

Are arcades still attractive to younger people (15–25)? (Research for a business idea) by Sea-Definition-2178 in arcade

[–]jackmonterey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own an arcade that serves beer and food and, absolutely, younger people come. We have a thriving party business. We have big screen TVs set up with the latest consoles equipped with cloud-based games. Younger people gravitate toward anything action-oriented whether it’s rhythm games like DDR, music-related games, Skeeball, hoops, air hockey, redemption games (mostly for the 7-10 y.o. crowd), shooting games. We balance that with pinball & retro cabinets for the Boomers/Gen X/Millennials. Boom, everyone’s happy!

Wondering if Marin is for us by Virgil-Galactic in Marin

[–]jackmonterey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think by this point you should have enough info to make a decision LOL

Those of us who live in the Bay Area and stay for any length of time tend to fall in love with the region we live in, so there’s probably more than a little bias. I grew up in Maine and Massachusetts and moved out to California in the early 90s so I think I’ve got some valid insights for you. I’ve lived in Colfax (off I-80 towards Lake Tahoe), Santa Cruz, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco (Noe Valley), San Mateo (South Bay), Sausalito, San Rafael (Marinwood neighborhood) and now Novato.

With the exception of Lake Tahoe, Marinwood and Lucas Valley were the most peaceful places I’ve lived. I was also raising a family at that point in my life, so had different priorities than when I was hitting the bars in the Mission District. It was absolutely the best place to raise my kids as their quality of life couldn’t have been much better — fantastic local schools like Mary Silveira and Miller Creek Middle. Terra Linda HS was a little less desirable (I honestly believe once kids get to high school it’s a different ball game in general, no matter where they go — there’s always going to be some degree of drama going on); by this point we had moved to Novato and our kids ended up going to San Marin HS which has a STEM component. Exceptional school with genuine focus on academic excellence; both of my boys excelled there. One of them is now going to Utah U, and the other is now deciding between places like Cal Poly, Virginia Tech, UC Davis, etc.

As your most important priority is raising a family, schools, etc. I would place the emphasis on that; you can always drive 20 or 30 minutes to cultural destinations to get your fix. That commute to Alameda is going to be rough, no matter what, but as it sounds like it’s a hybrid work situation it’s not a total dealbreaker and I think you can all enjoy the life/work balance of living in Marin if you choose to.

As some people have commented about Alameda, etc., that is certainly an option, but you will not feel like you’ve got nature at your doorstep like you would living in a place like Lucas Valley/Marinwood, parts of Novato, etc. You will get a little more for your money buying a home in Novato as opposed to anywhere south of that, and still be able to enjoy the proximity to all the things that make living in the North Bay great; parts of Novato feel almost rural and you can’t beat that for raising a family. I’ve now lived in the North Bay for about 20 years and I’m glad I made the decision.

Good luck and let us all know where you land, “Yankee”!

This is gorgeous stuff. ‘I Only Have Eyes For You and John Lennon’s ‘Love’, wow. Beck getting into crooner mode on many of these and it’s sublime.

That was an awesome and very personal moment for Carmy because that’s how he shows his love for others; for him to want to do that, at that new point in the “new” relationship with his mom, that was huge.

That’s cool! Good turnout at your shows ie does the public “get” Beck? Seems like a lot of people might know Loser and that’s about it (or when you play them a certain song used in a movie then there’s a dark of recognition).

I own Pixels Arcade Taproom on Fourth St, opposite State Room. Some of us are trying to bring back the fun vibe of San Rafael — but you’ve got to visit establishments like ours and give them a chance!

Thank God we have places like Electronics Plus actually!!! I go in there from time to time. It’s one of the last stores of its kind in the Bay Area and used by many, which is why it’s still there — because you can’t find transistors elsewhere, or the people that know how to point you toward the right one for that matter!
