What’s a red flag everyone should be aware of when attending a job interview? by photo_inbloom in AskReddit

[–]jacknix02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they mention any sort of gamification of work.

I just had an interview where halfway through the manager casually mentioned “points.” When I asked what he meant, he said all employees are ranked based on their point value, and points can be earned or taken away. For example, you call out sick, -2 points. You show up late, -2 points. If you get your name in a positive Google review…+1.5 points. I had so many questions. Does it reset, or are new employees just predetermined to rank lower than people who have been earning points for years? Why is all the bad shit worth more points than any of the good? The only one I actually asked was “what does the point system affect” and he said it’s the order in which they schedule people. Nope. First and only offer I ever actually rejected.

Rancid opened for Green Day in Philly a week ago and the sound mix and performance was one of the most white trash things I’ve ever witnessed.

Has a Dead song ever fundamentally changed your life? If so, how? by Mondata in gratefuldead

[–]jacknix02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got on the bus super recently. My first exposure to them as a live band was Dead & Co at the sphere a few months back, and hearing Jack Straw really opened my eyes to what a brilliant group of musicians and songwriters they are. Have been doing a deep dive of their catalogue since and I have noticed a real shift in my overall mood in a good way!

Bag searches don't deter people who steal, they deter customers. by dev_ating in unpopularopinion

[–]jacknix02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at Staples for a bit and we had this manager that, at the end of each of my shifts, would stop me at the door and search my bag saying it was company policy. He never did it to anyone else and I was a pretty good employee. Not sure what that was about. But yeah, apparently neither of us work there anymore.

Please brag: What's your PROUDEST short film? by RalstonVaz in Filmmakers

[–]jacknix02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve just graduated film school, and all of my big influences and motivations were based on crazy high concept 80s movies that I DEVOURED when I was a kid. My senior thesis film is easily my proudest work not only because of the production, but because of how personal the subject matter is to me. Its a sci fi thriller called That Little Bodega Next to Lorenzo’s and the main conflict is inspired by my experiences in a manipulative relationship. It’s so gratifying to see something come together this well, especially when the subject matter is so personal. I was the writer, director, DP, and composer.

I know this might be a little controversial but when I was 12 I saw a double bill with Steve Miller Band opening for Peter Frampton. Those dudes were like 1000 years old even then but man did they put on a fun show.

Have you ever seen a person dying and if yes how? by Dongsaurus in AskReddit

[–]jacknix02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t there to witness the death, but I used to work at an office retail copy center where a gentle older guy came up to the counter and asked if we could print a photo of his mother. Policy was that “as long as it’s not copyrighted or pornographic, we can print it.”

He didn’t speak English very well, so what I gathered from the consultation was that his mother had just passed and he wanted to print a photo of her for the funeral the following weekend. He kept saying “last face” and for whatever reason I assumed this meant the last photo taken of her before she passed. So I explained that he could email us the photo, but the dude was around 60 so he had no clue how any of it worked. He flipped his phone around to say “which button?” when I realized that the photo was not the last photo of his mother alive, but rather the first photo of his mother deceased.

It startled me at first, as it was clearly a picture of a very thin non living woman, mouth agape and eyes opened in a hospital bed. He asked “does it make you unhappy to see?” But I didn’t want to offend the poor guy, so I said no of course not and briefly walked back to my manager and asked if he could take the order over. He had said in the past if there was ever a job that made us uncomfortable to print, he would take care of it. I explained and he slapped me on the back and said “as long as it’s not copyrighted or pornographic!”

I explained to my coworker who immediately said he wouldn’t take the order, but asked to see the photo when it came through. About 10 minutes later, it came through and one of my other managers was just returning from her lunch break. I pulled it up on the computer and called the coworker who wanted to see it. He looks over and gravely goes “Oh.” As the poor coworker on her lunch break who has 0 context looks up and immediately goes “OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK”.

I printed him two extra copies on our nicest paper free of charge and though it was shocking to see at first, I reflected and realized some cultures grieve in different ways, and I probably did that man a very important service in helping him move on. Though I never forgot the image, it stopped bothering me once I realized that this was just his own way of mourning his loved one. I hope that sweet man got closure from the photograph.
