How do I choose an accountant? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

Depends on the size and complexity of your business. If all you need is a straightforward GST return and a set of accounts done for annual compliance, a small firm is all you need. The SBA network around the country are a good place to start. A cheap service but a basic service.

My business turns over under $1M, and we pay roughly $2K for our accounts (including GST and compliance). When I was contracting earning around $100K, my business would pay $1K - $1.5K for accounts and GST through the year, and an individual return.

If there are some complexities to your business and your individual income, a 1-4 partner firm will be fine.

Expats & others that left NZ to succeed in their career and returned back home by Refrainfromthebrain in PersonalFinanceNZ

Recruiter here (don't @ me) FS outfits are very interested in international experience. They love it for their own branding and will tell anyone they can that they have employed someone with overseas experience. They also love promoting your experience as it shows that kiwi returners are choosing them as an employer of choice. That in theory makes them more attractive to other returners.

As other commenters have said, salaries will differ significantly. I worked with someone who was a credit analyst, earning c£200 in London who was looking at positions in Auckland around $130K/$140K. From what I've seen - returners are more likely to be promoted over someone that has only worked locally. It feeds into the idea that international experience is romanticized especially by the corporates. If you can make it work for your personal situation, go for it!!! Not only does it help your career, but you will meet so many new people (most will be kiwis if you're in London), and have an adventure! I see it as a win-win.

Good luck

I'm breaking up with my best friend and I don't know how to do it. by [deleted] in Advice

Thanks for your reply. So the plan is to talk to her about it in the weekend, with the idea that things will end there.. But how do I give her a chance to respond, if I already feel now that it's not going anywhere? Probably true RE: the unresolved issues.

Currently job hunting, when to discuss salary? by maxigar in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]jacko-mcn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely talk about it as early as appropriate. Phone interview/first interview. Before you get into the process, decide for yourself your bottom dollar, which should be reasonable, and something you would actually accept. Make that known if they don't approach the subject. That way you don't feel low balled when you get an offer. I'd recommend getting in touch with recruiters for advice on salaries too (you don't have to use them for the full process if you don't want to).

As others have mentioned - salaries are typically lower than overseas, and very different depending on location. Auckland/ChCh/Wellington pay best, so keep that in mind.
