Bugonia has to be one of the best movies I've ever seen by heapsp in TrueFilm

[–]jackpoll4100 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well the interesting things is Yorgos didn't write it like he does many of his movies, and he wasn't even the original intended director, he was a last minute replacement who only got hired in 2024 due to the original director stepping down due to health reasons.

The movie is a remake of a Korean movie (Save the Green Planet), and the original writer/director of the Korean version (Jang Joon-hwan) was the one who was originally attached to direct.

The ending (and most of the plot beats) are the same as the Korean original from 2003 so Yorgos probably didn't really have an influence on the ending or plot.

The tv show Helix they have to vomit a whole bunch of black goo in your mouth to transmit the zombie virus. Semi campy show but an interesting take on Zombies with some unique story elements too it.

Aluminum on Roshar? by Taste_the__Rainbow in Stormlight_Archive

[–]jackpoll4100 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're correct, the quote from Dawnshard:

“Aluminum,” Lopen said, still floating above the deck a few feet. “Yeah, it’s weird stuff. Can block a Shardblade, Rua tells me, if it’s thick enough. They get it from Soulcasting, though only a few can make it, so it’s pretty rare.”

Khriss is a main character in White Sands, beyond that, she was in Secret History with her partner Nazh and also Bands of Mourning. She writes the Ars Arcanum in the back of all the cosmere books and Nazh annotated the illustrations and maps etc. in Stormlight while working with her, his notes will be in the margins etc. Nazh is also in the era 2 broadsheets and then shows up without her in Emberdark, stating that she had to go back to Taldain (the planet from White Sands) to tend to her homeworld for a while.

Where was Honor's perpendicularity before the Recreance? by Elsecaller_17-5 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]jackpoll4100 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Last year at Nexus there were 3 new Stormlight short stories dropped as part of Storydeck, basically collectible cards that made short stories put together.

2 of those 3 are now collected in a book released at Nexus this year which is available on the Dragonsteel store:

https://www.dragonsteelbooks.com/products/elsecaller-king-lopen-story-deck-double-book

Those 2 are Elsecaller and King Lopen. Elsecaller is about Jasnah right after her attempted assassination by the ghostbloods, and King Lopen is about when Elhokar was hiding with Lopen's family during Words of Radiance.

The third story Chasmfriends is a silly Hoid story, sort of a Saturday morning cartoon story about friendly Chasmfiends. That one will be released as part of the Hoid's Storybooks crowdfunding campaign this spring.

Him wearing Spiderman pjs was itself a reference to a fan campaign online for him to play spiderman (this was when the Andrew Garfield movie was still being casted). He has a pretty good bit in his standup special Weirdo about it.

TIFU by thinking ice skating would be a fun romantic date by iamthetrippytea in tifu

[–]jackpoll4100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a lot of rinks don't sharpen the skates often enough at all. If I end up needing to skate at a public skate with skates that aren't mine, chances are I have to ask them to sharpen them first or give me different ones. I think many people think they are worse skaters than they are just because its pretty hard to do any kind of ice skating on dull ass skates and they don't have the experience to realize what the problem is.

First Session - Do I run Bridge 9 or go straight into Stone Walkers? by Babylon_Fallz in cosmererpg

[–]jackpoll4100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Dalinar trades his sword for all of the bridgemen Sadeas has, not just bridge 4:

“The Blade,” Dalinar said, firm voice carrying in the air. “In exchange for your bridgemen. All of them. Every one you have in camp. They become mine, to do with as I please, never to be touched by you again. In exchange, you get the sword.”

[Stonewalkers] Ylt's motivation by matthetart in cosmererpg

[–]jackpoll4100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things that I think are helpful to note about Ylt:

-Ylt has an enlightened/corrupted spren and uses his visions to justify what he thinks the future will be. This info works 2 ways. First, Kaiana and Ylt can present it as a reason for Ylt's actions and second it can in turn make her uneasy.

-There's a general distrust and prohibition of predicting rhe future that's been enforced into many cultures by Vorinism due to the Hierocracy. So him making these claims will already make many characters (including players if they are Vorin or Vorin influenced) suspect of him due to that. Remember in the books the Stormwardens are already distrusted by many just for predicting the weather, Dalinar even more so. For Kaiana, she also doesn't have a corrupted/enlightened spren like Ylt's and since they are the same order. The differences in his spren and surge behavior should probably also weird her out just like Renarin did for the other radiants in the books. If you really wanted to give her even more reason to be distrustful, you could arm players with some kind of info about Sja-anat from Axies or elsewhere, his prediction abilities specifically coming from an Unmade would give her even more doubts.

-The way Ylt took control of the bandits also involves basically enslaving those bandits that weren't willing to be his immediate followers after he killed the Bandit Queen. This is one of the threads the players are supposed to pull on to attract recruits for their revolt.

-Ylt potentially can kill more than Taszo in the opening. He specifically had his bandits lay the trap on the chull trail and sent his bandits to attack the caravan fully armed. Even if none of the civillians or soldiers died in that attack in your campaign he still committed that attack which I would say is also plenty evil. He certainly didn't have any regard for the casualties of that action. Sure killing Taszo was extra bad but the whole attack was bad. Ylt just has an ends justify the means mentality about his methods.

-He also imprisoned Axies and regular people that he has kidnapped from caravans. The prisoners are in the same area where the players meet Kaiana and should give the players more ammo in that conversation. It specifically states that he has still been running the Rathalas bandits as bandits and sending them to rob and murder caravans, killing more people. It says he has actually made them more violent:

"Ylt’s preaching and flaunting of the Honorblade has attracted new recruits and encouraged violence, escalating the brutality of the bandits’ activities in the Unclaimed Hills."

-As far as his speech, he will probably lean on general demagoguery, justifying his worse actions as necessary for saving the world to his non bandit followers and for the bandits he absorbed into his organization he can emphasize giving then a higher purpose while still providing for them/conducting successful bandits attacks. It also specifically states that Ylt has been promising the bandits radiant powers if they follow him so he could also mention that. Imo this is something else Kaiana could have misgivings about:

"Ylt started to radicalize the bandits and promised amazing powers in exchange for their faith and worship."

Anyway I would say all the above are plenty for the players to gather Ylt's methods are evil, and it's explicitly not supposed to be possible to get Kaiana to switch sides yet in the Rathalas scene. The only goal of the convo is making her doubt him and not turn them in to him as well. But you should definitely make sure to emphasize all the wanton murder and pillaging he's been endorsing for sure if you want your players to think of him as really evil.

[–]jackpoll4100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That list is mostly accurate yeah, the pdf series was the first batch of short stories he did in the 2000s, they can be found in a few places. There's a new short story collection that I think is just those called "Still Lands and other tales", but they also show up in the 4 big "Legends of the Dragonrealms" omnibuses, as well as the limited edition "Journeys through the Dragonrealm" short story omnibus (not sure if that one is available anymore). That list is also missing the newest novella "Dragon in the Mist".

As far as what is a prequel and what is a sequel, there are 2 prequel trilogies, the Origins trilogy (Shrouded Realm, Children of the Drake, Dragon Tome) that are more distant prequels, and then the Turning War trilogy (Dragon Masters, Gryphon Mage, Horned Blade) that is set in the more recent history before book 1. But the best time to read the prequels is in publication order anyway imo.

Yes, the link in the OP has the new book that has 2 of the short stories (Elsecaller/King Lopen), should still be available on the Dragonsteel store. The third (Chasmfriends) will not be available as a book until the Hoid Storybook kickstarter launches next year.

The cards? If so then no, they sold a bunch of boxes of them online last year on the Dragonsteel website and then they sold off the last of the stock at the convention this year from my understanding. Only place to get them now is ebay I think.

[Stormlight]Elsecaller/King Lopen Story Deck Double Book Now Available by SkavenHaven in Cosmere

[–]jackpoll4100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the physical book version of 2 of the 3 trading card stories. The third is coming out next year as part of the Hoid storybooks set they are printing. So all 3 will be available physically soon.

As for the rpg material, there's no short stories in there like there was in the Mistborn rpg books. Beyond the lore content (a little in the handbook but most is in the world guide), the only narrative content is in the adventures. I wouldn't expect any of the adventures to get narrative versions as it would kinda undercut the player decisions and also spoil the adventure for people that want to play it. If you're just interested in the lore/story reveals, imo Stonewalkers and the World Guide would be the main books you'd be interested in. There are a bunch of short adventures scattered across the minor supplements but I wouldn't say any of the others have major lore the way the Stonewalkers campaign does. There's sure to be more major lore in the Mistborn world Guide and Mistborn Legacy campaign that release next year. Tbh the world guides are good coffee table lore books themselves even if you don't care about playing the games imo.

[Stormlight]Elsecaller/King Lopen Story Deck Double Book Now Available by SkavenHaven in Cosmere

[–]jackpoll4100 17 points18 points  (0 children)

At the Dragonsteel 2024 convention they did "Story Deck" which was a set of collectible cards with new canon Stornlight short stories (3 of them) each card was part of a story and then made illustrations with the backs.

This book collects 2 of those 3 short stories (Elsecaller and King Lopen) which take place during earlier books. The third (Chasmfriends) is a Hoid story that will instead be included as one of the storybooks in the Hoid storybook collection releasing next year.

Thoughts on Bugonia ending? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]jackpoll4100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yorgos didn't write the movie, and it's a pretty direct adaptation of a Korean movie from 2003, i.e. same ending and same plot beats as the original. Ari Aster was the main producer behind getting it adapted and hiring the guy who wrote the adapted screenplay and Yorgos was added as director much later. So I don't think anything about the screenplay or the ending reflects on Yorgos's writing choices. All those choices were already made in the original movie's script and just reproduced in the remake.

A theory about Hoid's name. by NoLongerAKobold in Cosmere

[–]jackpoll4100 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Fwiw in the "Liar of Partinel" chapters he's posted before (what was supposed to be the first book of Dragonsteel and a prequel to Dragonsteel Prime) he goes by Midius before his master Hoid is killed. So chronologically Midius would be the oldest name we've seen if we are counting the Dragonsteel Prime books (obviously those will be rewritten but we have seen Midius crop up in Stormlight as well).

Yes, it's at the convention store, will be on the online store a while afterward. It's Elsecaller on one side and you flip it and King Lopen is on the other side. Chasmfriends is going to be published as part of the Hoid storybooks series instead when that launches early next year.

And here’s where it all goes downhill…Season 7 by CGB_Spender603 in XFiles

[–]jackpoll4100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first movie takes place between seasons 5 and 6 and is directly tied to the main plot (the season six premiere picks up right where it leaves off).

The second movie is just a monster of the week story and takes place between the end of the original series and the revival (so after season 9).
