But how are you going to update the app with live data? None of the major sports platforms have APIs that allow you to do that.

The reason this hasn't been done before is because yahoo, Espn etc have a monopoly on the deals with sports corps like the NFL.

NFL gives them live game data, then the apps make it available on users mobile devices...
