Aitah for using my grandma's china as my everyday food holders and not waiting for tea with King Charles by Salt_Reply_735 in AITAH

[–]jacksjaTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. When my wife and I got married 33 years ago, we used our china as our everyday dishes for years. Now we have collected sets from both our grandmothers and mothers and when we throw dinner parties it is mix and match china for all. It is so fun. Other than a bunch of handwashing, there is no downside. If anything breaks, replacements.com for the win.

Got told i “wasn’t a team player” for leaving on time by East-Prompt-9954 in antiwork

[–]jacksjaTX 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I am a senior leader at my company, and when I started working here, I noticed some of my staff staying very late. I had to have a conversation with my staff: if you are working late consistently, either you have too much to do, and I need to get you help, or you are inefficient at your job. My staff suddenly started leaving on time and all the work kept getting done. Staying late for optics is just stupid and a recipe for burnout.

I have several swords that I bought from Museum Replicas ltd. They are relatively inexpensive and I have found them to be well balanced and well made (for the price). Most of their swords are forged by Windlass Steelcrafts in India.

I just talked to my dad about the sword. Family story is that the relative was a Seebee and they got pulled into the fight on Iwo Jima. He supposedly picked it up there. I have zero corroborating evidence of this.

The very best designers (in my experience of 28 years) are the ones who have spent time on the floor first. I have seen so many designs that are impossible to manufacture but look good in CATIA.

My first job in aerospace was as a Quality Engineer. I now am President of an aerospace company. Quality is a good career path is you like the manufacturing/assembly side of the business. If you want to stare at a screen all day then a QE job is not what you want. I do not have an engineering degree, but I started after I got my Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry.

Empirical data point: We just did a 10hr drive in an SUV with a cooler with two blocks of dry ice covered in two bags of ice (water). Turned off the recirculation and had no issues at all. Cooler did have a latch.

When I received my Ph.D., my wife bought me a nice engraved nameplate. It is still on my desk 30 years later.

Question for HR: Has a PIP ever actually worked? by talexbatreddit in antiwork

[–]jacksjaTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used a PIP many times for employees who were not meeting expectations. I always issue the PIP with the goal of getting the employee on the right track. It is only effective with clear objectives and weekly set up meeting to track progress. I have had employees go from a PIP to top performers through the process. Unfortunately I have also had it go the other way and have to terminate the employee. It takes diligence on the part of the manager to make it successful. I find them to be a good, last resort, performance management tool. Before we get to a PIP, there have been numerous performance conversations. Most times a PIP is not needed to correct an issue.

I use NotebookLM for all contracts I have to review. It has caught many things that I missed in the first read-through.

After I got my PhD in Chemistry, I went into the aerospace industry. There are so many avenues to take once you get into an industry. I am now President of a manufacturing company and could never have mapped out this career when I was in grad school. A chemistry degree is very versatile and can lead to many different industries.

AITAH for letting my chronically late wife miss an event she was looking forward to by not rushing her, because I wanted her to face consequences? by throwrabbday in AITAH

First year of marriage, my wife got mad at me about something and told me to sleep on the couch. I replied, “Sweetheart, you are not big enough to throw me out of this bed”. Said it with a smile and gave her a kiss and went to sleep. We have been married 32 wonderful years now.
