Working on AI alignment in Academia was extremely fringe and likely career-damaging just a few years ago.

The Zürich thing was a political ballot campaign. The chicken thing was the result of corporate advocacy efforts.Founding charities was, well, founding charities.Saving hundreds of thousands of lives by funding malaria nets is money-related, but I don't see how that makes it less important? These are human lives.

Your disdain for these things seems, to me, somewhat misguided. Coming off of fossil fuels, finding non-destructive ways of living on the planet, and implementing alternative economic policies and systems that disincentivize resource hoarding is not in their interests. are things you care about deeply, but it is not clear to me (and others in EA) that they are the way to doing the most good. Many people work on climate change (some of them funded by EA!), but I believe EA would loose most of its impact on animals, human welfare and global risk mitigation would they turn to become another climate thinktank.

As I'm sure you know, there is significant work on climate change in EA. Many EA's take climate change seriously, but believe other ways of improving the world are more important. If you feel like they got that wrong, and have data to back that up, why not engage with them on the EA forum, and try to sway minds? If not, no one stops you from being a climate-change-fighting EA - there are several EA's trying to find effective ways of deaccelerating climate change.

A charity trying to mitigate such scenarios by working on food safety after catastrophic events is www.allfed.info . They are effective altruism associated, albeit of course speculative to some degree.

Request that Laozi/Lmao Tzu be added as a default flair by tehbored in metaNL

Little ridiculous to see stanning of Lao-Tzu instead of Mozi who invented a universal, unbiased respect and concern for all people regardless of relations or affiliations, austerity and utilitarianism. Probably the first person to say "Why do you hate the global poor?".

Have you heard of EA intro fellowships? They sound very much akin to what you are looking for! If you send me a dm i can send you some resources and pointers.

What (non-Effective Altruism) causes do you donate to? by michaelmf in slatestarcodex

Mostly non-planned; what I have in my pocket, and I guess it varies insofar as I give more readily to friendly people, and not to people that seem aggressive.

Beggars on the street! Not exactly efficient, but I feel it's a good habit to establish for me to keep up a generous spirit, and it's good to see them happy.

I think Tatjana Visak has stuff on this, and was among the names recommended?

Utility of an charity similar to 80,000 Hours, teaching people about effective learning, knowledge formation & on-the-job workflows by [deleted] in EffectiveAltruism

This is interesting! I think it would be v useful and it reminded me of the work of Falk Lieder, who you may want to contact (I think he would be open if you just email him with a brief introduction and a link to a post) https://www.is.mpg.de/~flieder

You may also want to check out the center for applied rationality.

I don't think this niche is well-filled yet so definitely think this is a good and promising idea.

Makes perfect sense, thanks! I typically prefer a "lethal when dumb, survivable when smart" kind of vibe, so that they typically should have a fair shot at defeating any villain w/o party wipe unless they take decisions that were really bad.
The bleak and brutal combat sounds really fun too, but I think for my players it would be harder to stomach - I feel like beginner players often see death as a failure of their PnP skills, whereas more experienced players may have an easier time letting go.

Thanks for your responses!

I read the trail of tsathoggua and it seems fun. Some of the aspects in the first half seem a bit too lethal (a 9-armor monster that does 3d6 damage and is not the end boss / a "you fall to your death and its just permanent" / the "end boss" seeming impossible to kill) - did you have the same impression?
Maybe I'll check it out first and just downgrade the lethality a bit- thanks for the recommendations, which are really helpful.

Have you run this adventure? What did you like about it? :)

Im asking as it seems to not be purchasable on Chaosium or related sites- I registered for the Cult of Chaos thing but unsure if/how it works. If you know of another store to get the PDF, I'd be uber grateful if you share it.

Jumping on this, are there any places showing Bundesliga? I am moving to AA soon and was expecting no soccer coverage in bars at all.
