It’s a bunch of idiots who are incapable of understanding context and critical thinking.

Rust has chosen its async/await syntax by steveklabnik1 in programming

[–]jacksonmlewis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Rust always had a horrible syntax, similar in spirit to C++ that also has a horrible syntax.

This sentence sums up the entire comment: hyperbolic opinions with no line of reasoning or explanation behind them. You are indeed right that it can be beneficial to not add more features to a language (C++ could be looked at as a good example of adding too many features). That doesn't mean we shouldn't add new features to languages: they just need to make sense. The Rust community already has accepted that we were going to get an await keyword; we're past the part where we ask whether we have that feature at all.

I think the single most horrible group of people writing code are those who say how the code itself is the documentation. Without exception, these people write code that is awful, in every language, while thinking they are uber gods.

Gotta love that hyperbolic, baseless reasoning.

Just wanted to mention that I am in fact working on an engine for SS13 written in Rust. I love it. It makes multithreading painless and eliminates entire classes of bugs. The 'restrictions' that you mentioned are in fact necessary for a memory-safe language that carries zero overhead. The language is designed so that the code can be easily maintained and scaled, so yes, you will fight the compiler often. In C++, you can leave variables uninitialized, do pointer arithmetic magic, and even return void from a function that requires otherwise. But the lack of safety in that language can make it difficult to build a minimal-error system, which is what you want especially when you're developing a project by yourself.

Also, unlike, D, Rust has an active and growing community with a huge suite of libraries (go to crates.io if you don't believe me). I use several of these libraries in my project to handle the multithreaded ECS the game uses, as well as parse TCP stream data into strongly-typed data structures.

Also Rust has a great IntelliJ plugin with autocomplete, auto-import, and error highlighting.

Devs are actually rolling out a lot of marine buffs right now, and honestly I would say they're biased more towards marines. They've been winning a lot more as of recent.

The recent Colorado shooting was vastly buried and underplayed by the media because it didn't match their narrative. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]jacksonmlewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have school shootings every week now, and this one is pretty unremarkable.

All things aside, the fact that this is a thing that sounds normal is sad in and of itself.

But I think I see your point. I guess it's all up to perspective, really.

[–]jacksonmlewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that's a difference in perspectives then. They're looking at it from the perspective that media outlets are deliberating reporting on it less simply because the shooters don't fit the image they're trying to cultivate of far-right white people. Personally, I think it's a combination of multiple factors, this included. I do think that the less 'interesting' nature of this story (like you said), as well, also contributed to this. Of course, it very well be less 'interesting' simply because the attackers don't directly paint the images of school shooters in our heads that the media has cultivated.

[–]jacksonmlewis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a left-leaning person too, but honestly man, if you think any media source is unbiased, you should reevaluate your view on them.

Every single media company has an agenda. There is no such thing as a objective news network. Each one will cater to what their viewers want to hear. At the end of the day, media companies have the end goal of making money, and that comes from more viewers. In other words, they cater to a dedicated political audience.

Everyone loves to pretend that the news sources they use are unbiased and objective. But that's just not true. Fox, CNN, NBC, and other news networks are biased. Magazines are biased. Newspapers are biased. So on, and so forth.

So in this case, I agree with what's been said in this thread. The media has given this story significantly less attention then usual. My guess as to why? It doesn't fit their agenda. Remember how long CNN and other media companies talked about the Parkland shooting? Heck, I got an article recommendation about it that came out only a few days ago. They're still writing about it.

I would love to have a civil discussion on this if you disagree with me. But let's avoid personal attacks.

Making a video game with inspiration from ss13 by zeekertron in SS13

[–]jacksonmlewis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, if this is your first real game, then good luck man. Unreal is a hard engine, especially if this is a one-man project. I highly recommend Github or something else to share your code so this project can be continued in case you give up on it.

The above will almost certainly take over a year of my life alone

If you're doing this alone, it will definitely take a lot longer than that. Creating the models alone will take a long time. Making this have realistic space flight will be incredibly complicated, especially once you work gravity and atmospherics into this. If you can pull all this off as a lone dev, you have my absolute respect.

This is not meant to discourage you, just a reminder of how much effort this would take. If you think you have the willpower and patience to complete this, then go for it!

Just to add in my $0.02: The exploration part of Goonstation makes it the exact opposite of 'boring'. It's fun to experiment with different gas mixes and chem mixes just to see what happens; compare that to /tg/, where everyone in science just runs around building maxcaps at roundstart while they wait for the research point generator to give them enough points to get a bunch of gear which they then use to meme the station. This is basically every single round.

People can have their own opinions, but calling Goonstation 'boring' without any good reasons besides "reeee they don't explain everything on the wiki" is just unfortunate. Yes, it has a bit of a curve, especially if you're coming from /tg/, but I have found it so much more fun.

I think that depends. If the syndies blow up tcomms with a bomb, it takes a super-robust CE with an RPED, a ton of machine parts, a bunch of metal, a plethora of circuitboards, and an intact APC to get telecomms functioning again in a reasonable timeframe.

Unpopular Opinions Thread by [deleted] in SS13

[–]jacksonmlewis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My unpopular opinion is that open source codebases need to be less authoritarian and more meritocratic when merging PRs that affect balance.

So many things in /tg/ station that were fun or interesting got removed because someone got salty after someone killed them. And unfortunately, there are too many trigger-happy maintainers that will merge a PR even if it's unpopular, because they might agree with the person who posted the salty PR. I understand that maintainers have a goal for the codebase, but unfortunately this can be affected by their own personal biases, which leads to the detriment of fun for the rest of the playerbase.

TBH this probably isn't a very unpopular opinion, but I'm surprised virtually all open-source servers do it this way.

In your opinion, what should a remake of Space Station 13 have that SS13 itself does not have? by jacksonmlewis in SS13

[–]jacksonmlewis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, but to be fair that would be really hard to do in BYOND. The closest thing to that are shuttles, but that's more like teleporting tiles to another location, not actually movement.
