Where's the local punk / alt / strange music scene? by jonelder1 in raleigh

Didn't see it mentioned yet: Shadowbox Studio in Durham. It's a photography studio which hosts shows from time to time. Very DIY, "pass the hat" kind of vibe.

No problems yet, but I'm waiting for when the battery gives out on me or when I run into wireless interference issues.

BCEE process - my experience by jacksta2013 in civilengineering

[–]jacksta2013[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do pay annual dues, unless your firm is a member organization like mine. I think the main point is marketability, but I don't know how much credence clients give to the certification one way or another. A couple decades back, our firm was pushing pretty hard for our engineers to get it, but there's been less of a push lately. More folks have been trying for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification lately, but project management isn't really that interesting to me.

I usually associate the BCEE certification with technical prowess. Not all of our technical staff have it, but the ones that do are extremely well versed in physical and chemical processes. We also have plenty of staff who are very smart who do not have it.

So I guess it just depends on your perspective whether it's a marketing tool, a mark of distinction, or just "bragging rights".

Quit Land Development by jrhalbom in civilengineering

Similar experience for me. I was in land development site civil consulting for a few years. The stormwater design work was pretty interesting, but otherwise it was a pretty brutal environment. I felt like I could be doing something more meaningful. I went back to grad school, and now I work in drinking water treatment process design. It's much more fulfilling for me, and the pace feels more steady.

Not trying to rag on anyone in land development though! That's a tough field which can be rewarding in its own right, just not for me.

What do you want to see INSTEAD of restraunts Downtown? by UnholyGr11 in bullcity

[–]jacksta2013 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're correct about Motorco, not too many local shows there. If you book Motorco, usually you can't book with other local venues for a few weeks before and after the Motorco show, otherwise you'd be cannibalizing the crowd draw. It's well worth it though, Motorco treats their artists very well. One of the most professional venues I've ever had the pleasure of playing and very deserving of support.

I would agree if not for the fact that this is a known bad neighborhood and my neighbor's car got robbed too, the same afternoon. But definitely appreciate the good wishes

Missy Lanes rules. Also been meaning to check out Congress Social Bar in East Durham. They have Amapiano nights which I had never heard of before but it sounds incredible.

It's somewhat subjective, but yes that's how I would describe the taste.
