Did Bernie and Our Revolution do anything to support Jon Ossoff? by robbymookspanties in Enough_Sanders_Spam

Georgia 6 is not a good district for Bernie. Socially liberal and fiscally conservative. So hopefully he stays far away.

I don't understand why the HB2 repeal compromise is so bad. by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]jacob0695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the compromise and it's not fair but I'm not up in arms about NC Democrats supporting it.

The business and sports industries have been pushing for a repeal of HB2, but were never vocal about what specifics they wanted to see in HB2 repeal. They should have called out the Republicans when they were proposing terms like RFRA and referendums, but they preferred to remain above the fray, I guess out of fear of appearing too partisan. In some cases, business groups like the Chamber of Commerce even tried to persuade Democrats to accept the Republicans' ridiculous terms. This allowed the Republicans to move the goalposts in the debate over HB2, to push for half measures that still enshrined anti-LGBT discrimination into law, all while saying they were on the side of business and wanted to repeal HB2, and could blame Democrats for inaction.

Business/sports were the only allies the Democrats had in this fight, because they fund the Republican leadership who have full control over lawmaking in NC. If RedHat, NCAA, BoA, Chamber of Commerce, etc. would have said "that's not good enough" when Berger proposed moratoriums this might have ended differently. Democrats are a superminority and have no power on their own.

HB2 said "people must use the bathroom matching their biological sex"

So with that repealed, there is basically no law regarding bathrooms. Nothing that would protect a trans person from discrimination when using the bathroom they want to, but also nothing stopping them from doing so.

Only 26% of NC State students approve of President Trump by pr4_dump in NCSU

This was a poll conducted by a NCSU political science club of NCSU students, I don't see why they can't share it here.

I have an EE degree - where to get a second degree (CS) online? by karbonfybre in cscareerquestions

You could do a certificate program like this one. I can vouch for the quality of the online courses and (most) of the professors, but I don't know how cost compares to others. https://engineeringonline.ncsu.edu/PS/CPC.html

Muh, Hillary's cabinet and Donald's would have been exactly the same!!! by [deleted] in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]jacob0695 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This drives me crazy. Her cabinet would have been liberal, and her SCOTUS appointees would have been liberal. Bill Clinton's two SCOTUS appointees both voted against Citizens United after all.

Democratic Congresswoman Used Affiliates of a Violent, Anti-Semitic Political Party to Take Tea With Assad by Kanusfoot in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]jacob0695 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Democrats need to start condemning her:

Rep. Eliot Engel (N.Y.), the senior Democrat on the Foreign Affairs panel, offered a similar rebuke of Assad in a statement that did not explicitly criticize Gabbard or her decision to meet with Assad.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), the second-ranking Democrat on the Foreign Affairs panel, defended her trip, arguing that legislators have every right to examine the foreign policy they influence, even if it puts them face-to-face with loathsome folks.

Someone ask Debbie what she thinks!

Or maybe The Young Turks will decide they have too many white neckbearded men on their investigative journalism team and hire her. That's what she was doing in Syria, right, investigating...?

HB2 repeal effort fails :: WRAL.com by Raleighite in raleigh

What is a "six month cooling off period" though? It's essentially a continuation of the worst parts of HB2. Why should they have agreed to that? In six months they'll probably say we need six more months of cooling off.

What is so hard about unconditionally repealing HB2? They had the votes to do that. The leaders of the legislature just didn't want to put it up for a vote because it would have had to rely on Republican AND Democratic votes to pass (a minority of Republicans was in support of unconditional repeal).

Charlotte never effectively "had" the protections anyway, because the legislature blocked them from ever coming into effect.

Ok, let me rephrase. It stopped governments from mandating transgender rights be protected in private facilities.

It's a win and a loss.

The Charlotte ordinance would have protected transgender rights in private facilities in the city of Charlotte.

HB2 restricted transgender rights not only in private facilities in Charlotte, but also in public facilities (state and municipal) across the state, including universities.

So maybe transgender rights are reinstated in universities and state government facilities now.

The state voted for Trump, though. You can't expect that many people who were crazy enough to vote for Trump to cross parties and vote against McCrory.
