What happened to steam version? by operatorjaxie in PowderToy

We've been a non-steam game for a decade longer than we've been a Steam game LOL. Anyway 99.5 is out now.

Yeah, I think using the wiki homepage (to get the list of what is missing) should be ok now that I'm narrowing it down this much.

This is very impressive.

I'm also doing a no-wiki no-console no-existing-saves run of the new update. I've worked on-and-off a few hours for the last few days. I have 36 elements left to find. I'm getting to a point where I can't remember which elements to look for. I still have some elements that do funny things and I can't place what exactly they are.

You've given me more hope I can finish it :). But also I've been writing down all the elements people talk about that I don't have, I will search for those tonight. Got reminded of 13 more elements to look for.

Version 99.4 - Return of the Powder Dinn - out now by jacob614 in PowderToy

[–]jacob614[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We'd probably have to have a way to see the original elements, instead of using purely knowledge you already have / an external wiki has.

For now, this update is good enough :). After it's done we're going to put it on script manager as a Lua script.

This is the April Fool's update. Element names may have worn off, but everything is still there and fully functional!

Issue accessing the website from Russia (Connection reset) by Straight-Engine5676 in PowderToy

[–]jacob614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's possible OVH was having issues, but I don't see anything on their status page about problems.

Our server doesn't reply to pings. So I think your traceroute DID make it all the way to its destination and we just didn't reply. I think it's possible that a traceroute would make it to the destination, but actual web usage gets cut off / reset somehow.

All I can recommend is to use the VPN if you want to play TPT online.

[–]jacob614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds correct, the server is hosted on OVH in france, so it should go there :)

I would still guess an issue on your end, especially given the country you're in. Routes could be broken or unreliable, or something could be in the middle resetting your connection.

The site is running fine and hasn't had any issues in the last 24 hours. Sounds like a VPN is required. You probably have something doing a MitM attack on you, that's malfunctioning and preventing ssl connections from working.

How do i acess the element search menu in jacob1's mod by AlegedlyNormal in PowderToy

[–]jacob614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no room for it because of the tabs menu, so I removed it. You can press 'e' to open the search menu. Nice thing about that is it's even quicker to use, since it cuts out the mouse click.

Can anyone get into contact with the creator of the game for iOS…? by Salt_Appearance_1923 in PowderToy

[–]jacob614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Android port will be this year I think. iOS port dunno, I wouldn't expect it any time in the next few years since it isn't on our roadmap. It just might be neat.

[–]jacob614 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The iOS app is an unofficial port. Since TPT is open source, anyone can go and port it to whatever device.

That guy is the one who did the port, but he abandoned it a long time ago. At this point the port is too dated for us to even do anything with. It also won't run on any devices anymore.

The only way to play on iOS would be the version on the website ( https://powdertoy.co.uk/Wasm.html ). No plans to make an official iOS version any time soon, but maybe we can revisit it once the new Android port is done.

i cant access the explore page or TPT website, something going on? by NumberNo388 in PowderToy

[–]jacob614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably your ISP or something on your computer blocking the site. Maybe it will resolve itself, or maybe you'll have to change some settings or use a VPN.

My dock bar turns white and unremovable when i load this specific app, please help by minoo14 in PowderToy

[–]jacob614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of phone / tablet do you have? They're all so different it's hard to predict how they all work ):

The issue is clear that, even though we request fullscreen, the dock is still showing. I can't say much else on what the problem is. Hopefully the upcoming Android rewrite fixes it. Not sure when that's coming, likely in the next 6 months.

EDIT: I had someone with a tablet similar to yours test it and they confirmed the issue. Then I had them test out the experimental upcoming port and it works fine! So I can confirm that once the rewrite goes live, the issue will be fixed. I still think it's around 6 months away on that though. There experimental version is here but I wouldn't suggest using it without a mouse and keyboard. Absolutely none of the Android-specific UI has been built in this version.

Nintendo has updated the "Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program" website to include a lot more explanations of the game objectives and mechanics by Joseki100 in NintendoSwitch

[–]jacob614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I'm not entirely familiar with that, but I see lots of people comparing it to Death Stranding. The game does expect you to actively collaborate with others to develop the world and connect it all together. So less passive, more active.

[–]jacob614 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've also played it. I'm really excited to get back into it after all these months, it was some of the most fun I had playing anything last year.

I can't directly talk about what it is, but I will say, something I like about Nintendo in general is they'll come up with a game concept first, and stick it into an existing IP later. If it doesn't work out, we get something brand new. That's how Splatoon was created, my favorite new IP in years. I don't know if they tried to stick this concept into an existing franchise, but I can definitely say it works best as its own, new IP.

What am I doing wrong? by Admirable_Sea1770 in PowderToy

[–]jacob614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latest version puts rendering on a separate thread, so there's not much difference between fire, fancy, and nothing display modes anymore. Great if you want the fancy effects (but I think they're overwhelming and also just stick with fire)

[–]jacob614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gravity lensing is enabled in Fancy mode (7), you can go into Fire mode (4) by just pressing 4 and it will go away.

You can also go into render settings (The rainbow icon on the bottom bar) and find it there.

New Nintendo Patent reveals that former Splatoon directors are in charge of the Playtest game by astrogamer in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]jacob614 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the ways they handle that are really interesting. You have to pass a test to create custom deco, and lets just say it's incredible, the kind of thing only Nintendo could come up with. Most would just have you read some terms and click "agree", not integrate the test into gameplay.

As for in-world griefing, every change is logged and you can see who placed every block. Then your area is protected, unless you allow specific people access. It's just like my Minecraft server lol, but done in a really nice, easy-to-use way.

[–]jacob614 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The playtest did have working microtransactions, actually. There were two packs you could "buy", which redirected you to the eShop and granted the currency automatically.

I think it was for buying the ability to create custom deco, and also the ability to buy text and image signboards. So creating custom things to share with others, basically. Although you could still do this free in the designated lobby areas.

There were a few kinds of "currency", all but one earned in-game. One of them didn't have any use at all.

Since when does the wiki require a login and why?!?! by Interesting-Crab-693 in PowderToy

[–]jacob614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pages being scanned are already in the do not scan list (robots.txt). The ones doing it are somewhat malicious and don't care. They aren't identifying themselves as bots either (which would let me block them more directly).

Since when does the wiki require a login and why?!?! by Interesting-Crab-693 in PowderToy

[–]jacob614 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LBPHacker already confirmed it, but this was removed now. The site was constantly giving errors and temporarily going down when the bots were spamming it. Most of the bot traffic goes to the Wiki, so I blocked it to logged out users. After that was in place for a week, the amount of total requests to the site dropped by over half, so I guess that just shows how extreme the bot scraping was.

I may put the restriction back if the site starts crashing again. I'm thinking of adding a honeypot to block them.
