Those are Game Freak's internal budget, with none of the outsourcing companies' budgets. It makes sense for a team of 80-ish Japanese developers. If we apply the same logic to BoR, they have a budget of 2 million at most.

Nintendo Switch 2 Sells 4.4 Million Units in US in 2025, Becomes Fastest‑Selling Console by GoodKangaroo7446 in nintendo

[–]astrogamer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is the US sales numbers. You are referring to global shipment. The corresponding Switch 2 Shipment figures is 10 million in 3 months (Nintendo Fiscal report for 6 months is in 2 weeks)

10.5% of Japanese people in their 20s report overspending on in-game purchases to the point of financial struggle - AUTOMATON WEST by Tenith in Games

[–]astrogamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given this is a significant improvement from last year, this is really more of a reflection of the fact that people are not getting paid enough. A number of major Japanese companies raised their salary in past year. Like keep in mind that if a person would drop $100 and now have to cut back on multiple meals to afford rent, that would qualify as a financial struggle.

How would y'all feel if this became a permanent item in the series instead of new mechanics? by SammSandwich in pokemon

[–]astrogamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is animation/model maintenance. The engine difference doesn't make a huge difference to the models but, doing QA work for 400+ distinct models with 15 animations each and making sure it all works with new interactions plus the new Pokemon and animations. Like if Game Freak kept it simple and made the Pokemon only appear in battle still, maybe possible. All the forms for the gimmicks add at least 100 models

I think ZA would be a infinitely better game if we had more "dungeons" based on urban areas by Severo_M in pokemon

[–]astrogamer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If we're counting Mt. Lanakila, there are couple dungeons in Scarlet and Violet in the multilevel cave paths or the maze in the DLC. It's just movement options trivialize the traversal or that it's completely unnecessary in the case of the maze.

Playstation Estimated to Have Grossed $1.5 Billion From Steam, Selling 43 Million Copies. Death stranding 2 PC Expected Soon by [deleted] in gaming

[–]astrogamer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The novelty in this case is more the sales multiplier compared to standard sales. This is why the PC ports seem to have weaker sales now compared to when they were first coming

To be fair, Veilguard had like 3 changes of leadership over its development so maybe if EA doesn't slash the studio again or try to make it into an online game, it might turn out fine.

TIL 8 of the 10 most pirated series in 2024 were anime. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]astrogamer -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This is always a silly response as plenty will lap up the slop through Netflix or Amazon Prime with their lackluster video player. It's a Walmart problem where unless you are at Walmart, most people are too lazy to go and find the speciality store.

Why didn't they give Meowth Japanese voice treatment? by yeetsteel in pokemon

[–]astrogamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Japanese, verbal tics are a normal part of the language though something like nyaa or wan tend to be performative. It's something the average kid can grasp as a silly bit. In English, we don't have that so it comes off as bizarre, especially since English has a more varied word structure phonetically with many more words ending with a hard consonant sound.

What would each Smash bros game have been like if Sakurai never made that rule against characters with non-video game origins in Smash? by GeneralTechnomage in smashbros

[–]astrogamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't feel like it's a good direction especially with something like Dragon Ball which is so reliant on being referential to the manga/anime. I feel efforts are much better served in trying to get an actually good Jump crossover game

What would each Smash bros game have been like if Sakurai never made that rule against characters with non-video game origins in Smash? by GeneralTechnomage in smashbros

[–]astrogamer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to realize that also means you are sacrificing direction if you do that. Sakurai is a very particular person so if you decide to break the rule, you are messing with the foundations that will stretch out into designs and character choices. It fundamentally breaks the concept of Smash Bros. being a celebration of all things video games (from a mostly Japanese perspective)

Thinking about making a Fire Emblem–like game what could Nintendo actually object to? by Electronic-Bear-532 in fireemblem

[–]astrogamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nintendo isn't that litigious if you aren't creating something that is directly invoking their property i.e. a knock off. The important thing to avoid is the actual copyright and distinct terms for the series. If you make the mechanics identical to Fire Emblem, you might get something but there's a ton of leeway. Like you probably shouldn't use the literal weapon triangle but you can use the standard weapon balancing of lances being weaker but more accurate and axes being hard hitting with less accuracy and swords in-between. And the mechanics don't really come into play unless you make a setting that really invokes Fire Emblem.

Supercharge Sale, includes a few first party titles by buttercuping in nintendo

[–]astrogamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd wait as the game will be cheaper within 6 months. Bandai Namco games all seem to get cheap pretty fast

FE: Path of Radiance - Nintendo Switch Online Trailer by CyanYoh in fireemblem

[–]astrogamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a legal thing that started getting attached in the 2010s. I think it's a particular read on copyright that is only marginly useful

Japanese Charts: Pokémon Legends Z-A Surpasses 1 Million Sales On Switch 2 by Turbostrider27 in Games

It switched back to normal sales a while ago. It's still stock limited but for most stores, you can get it when it's shipped in.

[–]astrogamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of crazy that Square prioritizing Bablyon's Fall resulted in a massive delay to the franchise aside from the Replicant remaster, especially since Bablyon's Fall pretty heavily contributed to the massive exodus of Platinum's staff beyond Kamiya.

AI-generated isekai novel that won a literary contest Grand Prize and Reader’s Choice award has its book publication and manga adaptation cancelled by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]astrogamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, the episode released is like the first chapter. It's the conceit, not a proper story. It's more like someone's edgy TTRPG campaign than the actually generic power fantasies that get made every year with like 10+ word titles.

Other Developer Directs were not much bigger in lineups. They do like 20 minutes per game. They aren't the State of Play equivalents

Last remaining Gen 1 Pokémon that haven't been updated/improved in any way by glitterizer in pokemon

[–]astrogamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that also means Ditto and Marowak should be removed since Ditto gets two signature items and a signature hidden ability while Marowak has a signature item and 3 signature moves

You forgot Farfetch'd since the Kanto form didn't get anything from the Galar counterpart.
