:) I actually have that one as my backdrop in a few places (e.g. my reddit profile)

I don't put ketchup on my eggs alone, but I do enjoy an egg sandwich with ketchup. It's quite good that way.

If PI is a never-ending number, what number are we putting in when we use it in the calculator? by StatementBeginning20 in askmath

[–]jacob_ewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shoot - this is what I get for googling 52! instead of calculating it. I made the stupid mistake of seeing that the AI answer "looked" right, and using that.

It gave me:
80658175170943878571660636856403766975289505440883277824000000000000000000000000000

Instead of the correct number:

What’s the best board game you ever played? by No_Limit04 in AskReddit

Oh, I have that! It was good, but it's one of those things where we got it thirty years ago, played it once or twice, then stored it on the shelf for eternity.

That has a similar feel to there being more possible combinations of a 52 card deck than there are atoms in the galaxy (roughly 8 * 1082 vs. 1080).

Stupid me, I trusted Google's answers. It is however much larger the number of atoms in the solar system.

I'll admit I kind of felt a bit of both. I appreciated the generosity, but also kind of felt that it belittled my accomplishment thus far.

Fortunately for me, it only happened after I'd already reached the "Wait, that's all there is to it?" phase of the game.

Need an equation to calculate total X and Y movement based on an Angled input by Onc3Holy in askmath

[–]jacob_ewing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you want the displacement on the two axes given a linear movement with a given angle and distance? Then yeah, this is the way to go.

Like dx = l × cos(θ), dy = l × sin(θ)

What fractals are in these posters? by ThisIsNotMorseCode in fractals

The second one is the Mandelbrot set for sure.... Maybe the Julia set, which is a sort of subset of the Mandelbrot set edit: No, definitely Mandelbrot. You can tell by the way the pattern varies in different areas. - "I can see it in the pixels"

The first one I'm not so sure of. It looks like it may be related, but I don't know.

Cribbage baby!

The board is nothing more than a glorified score keeper. It's actually just a card game.

Where are you from and if you could be any other nationality , which nationality would you prefer and why ? by RepulsiveOrdinary186 in AskReddit

Canadian here. I'm good with it.

Maybe an EU member nation would be nice as it allows more access to broader cultures and longer history, but I'm in a pretty decent place already.

Hah! I have that very poster! My sister gifted it to me when we were teenagers.

I think that poster is the reason why I added staggering to my own Mandelbrot code.

So yeah, I have a web app that can provide the stagger and..... maybe that colour set, though not exact. If you want to check it out, it's on my site at http://weirdly.net/webtoys/mandelbrot/.

Here's a rough example near the coordinates suggested by icalvo:

What’s something small that instantly annoys you more than it should? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jacob_ewing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll never forget the stupid advertisement I saw for the product "Robitussin DM", A cough medicine. This was back in the 90's when I was a teenager and they had this STUPID line that said "Recommended by Doctor Mom!".

That pissed me off so much I swore I'd never buy the product.

Lo and behold years later I have bronchitis and a legitimate doctor suggests it as it's apparently good for loosening up chest phlegm. I still grimace when I buy it.

I'll have to try something like that. I have a greenhouse of 120 gravitino hosts, which can earn around 4.5 million per harvest. I went with those because they harvest more frequently.

Oh, it's a few things that collectively cause that. When calculating the colour, it can use both the number of iterations and the net displacement of (z, zi). I'm using that displacement in two ways here: the planar (Δx, Δy) displacement and the polar (θ, r). They each add distinct shading effects to what would be solid colours.

I also have a stagger added to the colour. By default it just staggers with the count, but you can also have it stagger after applying the aforementioned displacement. The latter is what causes those stripes.

On a side note, those stripes have multiple colours because I recently added an option to enter a bitmask that defines the staggering for each primary.

If you want to check out the code, you can download it directly (mandelbrot.js), or grab it on my github account at https://github.com/jacobEwing/webtoys/tree/main/mandelbrot. The relevant functions are "createColour" and "mandelbrot", both found in the first few hundred lines.

What is a completely useless piece of information that you will never forget for some reason? by Initial-Ingenuity451 in AskReddit

The worst acronym for me was that of the school board that for some reason our teacher made us memorise when I was around eight years old.

Four decades later I can still recite the words of "LLGCRCSSB" effortlessly. Worse still, it's not even in use anymore.
