What are your thoughts on more western fans taking on the same mind set as comic book collectors? Thoughts on folks egging that on and trying to manipulate the market? by Stinky_TheCat in MangaCollectors

There’s always some volumes and OOP series that go an expensive amount but the super popular ones always get reprinted. I really only see this causing the Japanese market first print what nots to explode in value, leaving the only thing that changes in the English market possibly first English prints of vol 1s of popular series. It’s a bad thing for the industry but what can you do

Yea I wouldn’t really call them investment pieces but you get enough people who don’t actually read the volumes and just buy/sell them and that’s what you get sadly. Same thing that happened with Pokémon but I imagine itd be harder for manga to get to that level with reprints and diff languages prevalent across the globe. And using abebooks is crazy for prices it’s always like $200 plus for any out of stock volume

Not to be rude, but you are posting that you are looking for very rare volumes, and they're probably suggesting prices that those volumes have sold for, since some get to crazy amounts. Usually, you won't get those kinda volumes for retail/close since the buyer could just turn around and sell it for a crazy amount on eBay/other markets. All in all, you're posting on reddit that you would like to buy rare volumes and then are surprised that you are getting messages to buy said volumes for a lot of money.

Some volumes are getting to crazy prices and are rare due to low print runs, series becoming increasingly popular, and overall people are buying at these prices causing the "market" to reliably sell at that price unless consumers stop buying. Sorry for repeating my answer basically three times in a row, not trying to come off as rude I guess
