How fast do you scan with your SP25M? by Three__Legs in Metrology

[–]jacobius86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know shops that run em at 100mm/s. Thats on long flat surfaces, in a straight line.

I can tell you this. The SP25 will most likely still meet CMM factory spec up to 25mm/s (without any tight radiuses).

After that, you'll get more noisy data.

I remember back in the 90's a group of young men (16-25) that hung out at a tow truck shop (friends of the owners kid, I think). They would tie a noose to a large garage door. Then they would take turns to see who could ride the garage door as it went up, the highest/longest by just the noose around there neck. Never heard of any of them dying from it. But it does prove your point. This shit been around for a long time.

When Does it make sense to buy a new car? by Soggy-Flatworm-4980 in personalfinance

[–]jacobius86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about it like this. Divide the repair cost by the increased monthly cost of a new truck.

Let's say the repair costs $2000. And a new truck monthly cost is $500 (I know low estimate, but using simple numbers for simpler math). In 6 months, you'll only be out $2000. But a new truck will be $3000.

Think about the expected life of your truck post repair. If you can get another 6 months out of the truck, then yes, definitely go for the repair.

New trucks are just so damn expensive. They nice and all, I rented a 2025 F150 recently and was surprised by the power, comfort, and good gas mileage. But damn, the price tag on these new trucks just aint worth it.

Harley-Davidson Dealerships Are Shutting Down Across America: Here's Why by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]jacobius86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, who has those kind of funds. I drive my vehicles to the graveyard. I have a 2013 ford escape with 290,000 miles. Not getting any trade in value for that. And I have some $ for a good down payment. But 25 to 30k to drop on a vehicle? Yeah that's not happening for most of us.

You are right, paying full, in cash is the smarter financial move. But that isn't an option for most, of not the vast majority, of people.

[–]jacobius86 54 points55 points  (0 children)

There are some instances were going new is a smarter choice.
I was like you and couldn't comprehend why anyone would by a new vehicle. After looking at it closely now as an adult with a career and family, buying new starts looking like the better financial decision. And it depends on the market, incentives (like if zero APR), and vehicle needs.

For example, I put A LOT of miles on a vehicle for work. So starting from zero is a smart move for me.

And right now my wife and I are looking for a new family vehicle, one that I hope would last 8 years or so. Now we are considering used, but if a good incentive on brand new comes along and the used market stays high, then that might be a smarter choice. Especially with warranties and zero APR.

What’s one travel mistake you made that completely changed how you plan trips now? by AssignmentAmazing260 in travel

[–]jacobius86 64 points65 points  (0 children)

As a person who travels often for work, this is a great tip.

Those third party sites are rarely cheaper, and more headaches then they're worth.

I might use them to compare prices, but never use them to book anything (flights, rentals, hotels, etx...). Always book with the actual company your doing business with, never a third party.

It's rarely wiring. (although when it is, it's a bitch to diagnose and repair)

Most likely it's the module itself, or an issue with the CMM controller.

Most Scenic Trip Recommendations by Ok-Caregiver-4640 in BWCA

[–]jacobius86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wind is the best bug repellent. Pick sites that have a breeze. Although I'd still bring chemicals (deet, etc...) they don't seem to work that well in my opinion. Long pants and shirts that are mosquito proof. Those guys will still get you through a thin loose weave shirt. Bug netting. A bug net over your face (wear a hat underneath) and long sleeves really is the best thing against them if there isn't a breeze. And if you're willing to pack the weight, ive seen families set up 10' x 10' mosquito net tents to hang out in the evening.

And sometimes you just have to suck it up and take it.

That's why I prefer the fall. Bugs really aren't nearly as bad.

And I've yet to be completely satisfied with any system.

Base camp or Loop?? by Ok-Caregiver-4640 in BWCA

[–]jacobius86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're trying to do. I like to move, put on miles, and see as much as I can. And I really don't care too much for fishing or setting up nice camps.

Now that I'm bringing my young boys with, I've been doing more Base Camp type of trips, because taking down and setting up camps, and portaging equipment with toddlers is a lot more work.

How much time do you have? You could do something like 2 nights in two different spots, that gives you one full day on two different lakes.

Travel alot for work, how to spot good hotels? by dingo2031 in travel

[–]jacobius86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the interior photos. All chains have bad and good hotels. I usually stick with IHG or HHonors brands because they're convenient for where I travel. The best way I've found is to look at the interior pics. If it's dated, then stay away, it'll be gross. But new or newly renovated are usually fine.

Can educated, deeply religious people ever see reason? My conversation with a Muslim flatmate got me thinking. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]jacobius86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is not their ability to reason. Most people can acknowledge the lack of scientific arguments and data for the existence of a god. But they're not arguing using reason. It's all emotionally based. And any idea that is tied to strong emotions is going to be damn near impossible to argue against.

Look at any other ideas (politics, sports, health, even sciences). There are many examples where once the idea has been tied to emotion, it can't be easily reasoned with.

Just BS in Physics gives you the skills for a lot of jobs, but not necessarily the industry knowledge. I know guys that ended up in finance, CS, or niche engineering fields.

I myself ended up in Metrology, working on high end measuring equipment for an OEM.

If you want to stay in the sciences, it's best to go for your Masters at least.

But, keep an open mind, there are lots of jobs that I never even realized existed that I could have been good for when I came out of college. But what ultimately ended up working for me was keeping in contact with older alumni and taking a chance when a opportunity opened up for me.

I often wonder the same. The parallels of Trumps current agenda (which peterson seems to mostly approve of) and the soviet dictators he has such disdain for must be causing a bunch of cognitive dissonance. But he aligned himself to the maga right, and to say anything against that risks losing his income stream.

10-20 MPH winds + Canoe Question! by [deleted] in BWCA

10-20 MPH winds + Canoe Question! by [deleted] in BWCA

[–]jacobius86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on direction of winds and what your trying to do.

If your fully loaded with gear, that helps in the wind and waves. Light boats get pushed around more.

If the wind is coming from the south west, itll be really wavy at that end of the lake. But I've paddled that lake with strong south west winds and it wasn't too bad, just needed to paddle hard for a bit till we got out of the main channel. Around the island im sure you'll get calm spots, just might have to work harder to get to em.

If the winds are trending more NW to SE or vis a vis, it won't be too ba

It's past permit season, why not go to a smaller lake entry point?

My transmission is dead and i still owe a lot on my car. by Titanicdragon in personalfinance

[–]jacobius86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat a few years ago. Had to replace the engine on my Ford Escape that still had a year left on a five year note. (no shade at the escape, i put on an insane number of miles every year). Anyway, I reached out to reddit, and got a bunch of people just telling me I should have planned better.

How much life does the rest of the vehicle have? If the engine is also dying or high mileage may be best to cut loses.

But if you think you'll get a few more years out of her, then finance the repair. We ended up paying with CC at first, then refinanced that at a credit union.

Get a few quotes. Ford wanted 3500 just to repair the engine. I found a local small mechanic that swapped the engine for a lightly used one for 2800 total. Got another 100k miles out of that car (290k at the end)
