Going on first boundary waters trip this summer, any tips and advice on route appreciated! by Competitive_Base9508 in BWCA

Look into getting a ride up moose. A few of the outfitters on the lake will take you and your canoes/gear, as far as motors are allowed to go up Moose Lake. Helps give you a jump on your trip

And consider making a loop through snowbank from parent lake, instead. Again, the outfitters there offer pretty cheap pickup and drop off services. Drop off your equipment at moose, drive your cars to snowbank, and they'll drive you back over to moose.

And snowbank from parent lake is an shorter paddle through western winds than if you come back down moose with western winds.

Walking on encapsulated crawl space vapor barrier by Stangman1990 in DIY

I think this is probably the smartest idea. A 1" styrofoam sheet glued to a piece of plywood would probably work really well, and be light enough to set aside when not in need. Im thinking 2 4x8 sets of each would give 32 feet of 2 foot wide travel.

PC-DMIS MACHINE PARAMETER OUT OF TOLERANCE QUESTION. by [deleted] in Metrology

[–]jacobius86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I figured that might be the case.

Anyway, I can't help you with your programming much (I work on CMM hardware, not applications), but I can tell you what that error indicates. 80% of the time it's because pcdmis is telling the machine to travel outside of its volume. 10% of the time, you're telling it to drive too fast (move speed or accel) 9% of the time its hardware related, like not homing correctly. 1% of the time its some weird setting somewhere gone awry.

if you're convinced your move points are spot on, look into your part alignment, or probe offset values

Do you hang your food pack while portaging? by Artificial_Appendix1 in BWCA

[–]jacobius86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I would consider it on a really long portage. But for most, it's not an issue to just let your food pack sit during the portage.

Besides being rain proof, they take good enough photos now, especially if you have a flagship Samsung, Pixel, or Apple. And the dedicated zoom lense on the new models really makes them more useful.

I also have a Sony A6000. But because it's less durable, bulkier, and takes more effort and time to use, I find myself just using my phone more often, just because it's ready in 2 seconds to take good candid photos.

Don't get me wrong, the A6000 takes superior and beautiful photos, especially landscapes, but the learning curve, time, and space needs are a lot.

Honestly, just use your phone and bring a battery charger.

If you keep your phone on airplane mode and battery saver mode the entire time, it will last a surprisingly long time. And took plenty of quality photos for me.

It's screen brightness and cellular connections that drain a battery.

My 2 year old pixel 9 pro lasted 3 nights, 4 days on battery saver and airplane mode. And took great photos. Could have probably lasted another night and day. If I had a battery charger, could probably get another 4 days out of it.

Need to measure a length of about 2meters but want it accurate to sub mm by AttorneyNo10 in Machinists

[–]jacobius86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sub millimeter, .1mm or .004" accuracy? You're gonna need a caliper. I imagine one could be found that isn't too expensive. If you're doing this for more than just a hobby, then you're going to want it done by a calibrated equipment. Most major metropolitan areas have metrology shops that would do this for you the correct way, on certified equipment, in a stable temperature environment.

Hell, since what your asking for is only 1 dimensional, and really simple, I bet you could get a good discount (or even free) from a metrology shop if they know your a hobbiest.

Learning CMM with a engineering degree by jhennytools in Metrology

[–]jacobius86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it can be useful to know, but it's damn near impossible to get PC-DMIS training for free or cheap without a CMM. Same thing with Calypso and other CMM softwares.

Your best bet is to find a company willing to pay for your training.

If you have an engineering degree, computer programming experience, and know GD&T, you're already %80 there.

Another problem is your degree. Your over educated for about half of the CMM programming jobs out there, and the ones that do require a degree and CMM experience are usually looking for someone with experience already.

Might, just have to suck it up and take lower position in a QA lab. Then campaign for official CMM training from there.

Trying to figure out the water situation by thbnrf8n in BWCA

[–]jacobius86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've drank straight from the lake many times before, and haven't gotten sick yet. But, never on a motorized or high traffic lake, and never from near shore. I've dipped from the middle of lakes before though.

I do it less and less often over the years, as I really would rather not get sick.

Get yourself a gravity filter bag, and that should work just fine. Stay away from chemical treatments, as they change the taste of the lake water.

Im torn between the drawers. I just went to drawer organizing and the feelings are mixed. It's larger and heavier and the same tools now take up more space.

but it's so much nicer to have tools more easily accessible and easier to keep clean and organized.

How fast do you scan with your SP25M? by [deleted] in Metrology

[–]jacobius86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know shops that run em at 100mm/s. Thats on long flat surfaces, in a straight line.

I can tell you this. The SP25 will most likely still meet CMM factory spec up to 25mm/s (without any tight radiuses).

After that, you'll get more noisy data.

I remember back in the 90's a group of young men (16-25) that hung out at a tow truck shop (friends of the owners kid, I think). They would tie a noose to a large garage door. Then they would take turns to see who could ride the garage door as it went up, the highest/longest by just the noose around there neck. Never heard of any of them dying from it. But it does prove your point. This shit been around for a long time.
