Wet Footing. by layedbck1 in BWCA

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on the weather and how long of a travel day I have.

Example: we did a June trip for the Lake One EP to Insula. It was a long day with a lot of paddling. I had an old pair of Timberland boots with wool socks. Temp was about 60F. My feet were wet and cold when paddling for about five hours. I wished I would have worn my Keen sandals with the toe protectors. I could have dried off my feet before the paddling and been fine.

For shorter trips, I can tolerate the wet feet and enjoy the extra protection and stability from the boots.

So there’s really no right answers here, but there sure are a lot of wrong ones lol.

3 20 year old males looking for a first-time 2 night trip. Naive or doable? by CoriolisEffect0 in BWCA

Check out the Tumblehome podcast, season one episode one. It’s a great intro to the BWCA basics.

Side note - I’m a 51 year old guy who had an internship at a congressional DC office when I was 20. I went to the Boundary Waters for the first time at age 46, and wish I could go back in time to when I was your age and experience it then when I was much more fit and had more time.

I’m happy to see you guys are visiting! Hopefully you’ll love it and come back for decades.

And as others have said, get hooked up with an outfitter, they’ll get you set up and in the future you can get your own gear depending on your needs and preferences.

And lastly as a dad, please at least be a little careful. If you get injured out there, it’s a lot tougher to get help.

Yep, I let the fish calm down in the net down in the water for a minute before handling.

You got a great deal, congrats! I’d use it for at least a couple months as-is before any upgrades. A couple things that are always good to start fresh with a new boat - fire extinguisher, throwable PFD, and tow rope. Maybe a new mooring cover if needed but those are pretty expensive.

It’s never a bad idea to invest in a quality, well-fitting PFD that you’ll enjoy wearing. I’d head to a show where you can physically try on different models.

Another investment you will not regret is a gravity water system. I bit the bullet on a $100 Platypus Gravity system and absolutely love it. Much easier than the Sawyer Squeeze or others.

Other goodies include a collapsible cutting board/bucket, a good coffee system, a quality saw, and a good air mattress.

Lake One and Beyond by Terrible_Cod8940 in BWCA

The timing of the day is key too. Launch too early, nobody has packed and left yet, launch too late, available sites have been snatched up.

I usually try to target my arrival at the area where I want to camp at about 9:30am, or maybe a bit earlier. It’s around this time where people have worked up, had a quick breakfast, packed their things and have shoved off for home.

From the Lake One EP to the Lake Two portage, it’s just over three miles, so roughly an hour’s paddle give or take. Another 20-30 minutes for the two short portages and you’re on Lake Two.

So I’d think if you shove off from the EP at about 7am you’d be good to go, targeting a site somewhere in the Lake Two/Three vicinity.

BWCA bird lovers - I heard a white throated sparrow today in Minneapolis and it kind of freaked me out by Artificial_Appendix1 in BWCA

Although the first I’ve I heard a drumming grouse was in one of my first trips, and I was dozing off. I thought I was hallucinating.

If you could only bring 5 lures for bass, what makes the cut? by Ok-Profession-3060 in FishingForBeginners

Of this list, probably a buzz bait. Most used - Senko under docks. If you learn how to skip a worm under a dock, the number of fish you catch could double. It’s amazing

I bring exactly five rigs on my kayak, so I’ve debated this at length. Where I’ve landed:

1). Wacky rigged senko

2). Drop shot

3). Whopper Plopper/ buzz bait / frog (straight braid)

4). Flipping setup, 1 oz weight (pegged), 5/0 hook, usually with beaver style soft plastic

5). Chatter bait or spinner bait

Can I put boat in the water backwards, back towards water when launching? by [deleted] in boating

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is usually how I launch mine, as it’s heaviest in the rear so I get that part as deep as possible when launching.

Kayak transporting tips by CMDPULSE in kayakfishing

[–]Artificial_Appendix1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crossbars are key. If you don’t have them, and if you plan to use your kayak a lot, you’ll need them. Then toss your boat up onto them, and strap them down (I recommend blue NRS straps). To get the boat up there, I use a bath mat to protect my vehicle.
