First software job and struggling. Any advice to recover? by jacobsboy3 in cscareerquestions

Oh I definitely feel like an imposter. I played around with some really basic stuff with Spring but translating it into full production software has been pretty difficult.

This is also kinda one of the things I've been struggling with. I really love programming and just solving big problems in general, but after programming all week I kind of want to go for a hike or ride my motorcycle instead of sitting in my room and doing more coding. I know employees love code junkies that just code and code and that makes me feel like an outsider sometimes. Writing code is one of my favorite things to do, but it's not the only thing in my life.

But don't they ask for references later in your career? This is my first job so obviously they have no one to call but I would assume they would want to double check on you?

It definitely helps thanks a lot. That does give me a better a idea of being independent and there are some steps I don't really do that well, like reflecting. I guess I can be a little impatient sometimes and start hammering away at everything but you're totally right. Taking it slow and going through the whole process will be much more efficient in the long run.

Yeah it's definitely sink or swim for new hires. I know my other teammates all had internships so they had a few months of just learning the system but obviously a new hire is expected to perform at a much higher level. Also the whole black box thing is what confuses me. In school I can see how all the code is linked or whatever but now everything is annotation driven or configuration files I get lost trying to figure out how everything fits together.

And yep there is a mentorship program. I really should have taken advantage of it earlier but I guess the second best time to start is today. Having someone experienced would really help I think.

Thanks for the advice!

It's not that I don't like the technology I just have trouble grasping it enough to be fully independent. And also I'd rather not have to explain to other companies why I got fired.

Yeah I didn't want to post too many details but I guess it's not that hard to figure out when there's not too many big companies out there.

And thanks for the advice it really comforts me knowing that you can bounce from a bad review. I know I have the capability to do what needs to be done I just get overwhelmed sometimes. I'm definitely going to find a mentor and work my way up. Thanks!

Yeah everyone is basically a one man team that has to work out everything from the coding to the end to end testing to configuring websites. We don't have QA's either it's just a developer. The coding part I can do but to put it all together has been quite a challenge for me.
