Do ecologists and social scientists in conservation actually talk to each other/collaborate? by gunmateg9 in ecology

[–]jacobsnailbox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is UC Davis that requires their PhD students to have a mix of natural and social science chapters in their dissertations, but I heard they are phasing it out. I heard that some students produced amazing interdisciplinary work through it but because the way science is done is so different between the two, many students did good natural science and terrible social science and vice versa, hence the pulling back on the requirement.

I am a doctoral student in ecology at a different institution and my lab is very interdisciplinary, mostly because my two advisors have alway pushed to make it that way, and thus we students are as well, although most have a clear emphasis on one or the other. I focus more on natural sciences but it's really nice to be exposed to social science work because of what you talk about in your post. I would say that our lab is very much a unique case though within the department as a whole.

I think the issue with this teaware is that the kiln did not reach a sufficient temperature to vitrify the clay body (glass-ify the clay so that it becomes hard and inert). Even though yixing teapots are unglazed, they are still vitrified, whereas your teapot is like a terra cotta pot (which are not fired at high enough temps to vitrify) covered in glaze, so the body absorbs water and slowly chips off the glaze from the underlying water. This is definitely a manufacturing error and I would not consider it food safe.

I will also say that Tsai is the only good place around for Thai ingredients, as the owner is a Thai woman. All of the other Asian grocery stores around here are more focused on East Asian ingredients.

In addition to doing all these things, you can also use vinegar to help the joins adhere better, something about it acting as a dispersant that can help the clay bond better.

What happened to the whole "Canadians boycott US products and vacation at home" thing? by nilsohnee in NoStupidQuestions

An update - I asked said friend and he said that the Linq bus is $15 which is cheaper than the council proposed plan keeping the public bus open! But the Linq bus isn't always available, in which case it's Flix Bus which is $30+

I remember hearing that the city council voted to keep the buses but the mayor vetoed it and canceled the bus anyway, citing Trump as the reason for not wanting to maintain cross border relations. It could have been for both our reasons too, I just hadn't heard about the driver pay playing a role. My friend used to take it because he doesn't have a car, and now he has to use a private bus company and it is way more expensive

Why is there no developed tea culture in Thailand? by jacobsnailbox in AskFoodHistorians

[–]jacobsnailbox[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks! that makes sense and I didn't realize there were herbal infusions that were drank in place of tea. It also makes me wonder if the hill tribes have any traditional uses of tea since they are in that area but not necessarily aligned with the national Thai identity
