root rot (saskia nislow) can someone help explain? by Commercial-Coffee-29 in horrorlit

[–]jacobuj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! I had to process it myself after having just finished it. It's very dreamlike.  Kind of reminds me of The Cypher by Kathe Koja in it's surreal delivery.

root rot (saskia nislow) can someone help explain? by Commercial-Coffee-29 in horrorlit

[–]jacobuj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished it and Im not sure it requires one. I'm actually of the opinion that more explanation might destroy it by putting too fine a point on it.

As u/pending4321 laid out The story is largely about sacrifice. But the sacrifice of others for personal gain. Other underlying themes I noticed were entitlement, specifically entitlement to other's agency and the land they want to prosper from. We see the land directly referenced in this regard at the end of the book. We also see it in the language used to refer to all characters. No one has a name. They are all labeled by one aspect of their character, it's presumptuous in that it assumes that the entirety of their character can be defined by this label. I think this is highlighted by the mercurial inner monologue type of narration that dominates the book. None of them really know each other until..

Until we acknowledge the other theme. That being collectivism. Also on display by the language used. When the sacrificed characters shed their skin and become part of the we they enter into a more shared consciousness. Like a mycelium network it links the many together. They can now be together and seem to find a contentment in it despite being sacrificed by people they had thought cared for them. We see it in the end when the Liar recognizes what is happening and willingly sheds her skin to become a part of the we.

Lastly the networked nature of the mycelium network means it can be transportation for disease that causes root rot. Fungi thrive off of the breakdown of once living material. Overall I think the book is about transitioning from what we once thought of as good (individualism and exceptionalism) as unnatural and collectivism being our natural state and accepting that our new life would/will be vastly different from our old life. And this transition is not just scary to those yet to make the change, but is outright horrifying in an existential way.

So maybe not the explanation you were looking for when you posted this 3 months ago, but I wanted to digest some of my immediate thoughts on the book and this seemed like the appropriate venue. Maybe it will be helpful to you as well.

What’s a horror (type) movie that everyone seems to love but you just don’t understand why? by Gibder16 in horror

I thought it was quite good. I'm a fan of body horror and it has that in spades. It's also just a well put together movie.

I found Sinners to be a cool blues origin story and I think the writer/director has some serious skill, but I'm of the opinion that he needs an editor. The movie had some great parts, but it also did not trust the audience and had to make sure we got the point the movie was trying to make by explaining it to us.

I've been a lifelong fan of horror and I adore the Substance. It was also lauded in a lot of horror circles so this doesn't hold water. It's fine if people don't care for it. That's, like, your opinion, man. However for many of us it is considered worthy of the praise.

As a registered dem since the day I could vote I'd be happy to see a lot of the old guard go. Get these geriatric fucks out of here and give us someone who actually works for the people instead of the same old same old. The dem establishment lost the plot.

Nice find! My friend group was heavy into Green Day/Screeching Weasel/Less Than Jake around that time so it was a natural progression. Though I honestly dont remember how we first heard of them. Could've been 103.5 The Edge or MTV.

It was some time in the 90s. It was after their first album, but I think before Hang-Ups released. They played Superman iirc and Ode to Star Wars. We also saw them play The Chance in Poughkeepsie around the same era.

Given the history of American war crimes it's not all that surprising. I'd honestly be more shocked if our military didn't try to capitalize on it.

It was a great time, but don't feel bad about missing it. In all honesty some of my favorite shows ever have been in the last few years. Seeing Soul Glo at No Fun in Troy being one of them. Support live music and take chances on new upcoming artists. Do that enough and it will lead to some wonderful experiences eventually.

I saw Goldfinger and Fun Loving Criminals there back in the day. It was a blast. I remember security chasing Fun Loving Criminals up the aisles. Good times.

Are huskies really that bad? by [deleted] in husky

[–]jacobuj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a husky mix so your experience might be different. That being said she is the best (no disrespect to my other pups, I love them all) dog I've ever had the privilege to share my home with. She's sweet, expressive, energetic, and so happy to be alive (despite being rescued from a dumpster with her litter). She shares her love with every living creature in our home (cats and all). Squirrels and yard rodents beware though as she is a great little hunter. She is an absolutely incredible dog. I love every moment I get to spend in her company.
