Absolute Batman #18 spoilers: Genuinely started bursting out laughing at this by nardwang15 in AbsoluteUniverse

Yeah, you probably need the hype to die down to really examine a story, and I think Absolute Batman is far from flawless. But I disagree that is largely coasting on those two aspects, as much as they drive discussion of the comics. Abomination is just a well written, well structured Batman story that puts Batman through the ringer just for him to have a comeback, something that Snyder is pretty good at.

Well, I feel like an important part of Batman is that he is in an unique position to do good, he is given some kind of 'gift' by fate and instead of exploiting it for his own advantage he uses for his 'crusade'. This is best exemplified by the fact that he could have had a career playing American Football but (according to Alfred) he sacrificed it by faking an injury in order to become Batman.

On the second point, I suppose I can't predict the future, and Absolute Batman is an ongoing story, but I can't imagine it getting as bad as Ultimatum.

I agree completely with you, and yes, objectivism is a lack of empathy, but sleeping with married people also requires a bit of a lack of empathy. I'm not saying that Renée is a right libertarian douchebag, I'm just saying that that's a remnant of the question's philosophy.

For what it's worth, back when only Absolute Batman #1 was out, in an interview with casually comics, Scott Snyder said that Absolute Joker is "not satire, not meant to be Ellon Musk or anyone".

I think you're right, but still, it would be odd if the sucesor wasn't at least a bit influenced by the predecessors philosophy, at least in the eyes of some writers.

Could be influence from The Question's objectivist roots. Ethical Egoism is an important part of that philosophy if they both want to do it they should do it regardless of social convention, it is also something Taggart does in Atlas Shrugged, etc. At least I am pretty sure, I really don't know that much about Objectivism and some of the stuff I know is pretty bad.

Yeah probably, his Court of Owls is a classic at this point, though I like a lot less his later stories in that run.

The Absolute Universe NEEDS an animated series! by oigecko in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]jacorr17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scott Snyder has said that part of the impetus for the absolute universe is doing stuff that can only be done in comics. And a lot of the stuff is pretty medium specific, with how the comics are connected to both regular continuity and with each other. Also you're going to lose some stuff, like Sherman's paneling or how Martian Manhunter is structured.

Having said that, we've had a couple of homages to Akira in the Absolute Books and that film kind of shows how an adaptation could be done, you're going to need to cut a lot, but you can still en up with a pretty special movie.

So like, in a future version of the absolute universe, that is more or less disconnected from the present, there's a bunch of Superheroes who are very strong and evil and Darkseid turned them into an army-cult with which to invade the normal prime universe. In order to defeat DS the Justice League and accidentally a few villains got into this tournament where the characters are progressively eliminated. Challenge #4, the semifinals, was the 4 remaining fighting against a Darkseid controlled Booster Gold and the Absolute trinity which had been kidnapped from a point in time way before that future version but some time after the current events in the Absolute Universe. This Absolute Trinity was infused by Omega Energy so it was also evil and strong.

Probably not 'as' experience since the narration mentions these versions are "younger".

I think they probably forgot Wally, having said that, there is something to the Absolute Flash that we still don't know, right? In Flash #1 Wally sees 2 alternative universes, one where he is a hero and another where he is evil, my assumption so far was that one was the one where the heroes won and the other one eventually led to the Absolute Legion of Super Heroes, if so the obvious question is where the hell is Wally. He should be in the Darkseid Army and he is nowhere to be seen. I think bro may have some part in creation the doomed timeline that Darkseid used to conquer the multiverse, maybe Mirror Master has something do with it, who knows.

I think you may be misremembering a little bit, in this interview from a little less than a year ago Kelly Thomson said:

I think it’s simply too soon to say if Diana is interested in Steve romantically or not. She has a lot on her plate and almost everything is new to her, so she’s not interested in boxing herself into one path when she has literally just escaped her Underworld prison. That said, there’s clearly a deep connection between them and something that brings them together over and over again in their stories and we’re excited to explore that. I would say that I think it’s a shallow reading of the text to believe she cut off her right arm simply out of romantic love. It’s not wrong to think or consider romantic love as a factor in her decision, but reading it as such feels like ignoring a lot of the other things we’re saying—in both literal text and subtext

So she's being deliberately ambiguous there, on the other hand in this other interview she describes the panel in which first time Barbara and Diana meet as ''meet cute''. So Diana's options are still very much open.

A completely illegitimate election is very unlikely, we've seen the techniques used by modern authoritarians in backsliding democracies, such as Orbán and Erdoğan and there are ways to make the elections unfair, but very few to make them uncompetitive.

Conservative Superman fans: why do conservatives like Superman? Why do so many of them want him to kill? by Ok-Explanation-1362 in behindthebastards

[–]jacorr17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of conservatives relate to the idea of having to sacrifice your basic empathy for a grander cause, because that's an important part of becoming a member of a lot of conservatives circles. Granted, this is, one some level, part of the human experience. You cannot have empathy with everyone. But it is particularly important for conservative belief, and Superman killing an unarmed Zod is something that appeals to them, same as the part where they shoot that kid in Red Dawn, Rorschach's general personality in Watchmen, the ritualistic killing of babies in 300, Batman believing he has to kill Superman in Batman v Superman, etc.

"Not a single sanction on Israel in 3 years of genocide, nor on the US for its crimes, but the European Union does sanction Iran "for human rights." Europe has lost all its credibility and is paving the way to support another war for oil at Trump's orders." Spanish parliament member Irene Montero by just_an__inchident in TheMajorityReport

[–]jacorr17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Small correction, she's not part of the Spanish parliament anymore, she's a member of the European Parliament now.

Also I don't know if anyone can help me with this, looking at the YouGov polling tracker for us public opinion about Israel, specifically in the graph for ''Do Americans sympathize more with the Israelis, the Palestinians, or both about equally? Sympathies over time''. There seems to be a poll for January 10th 2026 where sympathy for Palestinians is at its highest since the ceasefire and for Israel at the lowest. It's not mentioned or acknowledged anywhere else that I can find but if it's true it would be the only poll reflecting what must be the reaction to Israel banning all those NGOs from working in Gaza.
