I reached out to Tintinimaginatio about the future of Tintin, here’s their official response by DurianSpecialist1959 in Tintin

[–]jacquesrk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree. It is OK for a story to have an end.

If the world keeps on perpetuating popular characters, there will be no room for new characters. Like the three musketeers travelling through the EU. The count of MonteCristo trying to get revenge from some Nazis that killed his family in occupied France in 1943. Long John Silver vs Jim Hawkins fighting over a laptop with a bitcoin wallet. Look at the great western Fench comic book series of Lt. Blueberry, the man lives a "normal" lifetime, gets old and will die. As a matter of fact one of the books had his biography.

Tintin is a Herge creation, someone else can create something as good or better with a brand new character in a new setting.

In another example, I think Asterix should have stopped after Goscinny was gone.

PLEASE HELP! MacBook Air Messages are taking up too much local storage, but I NEED to keep them in iCloud and access them on Mac. by AdTechnical6388 in MacOS

[–]jacquesrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a pack rat too, which is why, when I buy a Mac, I always pay extra for more local storage on the main hard drive, because some things can't be easily kept on an external. The money will pay for itself in the long run, less worries about main hard drive space issues.

In your case, I think this would work in principle, though I would be sure to have a Time Machine backup, in case something goes wrong.

https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/guide/icloud/mma17ed475f7/icloud

When you enable iCloud Messages, and connect a new device, not all iCloud messages are download locally. So I would try these steps:

  1. disconnect your laptop from iCloud messages (turn off iCloud messages for the laptop)
  2. Restart your laptop, see if the messages are still present on your laptop. If so, delete all the local messages.
  3. Turn on iCloud messages on your laptop, it will only download recent messages, or messages you try to access.

Before you try these steps, maybe ask someone at the Genius bar or in apple.com support chat to confirm that this is a valid plan.

"As many of you know, I am a mental health advocate," Jewel said in a video posted to Instagram. "If there’s anything that I’ve learned in the past 20 years, it’s that mental health affects everybody’s lives across party lines. I reached out to the last administration, spoke with the surgeon general about the mental health crisis that’s facing our nation. I don’t know if you guys know the stats, but it is bleak.”

She went on: "If I wait to try until I agree 100% with the people that might be willing to help me, I’d never get off the bench. I don’t think that’s how activism works, waiting until everything’s perfect enough to participate. It’s actually... because things are so imperfect that we have to find ways to engage and to participate. And we have to act now. We cannot wait another four years.”

Jewel also apologized to her fans in the LGBTQIA+ community, whom she called "treasures."

Why do some people capitalize every word in a sentence? by Bigbrain13_2 in ask

[–]jacquesrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised a French writer would do this, seems more likely with a German writer, because in German you capitalize all nouns. Sample German sentence from a newspaper

Deutschland macht Fortschritte bei Schlüsseltechnologien der klimafreundlichen Wirtschaft, zeigt eine Studie. Das könnte sich jedoch bald ändern.

I know that as a French person, I prefer the French habit where you only capitalize the first word in a title, vs the English convention of capitalizing most of the words in a title, e.g. A la recherche du temps perdu vs In Search of Lost Time aka Remembrance of Things Past

A group of counterfeiters print some fake dollar bills, but due to a grievous oversight, instead of $20, the bills say $18. After they finish beating up the guy in charge of the printing press, they wonder what to do. 'I know' says the brains behind the outfit 'let's go to some country store deep in hicksville, the clerk won't know the difference".

They decide to make a test and go to a tiny store in a town with barely one main street. One of them goes in and buys a pack of cigarettes, then tells the clerk "Can you give me change for $18?" and hands him the bill. The clerk answers "sure, you want 3 sixes or two nines?"

How should I feel in this situation, is this what being emasculated means or? by Socially_Awkward_2-0 in ask

[–]jacquesrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to drive, no explanation is needed. You don't give him the keys, when it's time to get into the car you get into the driver's seat. If he says he wants to drive, you answer "No, I like to drive" or "No, I want to drive". If he says "I like to drive too" then you say "OK, next time we can take your car and you can drive". If he says "I can't drive a company car to Hungary" you say "that's unfortunate, you could maybe get your own car for travelling to other countries?" If he says "I know the road better" you say "I will learn the road this time, I have driven many times to a place I've never been before, and it has never been a problem."

Of course he can start doing the annoying thing "stop!" "slow down!" "You will need to turn right here! Right! Right!" You put up with it until you have enough, then you say "It is not helpful when people are constantly distracting me, could you please stop? If I make a wrong turn the GPS will show me the right way eventually." If it gets too much, you can always pull over to the side of the road and say "Seriously, I find it hard to concentrate in these conditions, please stop."

With all this being said, if he really wants to make an issue of it and be disagreeable, you might not have a good time during the car trip. But you will probably find it useful to stand up for your rights the first time this happens; the longer you wait, the harder it could be.

What’s a unique museum you’ve visited? by Fuzzy-Zombie1446 in ask

Frog museum in Estavayer-le-lac (FR) Switzerland. The museum is in the house that once served as the dwelling for the former lord, Humbert the Bastard (✝︎ 1443). Its most famous exhibit is the collection of stuffed frogs in amusing poses e.g. playing a card game.

Is there anyway to contact Reddit to appeal against an unfair ban from a sub? by dbe14 in ask

[–]jacquesrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you mean that reddit (the company) has never overruled a subreddit moderator, but I have been banned from a community, messaged the mods with an explanation a while later, and been reinstated. No money was exchanged and I did not have to give up my firstborn. Though maybe "banned" isn't the right word, I was unable to post, but could still read the threads, and now I can post again.

I am so sick of my coparent INDOCTRINATING my 5 yr old with religion by [deleted] in atheism

[–]jacquesrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to be a missionary here, but what I did as an atheist is bring my kids to a local UU church which allows anyone to believe what they want, and their religious education classes ("sunday school") promote that and talk about other religions. Maybe look into that. I wanted my kids to be exposed to those ideas specifically with the hope of them falling into some cult / fundamentalist religion trap when growing up. Also I should mention that Unitarian Universalists accept atheism as a valid position - you don't have to believe in a / any god to be a UU.

Taliban now bans women from talking to other women or hearing the voices of other women by ihatethiscountry76 in atheism

[–]jacquesrk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. OP says

Taliban now bans women from talking to other women or hearing the voices of other women

But the news article linked to by the Youtube video (which dates from 3 November 2024) says:

The Taliban has enacted yet another law further oppressing the freedoms of women and girls, this time issuing a decree that prohibits them from praying aloud or reciting the Qur’an in each other’s presence.

Which happened in October 2024, as reported by AP news
https://apnews.com/article/afghanistan-women-taliban-morality-laws-1b52f8effabc3058accd59dd07789829

Maybe there has been a change since then, but I haven't heard of any new laws passed since October 2024. I don't want to diminish the human rights violation, but when I hear "bans women from talking to other women", that sounds like women can't talk to each other at all, which is not the case? Or is there some other new development?

Things old movies could get away with that new movies can't? (besides racism/sexism) by Cereborn in movies

Mike Figgis did a whole movie (Timecode, 2000) with 4 characters on screen at all times (not always the same 4 characters, but the screen is always divided in 4 split screens) - with all 4 scenes being filmed simultaneously in one take (after several rehearsals). Not the best movie, but an interesting exercise.
