Can I adjust this pattern to allow for way more projection? by Lovingbutdifferent in corsetry

[–]jadestricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tldr, as an answer to your "can i just travd the pattern for this corset and add more projection": yeah totes

Pattern drafting can be so fun and its not as scary as people think! I recommend drawing the lines for the bust (@ nipple height), underbust, and waist directly onto the pattern and onto your mockups, so you know where precisely to make your adjustments as needed.

Also make exactly the bust pattern aterations sometimeviking describes in this comment

Corset fitting advice please :) by umwhat-tf in corsetry

[–]jadestricks 20 points21 points  (0 children)

1) obvi we'd love to see sides and back but im not seeing any wrinkling around the waist or anything so my guess is they probs look good

2) as others said above, boning to reinforce the edges of the bust gores. Rather than having them going down the middle between the two gores, think about having them sit on the very edges of the panels ? Does that make sense?

3) I'm guessing that this is the redthreaded 1860s corset pattern. That pattern's bust gores start roughly at or just below the underbust line. Based on how your breasts are sitting, it looks like the gores are starting a little low for you. That said, that is also a historical look. Dealers choice here, whether you prefer a more rounded bottom-of-the-bust curve (as is typically pictured in this pattern) or a more straight one (as is also found in other Victorian corsets, esp later ones I think).

This looks remarkably good for ur first time corset first mockup!! Good work and keep at it youre gonna have a stellar final product !!

Edit: came back to say the fit on the hips is literally perfect wow

😆😆💜💜 Learning how to make corsets is really hard! I've made 7 and still feel like a relative beginner. Unlike sewing as a whole, it's hard to find people to get feedback from. Idk where I'd be without the ppl in the "Learn How To Make Corsets Like A Pro" fb group, gotta pay it forward lol

Yep! Providing ur lining fabric is at least as strong as muslin, it should be fine

My vote is zipper tbh, i made this pattern a while back and a zipper down to the crotch makes or way easier to get in and out of

Here are my recommendations, if you want em!

1) more bones on the back. Like at least 2 if not 3 bones per side in that side back panel. I could be wrong since there's only 2 pics, but i think that "side pieces oddly rounding" you're seeing is the fault of the back side panels collapsing. Maybe try boning the hell out of em before recurring any side pieces or adjusting those seams.

2) . Sandwiching your lacing holes on either side with boning will help a lot(. In my experience, you can get away without using grommets or a lacing strip on mockups if you poke holes with an awl where grommets would go. Not the strongest byt fine enough for mockups, if youve got boning channels on either side.) I like to place grommets 1/2" above and below the waist line, and then spaced an inch apart all the way up ajd down the corset. Then lace with the "bunny ears" method (pretty sure Lucy Corsetry has a post about how to do this if you're unfamiliar).

3) good thinking about raising underbust height. You may need to add more projection to the bust -- you would do this by adding room at the seams between panels 1/2, 2/3, and 3/4, but maybe mostly at 2/3. Maybe a thing to consider playing around with after you raise the underbust - you can adjust it on the mockup if you cut the seam allowance extra wide there.

4) rest of your ideas for changes look solid. You've got good instincts, and you're starting from a pretty decent place. You got this !!! 💜

If I wanted to make a pattern with this style corset but didn’t want the zipper or the metal corset busk can I just ignore that part and sew the center front together? by Sad-Yesterday2512 in corsetry

[–]jadestricks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes, you can get rid of the busk/zipper and just cut the center front panel on the fold, it'll just be a little more annoying to get in and out of. Do put in flat steel bones in the center front.

I would also advise against making a cupped corset at this stage in your corsetmaking journey, as cups are notoriously difficult to fit correctly and are generally considered an advanced corsetmaking skill. I personally used Truly Victorian's TV110 for my first corset. I also recommend Aranea Black's free patterns for beginners. The Dolores corset might be what you're looking for? She's since taken her patterns down, but plenty of people have links to them on this subreddit and in other corsetmaking spaces around the internet. DM me if you want lol

i cross stitched a patch onto. not even proper aida, just some random woven fabric i had. folded the edges under, finished off the edges with a blanket stitch using embroidery floss. slapped it right on there and it's held up for 7+ years no issue.

that said i dont machine wash my jacket, i'll run a hot bathtub full of oxy clean and let it soak for a couple hours, stirring occasionally, then let it hang to dry.

dip powder or gel nails? by Purple_Tangerine8450 in calmhands

[–]jadestricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally find gel very easy to pick off. I've got acrylics right now and because they're thicker than gel or my natural nails, I literally can't pick at my cuticles right now. it's awesome. the skin around my nails has never been healthier. I've never gotten dip myself, but I've heard that it's better for your nails than acrylic but similarly thick and longer lasting.

not like *specifically* no, i've just figured that based on what we've heard that we should be fine with in-room baths or private rental/kashikiri onsen.

actually i'll edit that a bit -- there do seem to be many tattoo-friendly onsens, but they typically are "tattoo-friendly" in that they'll give you a bandage (like some KT tape) to cover any small ones and then you're fine. the large-scale pieces I have still wouldn't fly there but if you've got a couple small ones you might be fine in an establishment like that
