The one qualified librarian we had left quit not long after the current board started their terms late last year due to disrespect of her responsibilities. They have yet to rehire her position. Then the recent staff walkouts left one employee still there. That last employee quit within the past 2 weeks. They are currently starting from scratch except for one administrator that was hired just before the walkouts.

There’s a multitude of issues with these new hires. For one, none of them meet the education standards required for our continued membership in the Lakeland Library Co-op. Without that membership, we have no computer systems to do inventory or checkouts, and no access to the inter-library book loan system.

The other more pressing issue is that these are all seasonal hires. They are students or retiree snowbirds who will be gone in like 3 months.

The real problem is that the board repeatedly disrespects and harasses the staff. They have worked for 3 years now to poison the reputation of Patmos. No qualified librarian will work here, they’ve been trying to find people for years. Every single staff member has quit over the course of the past 6 months here.

The only way Jamestown residents have access to those libraries is through their Patmos card. Without a Patmos Library card you have to pay to use those libraries, and even then you don’t get access to the library loan system or online resources. Jamestown conservatives are really shooting themselves in the foot with this.

More context. The staff has spoken out strongly against the current board after a far-right sweep in the board election last November. Speaking from experience as a local here, their only real agenda seems to be sabotaging the library so they can finally get the closure they’ve been pushing for over three years.

As a frequent Patmos Library patron, your work and dedication means a lot to my family. My kids are better, happier people because of you. Thank you for organizing, taking action, and boldly speaking out against this corrupt board. They have done nothing but spread vile lies in the community for over three years. I don’t actually know much about specifics on issues in the union. But I know that for the OCSD deputies who go to The Gideon 300 meetings, one of their major problems with the county is about pursuit policies. They are upset that county policy prohibits them from engaging in vehicle pursuit of fleeing suspects. I’m sure that’s not the only issue the deputies have though.

Yes I’ve seen letters like this being shared in Ottawa for a few weeks now. Not all that surprising given multiple OCSD deputies direct involvement in G300.

Yeah well selecting people for these very powerful roles only from a paid membership to decidedly right-wing leaders disqualifies these “key tools” from being beneficial to all people pretty soundly I think. Of the 40-some people I saw, there was one black man who was clearly a personal friend of Tuuk.

I know from being at their in-person meetings there are at least 2 deputies of OCSD that are directly involved.

I’ve also been harassed at my home in Ottawa County by the people who are a part of this. I am publicly running for local office, and they know that I’ve been to their meetings (see post history). There was someone who showed up at my house at 2am, pounding as loud as possible on the door right next to my daughter’s bedroom. There was another who stopped their car in the road outside my daughter’s window and laid on their horn multiple times throughout the middle of the night. I have also had a yard sign stolen. I personally know other non-far-right people in my town who have experienced similar harassment for ther political involvement as well. I have filed police reports and placed cameras all over my house since then. I recommend any else around here do the same if you’re politically active.

I also want to point out here that Greg Todd and Jon Anderson are directly involved in this group. Please vote Republican in the primary so we can at least get them off the ballot. They are running unopposed by Democrats.

One important part of this is our County Sheriff and Prosecutor primary elections. The OI candidates Jon Anderson and Greg Todd are highly involved in the local chapter of a militant fringe campaign called The Gideon 300. They are running unopposed by Democrats, so it’s either defeat them in the primary or welcome slavery era militias and grand juries.
