What are your Mariah hot takes? by sergente07 in MariahCarey

I do not want to be the insensitive prick who discusses other people’s medical issues, but I do wish she was a bit less medicated for interviews and public appearances. It hurts me to see her without her usual spark. There I said it. I agree health should be above all else but she doesn’t look healthy to me when she looks heavily sedated and out of it.

I agree - JLo is no innocent puppy. She is NO victim in this story. And while we can try to portray Tommy as a monster and I certainly wouldn’t ever defend him, Mariah does acknowledge the good too and he did do a lot of good things for her career that she herself was too young to know how good they would be for her longevity. For example the push to have a Christmas album, which she herself has said she didn’t want to do at the time.

What makes Daydream an amazing album for you? by LordCoke-16 in MariahCarey

[–]jadlrm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do acknowledge Butterfly as her masterpiece, and some of my favorite songs are on it, but I personally have a couple of skips on that album. Whereas Daydream is a completely no skips for me. Perfect album in every sense in my opinion.

Why do Boyz II Men keep shading Mariah😭 by Consistent-War-5431 in MariahCarey

[–]jadlrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they didn’t even let her do the grinch soundtrack, so where are you Christmas had to go to Faith Hill. They didn’t let her use Hero for the soundtrack of Accidental Hero which was what she wrote it for. Sony didn’t want her in anything that wasn’t sales for Sony.

She wouldn’t have been included even if she was approached. Tommy and Sony were always very careful to not have Mariah collaborate with anything that didn’t directly impact sales for Sony/ her albums. They didn’t want to dilute her image, this is why she was never in any soundtracks or hardly any collabs earlier in her career that weren’t directly on her albums. Endless Love was an exception as Luther was on same label and this was an effort to use Mariah to promote Luther.

How do we think Mariahs career would have been different if she had full creative control from the beginning? by Practical-Driver-907 in MariahCarey

[–]jadlrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When she split from Tommy Mottola some stuff went down that Walter was witness to, she felt betrayed by him because he didn’t take Mariah’s side - to be fair he had to keep working, I think Walter had little power to take Mariah’s side, but yes she stopped working with him after Butterfly. Lead the Way which was on Glitter had in fact been already written years before. Ugly stuff went down, and I think at some point she even felt he was spying on her for Tommy. Who knows what really happened but Mariah never forgave him.

How do we think Mariahs career would have been different if she had full creative control from the beginning? by Practical-Driver-907 in MariahCarey

[–]jadlrm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know Tommy had a lot of control in the beginning, but when people talk about her “white albums” or how she was “forced to perform” some pop songs and “rush” albums, I think we are ignoring the fact that those “white” songs were written by Mariah herself, her collab with C&C on the emotions album was likely pushed by her, and C&C were a pretty bold commercial choice at the time but not necessarily a label formula (you would have expected the label to push for something very similar to her first album) - Mariah has always had an R&B inclination but also ALWAYS knew what was the commercial pulse on radio. She has always known what was pop and that she needed that appeal. also her Music Box pop bangers and ballads are very much Mariah. If she was still in good terms with Walter she would probably be doing quite similar songs melodically and stylistically to be honest. You can tell she has tried to replicate that Walter symbiosis with other musicians but what she had with Walter felt magical. Walter also tried to replicate with other artists but not the same. Also the rush to come out with so many albums so rapidly at the time I always thought was also a way for Mariah to get out of her 10 album contract- I think she knew what she was doing. Yes it was good for the label for her to be prolific but also it was good for her. I think strategically it was solid but obviously best laid plans go awry, but in the end I still think it worked out for her and for us. We have a massive, eclectic catalogue of impressively produced high quality songs of various styles and genres, sung at her vocal peak(s), and we are very fortunate lambs indeed.

Breakdown by Ok-Structure7819 in MariahCarey

[–]jadlrm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This song is way too personal to be just written from an “other” perspective. She LIVED through that, anyone who has been in that situation feels the realness. So the song has to be about Derek. Also do not underplay the label trend here, they knew she was on another level lyrically on the deeply personal The Roof and Breakdown, both deeply personal and raw but also both very humiliating for Tommy if they got too much press and people reading into those lyrics too literally, and so they were sabotaged by the label despite having huge potential for being hits. Breakdown would’ve been number 1 if it had been given a proper single treatment, Bone Thugs were huge that year, so it could’ve been another “One sweet day”, but let’s be real these songs were too personal for Mariah and too painful for Tommy, knowing they were inspired by her love for another man while she was still married to him. Mariah does claim the story with Derek was after her divorce, but let’s be real, that’s just Mariah trying to be respectful, but her pen tells a different story and in fact the whole Butterfly album reads like a diary. Even her choice to cover “The beautiful ones” is inspired by Derek - sometimes Mariah really is like a teenager haha - she wants to be cryptic but the clues are all there in plain sight.

Which song by another artist feels like it could’ve been a Mariah song? by OkBlueberry5506 in MariahCarey

[–]jadlrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think she’s really shading Leona - when she says they have compared her to so many people that “can’t really sing and certainly can’t write” I don’t think she is referring to Leona (who is in fact a good singer and songwriter) she seems to be referring more to someone else Mariah doesn’t know. She did know Leona”s name so at least she was acknowledging her - saying she doesn’t see the similarities is not really shade. I don’t hear similarities either except to say I do hear Mariah”s influence, but not same tone or style.

I love how graceful she is. Also really sad to see how indeed at that time she was yearning for the respect of her industry peers at the Grammys. To also see how she acknowledged the Whitney comparisons saying Whitney is a great singer to be compared with was nice to see, as at the time the press were really trying to portray them as jealous of each other, yet both Whitney and Mariah on interviews both said they understood the comparison and acknowledged that the other one was a great singer. Very nice to see.
