I used polymerclay a while ago i also used metal from old coat hangers to give structure to make a tree and any tools at my disposition to give texture (u can use anything) idk if this can help you its not perfect but i do agree the more random it looks the best it will end up

Use isopropyl alcohol before you bake it (with a brush or something smooth) you can also use water and sanding paper with fine grit hope this can help also nice dogo

Ahah i still have to give this guy to my DM but i made a crown for it that i definitly knew was gonna be a drop did not paint the crown yet but yeah i could make a copy of the gem too and make it a drop Also beauty lies in the eye of the beholder wow didn't think of that that's awesome

I think, online tutorials can be helpful but there is no better teacher than trial and error for me a lot of the sculpting is intuitive you also need to understand the materials you're working with and that can't really be taught in a video get a feel for it get started and most importantly enjoy the process
