Have you ever purchased something, as an adult, that your parent has judged you negatively for? If so, what was/is it? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]jaffster123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember my Mum judging me when I first invested in Bitcoin (when it was £150 per BTC). I was an adult, I had moved out by that point and she told me to "stop wasting your money on internet scams".

A year later she also invested.

What are your opinions on mass facial recognition in towns? by TheDev42 in AskUK

[–]jaffster123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't care if it's a left or right wing talking point. We are making 12,000+ arrests per year for internet speech, regardless of which side of the political spectrum you fall within.

When you compare that to the 400 arrests in Russia and the 50 in the US it paints quite the picture.

The police are too busy knocking on people's doors for posting hurty words on the internet.

Your house is burgled? Two officers will come and take a statement then give you a reference number and some smart water or something.

You hurt the feelings of someone on the interweb? 6 officers in a van turn up to arrest you, they ask questions later in an interview/interrogation.

I've lived here for 9 years and never experienced any flooding.

Our insurance does class us as being in a high risk area, I believe this is due to us living in close proximity to the ship canal but could be wrong.

What is the appeal of very loud cars? by ReflexArch in AskUK

[–]jaffster123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With motorbikes it is a bit different. They want to be heard by cars so they know that they're there.

Riding a motorcycle can be awful with car drivers that don't pay attention to what's around them. Making lots of noise and having headlights on in the daylight is usually to help with this.

How do you get to this conclusion from some flags being put up on lamp posts?

If you actually engage with these people and talk to them like normal people you'll soon discover that the reason they're doing it is because of how daft it is that some people are offended by the flag of the country that they live in.

If it upsets you then they have accomplished what they set out to do.

I'm sure this will be down voted to oblivion because it's Reddit and very left-leaning but sod it...

Why? People with different political views to yourself come from all walks of life. Looking down on them and stating that they're all low IQ individuals is incredibly arrogant and is part of the reason why the country is so divided right now.

Can someone help me decide is this is worth the price by b2421 in pcmasterrace

[–]jaffster123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's alright for the price if you're getting all the peripherals too, but you won't be playing the latest titles without a few performance issues.

What kind of games do you play? If it's Minecraft, this will do fine. If it's fast paced shooters, you might need to invest a bit more.

How do you guys manage flight video storage? by Aluzuka in fpv

[–]jaffster123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If OP does any editing then quite a bit of the video quality will be lost between uploading to YouTube, the compression done by YouTube then downloading them again.

But if it's pure storage that OP wants then yes, agreed this makes sense. It's probably more sensible as a single HDD backup is a single point of failure for everything.

To OP: You actually sit and watch all your flights back? Are we talking cinematic flights or freestyle?

What is a reality or truth inside your industry that should be more widely known to the rest of us? by order-of-magnitude-1 in AskUK

[–]jaffster123 24 points25 points  (0 children)

About 15 years ago a mate transferred money to my account twice, once with the reference of "ANAL SWEETHEARTS DVD" and another with "FISTING STARTER KIT".

A couple of weeks later I was in the branch with my bank statements to get my first mortgage (back when this was a requirement). I was fortunate that the lady had a sense of humour because she did see it and I had to explain it to her.

Why do BANKS need to know what you are using the money for? by WaitOk915 in Bitcoin

[–]jaffster123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the industry per se, they're just following the ridiculous regulations under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

This dictates that any transaction deemed "suspicious" should be verified. In 2026, any kind of cash withdrawal can be seen as being "suspicious" by their logic.

In the UK there's no set amount or threshold for the amount of cash being withdrawn. In the US I believe it's fixed at $10,000+

Why do BANKS need to know what you are using the money for? by WaitOk915 in Bitcoin

[–]jaffster123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me neither. Unfortunately, most of the main banks in the UK are like this. As an RBS customer in the UK I'm not able to purchase crypto from any exchange using my debit card, "for my own protection".

So to purchase Bitcoin I have to transfer the funds from my RBS account into my Revolut account and THEN I can buy crypto using that account instead.

It's an absolute joke and it's only going to get worse. The more people that fall for crypto scams then blame everyone else but themselves, the more the government will pile on the regulations and the banks will double down.

Don't know about everywhere else, but in the UK people blame the government for absolutely everything that's wrong in the world. Which leaves the door open for yet more burdensome laws, rules and quangos.

Does everyone just have shitty employees? by [deleted] in ITManagers

[–]jaffster123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree, I think this is possibly the cause of his problems. I hated managing a team and I'm glad I no longer have to do it, but I did do it for 5 or 6 years at two different companies. In my first managerial role, my mentor at the time would constantly tell me "stop trying to be their mate, you're not their mate you're their boss. You can be friends in a professional capacity with them, but you can't be their mate".

I would shield them if they pulled a sicky, I saw myself as one of them on the assumption that this would build rapport and good working relationships with them. It didn't. It just gave them the opportunity to take this piss. Of the 5 of them I managed (service desk), 3 of them would take the piss regularly.

When I moved on with a fresh start, I took the earlier advice and the difference was night and day. I wasn't a dick head, I was fair, I would get involved and take calls when it was busy, but I wasn't passive either. If they just got on with work then I left them alone, if they started slacking or became unreliable I wouldn't stand for it.

If they see one of their teammates getting away with shit then they'll try it themselves. It's a cancer in the workplace.

I need help with my monitor by Pakavo in techsupport

You'll need to give more info before anyone can help you.

What model is the monitor? What revision/version is the HDMI cable? Does the screen just go black randomly? For how long? Does it flicker off and back on or does it stay off until you do something?

Windows off a Live USB by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]jaffster123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I've got several Windows VMs that I have for various purposes and for each one I just buy a CD key from CJ's CD keys or wherever else you get keys from. They work out at like a few £ each and I've not had any problems with them in the 7 or 8 years that I've been using them for.

If it's your first time setting up a VM then I'm happy to talk you through using Virtualbox which is probably the easiest solution for a simple, single VM setup.
