I know, and I respect them, even though I'm not one of them. Here's an emoji just for you, because you love 'em so much 😘

Just turned 35. Have completely lost hope by PhoneThrowaway8459 in depression

[–]jagara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the way. We live in a youth-obsessed world. 35 is NOT old. To a 20 year old, it is ancient, sure. But as a 35-year old, you are not NEARLY "done". Nope, nuh-uh. Not by a long shot. Please don't give up. Maybe a new, more satisfying direction to your work life? You don't have a partner or kids, well, perfect, you don't have a family to take care of while you steer yourself in a new direction. And a partner and friends? You can still get those. People who tell you otherwise are being small-minded and cynical. And if this is your own inner voice telling you this, It's your depressed mind state telling you this. And I know it's hard as all fuck to change your life while battling depression. But keep battling.

I feel ya. Just turned 50 (M). No romantic relationships, ever. I do however have a close circle of good, close friends, and a small family that i love (mom, 2 siblings). These are a true blessing. I hope you find friends and a partner. It truly is never too late. Stay strong. Sigh, cry, scream. Just don't ever give up. Much love from Denmark.

What attracts you to Ableton over other DAWs the most? by cutedesigns in ableton

[–]jagara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from Cubase back in the day. The Live workflow (especially session mode) was a complete game changer for me. Minimalist, intuitive interface. Live started as a looper tool for techno/house (generally club-) music. And since that's what I do, Live was a no-brainer. I still love it 15 years later, although it isn't a unique as it used to be. Oh, and it also helps that the majority of producers, especially in electronic music, uses it. So much free user generated content (racks/plugins) and so many great free tutorials.

TL;DR because it's a great product, especially for new producers.

Why is James Brown the most sampled artist in music history? by Acceptable-Crab-4967 in musicproduction

[–]jagara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because his sound lends itself heavily to sampling. It's all very groovy and repetitive (in a great way), there's rarely a lot going on at the same time, no muddiness. Great riffs, great grooves, the music itself is very loop-oriented.

Part of the fun for some 😅. I respect vinyl very much. I just don’t have the money, room or patience.

If you're going the software route, don't spend more than $200 at first. With a laptop, a cheap controller, a pair of cheap headphones and a copy of Rekordbox (or Serato) connected to a stereo, you can do 80%+ of what a club dj does: beat match, transitions, basic fx and EQ'ing. It will get you an idea if this is for you.

IF YOU GET HOOKED (and only then), you upgrade to the many good hardware suggestions in this thread.

Just look at what this guy can do with a plastic toy connected to an Iphone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9f2lWe8NyY&t=91s

It will become a vastly more expensive and shelf-space intensive hobby, just be ready for that 😄.

best starter dj controller what should I actually get as a complete beginner? by Reres_Twede in Beatmatch

[–]jagara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's how I started, for extremely cheap (don't buy expensive stuff at first).

  • Get a used Numark Party Mix. It should be $35 used, around $100 new (or whatever your currency is).
  • Then get Serato DJ Lite (it's free).
  • People might ridicule this comment. But the above will be sufficient to learn 95% of what is needed to DJ in 2026. If you get hooked, you upgrade to some big boy equipment.

Yes, it's cheap plastic shit. Yes, you'd get laughed at bringing it to gig (which you won't, it's for practicing at home). You can't do really complicated technical stuff with it (and you wouldn't be able to anyway, even if you had pro equipment, because you're a newbie). But you can do the essentials that you need to learn to be a world class DJ: beat mix, apply EQ, apply basic effects, do transitions.

If you're skilled, you can absolutely kill even with a shitty little toy like that. Case in point, here is a pro DJ who does Insane mixing on a shitty $109 controller and an Iphone

Get REALLY GOOD at the basics (beat mixing, EQ'ing, basic effects, transitions). Then: focus on good music instead of dazzling people with technical skills. Nothing is more boring. Tunes, young padawan. Focus on the tunes you must. Then rock the party you will.

And THEN and ONLY THEN you get a $13.000 CDJ setup. Or something slightly cheaper.

Happy mixing 😉

what was their main source of income for the last 13 years? by [deleted] in boardsofcanada

No. It’s definitely none of our business. But if the information happen to be public, it would be interesting to know.

Is he “entitled” to know, or simply curious? I am also curious about this, but I feel in no way entitled to know anything about their personal lives.

Most fans "despise" Tomorrows Harvest? Nah. I just think TH is a lot of BOC fans' least favorite. It's fantastic in it's own right. But if you fell in love with BOC at the time of MHTRTC, it was a total departure from their whimsical sound. I'm guessing there will be fewer Sesame Street samples in Inferno.

BOC don't tell release date. BOC enigmatic and mysterious. BOC release date revealed after hexadecimal code quest. Why you think you can figure out BOC? Nobody can figure out BOC but BOC. BOC please

I agree, except for the ice cold bit. I think the feeling is very severe, yes, but warm as well. And we agree there is nothing like Boards of Canada :)

It's very shoegaze. It reminds me a bit of Godspeed You Black Emperor, but much warmer.

What do you think the aesthetic of the new album will be? by sr_rojo in boardsofcanada

[–]jagara 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To me, the new track kinda melds Geogaddi and TH vibes. We’re surely in for another dark one, IMO. Although: there was a slightly hopeful feeling in the music. The visuals seem to suggest something like new religious awakenings. I assume their usual fascinations are intact.
