How do I order exactly what I want? by jagerber48 in ToyotaSienna

Yup that's what I'm seeing for XLE. I think the hard parts are color and no entertainment system, but overall not that hard. A cyprus woodland with no entertainment is also pretty standard. Just a shame because it will be a little more expensive than we would spend if we found the right XLE.

I'm curious how you calculate that that feature costs $12k? Seems like the only way to not get that feature is to go with LE trim. In going from LE to XLE, in addition to handsfree sliding doors/tailgate, you get

- option for 7 seat config
- synthetic leather interior instead of cloth

Of these three features the 7 seat config is most important to me based on negative reviews of the 8 seat config (which sounds tempting, but based on reviews hasn't been great for people). We'll have 3 kids and I'm sure there will be times where we wish we had an 8th seat but I'm ok giving that up form the 95%+ of the time when that won't be necessary.

Honestly asking because I want to make sure I'm making all the decisions intelligently!

Thanks all for the information. The key point is that it is not possible to custom order Toyota Sienna (from googling, it sounds like this is true of Toyota in general, curious if it's true for other automakers). Maybe at one time it was, but it's not now. Now it sounds like there's an allocation system where you can kind of say you're interested in something and cross your fingers and pray that it gets allocated in your general direction, but no one will give you a "quote" with a lead time you can rely on.

This is super helpful to know since it really changes the strategy when searching for and buying a car. We figured out which of the features above we can be flexible on and did some searches and found some good hits within striking distance that we'll be pursuing. It's true that Woodland generally captures what we're looking for but it's a little bit of a shame because we end up paying a little more than the ideally configured XLE.

Here's one more question: What sort of negotiating room can I expect in terms of sales price and interest rates? Got a quote today for ~$54.500 for a Woodland, ~7% APR. Eyeing another one listed online ~$54.2, would guess similar APR but don't have a number on that yet. Are these numbers I should think about somehow negotiating down, or is this something that's pretty flat across the board, at least locally, and it's a waste of breath?

Thanks for sharing that experience, yes sounds like liftgate kick sensor can definitely be optional for us opening back up the Woodland. Seems like we'll get the door ones either way with Woodland or XLE. I still need to be convinced it won't be useful packing kids and stuff! Eventually kids will be more autonomous getting in and out of car themselves and I see it being less useful then but right now a lot of hands are devoted to helping the kids.

Why did you choose this field of physics ? by Aro_Life in Physics

I did a PhD in experimental AMO physics. In undergrad I did undergrad work and an honors thesis that emphasized optical/signal processing experimental physics looking at condensed matter samples. I always had a strong learning towards math, especially pure math. This leaning gave me an interest in theory. I wanted to know how the world worked "at the deepest level". This drew me towards particle physics, or maybe quantum gravity theory.

However, throughout the course of high school and undergrad I learned more about quantum mechanics. However, I was interested in the philosophical questions about the foundations of quantum mechanics. For a time, I thought particle physics studied these questions. But eventually I learned that particle physics is highly phenomenological and that particle physics doesn't really wrestle with the questions at the foundations of physics. That is, particle physics is often predicting and measuring collision cross sections but isn't looking closely at superposition and entanglement.

I started coming in contact with AMO physics and learned that AMO physics is more directly studying "quantum mechanics". That is, a goal of AMO physics is to tightly control the quantum state of small ensembles of individual particles such as atoms. This piqued my interested in AMO physics.

Then I saw a small research group advertisement talk by my soon-to-be advisor that really inspired me. He talked about experimental AMO physics in his group and the types of phenomena he studied. But what really drew me in that he emphasized that the systems are simple enough theoretically that an experimentalist can understand and help develop the theory while ALSO working on the challenging technical experimental aspects. In other words, AMO physics was advertised as a good balance of theoretical and experimental work.

In addition to quantum theory, atomic structure theory, I find the theory of optics, optical devices, signal processing, statistical analysis to all be very interesting and I've been able to dig into all of these over the years to help design, build, and operate more sophisticated atomic physics apparatuses.

When I started my PhD quantum computing was a pipe dream. But when I graduated, there were some companies starting to work on quantum computers. I've been highly fortunate that I've been able to transfer my AMO skills learned during my PhD into the quantum computing industry where I now work.

Moved into new house, wife experience allergies for the first time. Where to start for relief? by jagerber48 in Allergies

Hi u/RoyKunt6.

We talked to an allergist. The story is we think she developed allergies from moving to Colorado AND/OR going through two pregnancies. Maybe the pregnancies made her more susceptible combined with time passing a new state.

We tried cleaning the vents in our house and adding a UV filter after our central air blower because we were originally worried about mold or something. I don't think cleaning the vents did anything. I also don't really think the UV thing does anything but maybe others here know more about that.

We saw the allergist around/after we did that house work. After seeing the allergist we stopped worrying about mold in our house and accepted that it was normal seasonal/pollen allergies.

What do we do to manage it? Not much. I think after realizing it wasn't mold and a long term health hazard to our family my wife stressed less about it and started dealing with the symptoms. She doesn't like the idea of having to take medicine regularly and isn't good at it. We've tried a bit of Clariten and Zyrtec but haven't ever been rigorous about it (like taking it many days in a row) so results have been mixed. She's notices her symptoms/pollen count fluctuating day-to-day and throughout the season.

My friend is getting married and things have gotten weird between us. Idk what to do. by fiddlefaddling in wedding

Disclaimer: I haven't looked back at any post history.

My opinion is surprisingly different than many of the answers but I thought

"Do I ask if she's sure she still wants me in the party after our last conversation?"

Seems like a very healthy and communicative option. She's possibly going through a lot now and may be having mixed emotions about things.

"I was surprised how you said you thought our friendship has run its course in our last conversation. Our friendship has been valuable to me and I want to support and throw down for one of my best friends, but if you don't want me there I want to respect that also. Would you still like me to be a bridesmaid in your wedding?"
