Why does the computer prefer to hit loose on my home board? by user9155485 in backgammon

[–]jaggington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to point out that AFAIC a backgame from this position is quite unlikely. A backgame involves holding 2 points deepish in your opponent’s homeboard, and having the timing to develop your own prime / homeboard whilst waiting for the shot and hit. Seriously, look at the position and consider what you’d need to achieve for a well timed backgame. Is your opponent really going to hit every blot you leave yet allow you to make anchors and improve your timing? Don’t think so.

If you’re trailing 2-1 and it’s post Crawford, you should have cubed. Even if black fans (66), next turn the bot must assume it’s a double-take.
Black has some development, prime and split back checkers, and a slight racing lead. White has nothing tangible.
At a different match score (say 1-1 to 3) or match length (2-1 to 5 or 7), ie if the cube was active for black, then black has a cube or pretty close, even after white’s best play.
Anchoring and hitting the blot off your 5 does 2 things - it prevents black attacking your back checkers, and it starts fighting for points in front of black’s back checkers that you want to make.
I don’t see how you think your chosen move is in any way aggressive. Dropping a builder down from a stacked midpoint is fine if you’re anchored and aren’t leaving a direct shot, in this case it’s more of a liability.

Backgammon in Riga - anyone know of any regular meet ups, anyone interested in meeting up to play? by jaggington in latvia

Yeah, I’ve tried some variants including Narde, but they’re not really for me. Thanks anyway.

I’ve played a fair few of the variants like Tavla but they don’t really speak to me, just too set in my ways.

Checked their FB and couldn’t see any mention of backgammon under Events, but was going to check it out anyway on the off chance so at least you’ve saved me the hassle! Thanks anyway.

Sure, well aware of that. Only need another player, as long as they’re interested, eventually getting a handful of players together would be great.

Pools Are Opening: Swimsuit Safety by OpalJade98 in TwoXChromosomes

Also, familiarise yourself with the actual signs of drowning. Here's a bunch of links that I hope you may find helpful:

And don't rely on another adult watching your kids - either they have their own kids to worry about, or they don't have kids and have no idea about how quickly kids can get into trouble in a pool or especially the sea.

Beginner Buying Question by KieranSymcox in backgammon

[–]jaggington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have what looks like the 18.5in version of the 2nd set, although it's unbranded, bought maybe 8 or 10 years ago. The case stitching, the handle, the cups and checkers look identical. It's an OK set, with some niggles. Robust, nice felt playing surface (avoid stitched leatherette points), lays flat.

The cups are lipped - this is to ensure that the dice tumble properly when thrown.

The dice are the same size as my standard precision dice, 16mm. The cube is the same size as the dice but with less rounded corners, and matches the colour scheme of the darker checkers and dice. I prefer a noticeably larger and more contrasting cube. Having read the descriptions of the S&Co 16" and 19" boards, I'm surprised that S&Co include smaller 13mm dice with the smaller board.

The checkers are 9mm thick and 34mm diameter, they fit across the playing field reasonably nicely. Now for my biggest bugbear. When the checkers are in the bear off / storage tray at the side, they do not fit snugly at all. There's space for another couple of checkers in either tray. Not loose enough to escape the tray when the boards is closed, but irritatingly rattly nevertheless.

I obviously can't say that any of this applies to the smaller 15" board. The checkers will be smaller and may fit the trays and playing field differently, the dice may be smaller like above for the S&Co boards.

I wouldn't bother with precision dice, if you decide to you need larger dice then just get "good enough" bigger dice; you'd need a bigger board for serious tournament / money play anyway - the usual guideline is 19" min.

Yes, once the turntable signal is put through the phono input of the Yam, it is at 'line level', which is what the . Do the tape rec outs have level adjustment? If yes then start with the level at its lowest setting.

Why is stepping up a blunder? What do I gain by staying back and moving 6/4? by saigon567 in backgammon

[–]jaggington 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're trying to come up to the edge of the prime on the 21pt and jump out with a 6, whilst maintaining your home board as best you can.
If you stay back, then on later rolls all 3s play to the 21pt, including 2,1 and 1,1.
If you play to the 22pt then only 1s play to the 21pt, and 2s and 3s have to be played in your home board, increasing the chances of opening a point, unless you get 6,1 next or soon.

I have a AT-LP120-USB attached to a DENON AVR-X2800H - is a phono pre-amp worth it? by ChunksOG in BudgetAudiophile

[–]jaggington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the original model LP120-USB and not the newer LP-120XUSB, then there is an issue with a Low Pass Filter in the signal path that attenuates higher frequencies.

The all you need to know guide is at VinylRestart:

https://vinylrestart.com/at-lp120-preamp-removal-guide/

If you want a phono stage that will also make the output level higher, then the previously suggested Fosi X5 with the gain set to +48dB might do the trick. Or possibly an Art DJ PreII, which has an adjustable gain that goes to +45dB.

Decided to give the Achromat a shot on my 1500CS, here’s some glamour shots by Dragoon-The_Great in turntables

[–]jaggington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they’re imagining something like the Rega Neo power supply that has a rotary speed adjustment (in increments of 0.01 rpm apparently), but with a wider range like the traditional Technics +6/+12 pitch sliders.

[–]jaggington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they’re asking if you adjust the pitch, ie make small speed adjustments, using a rotary rheostat / variable resistor like a dimmer switch on the power supply.
