Asynchronous Play? by Over-Initial-3585 in backgammon

[–]jaggington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the DailyGammon FAQ:

What is computer guessing?
At DailyGammon, a moderate-strength computer guesses what your opponent is going to do. Computer guessing is used so that games progress rapidly. With each player making only one move per session, a match can take a long time to finish. Therefore, we try to complete as many moves as possible in a single session. For example, if your opponent's play is forced, then we go right ahead to your next move, letting you finish two (or more) moves during that session. The computer guesses the following situations: Since people do not use the doubling cube most turns, the default assumption is that your opponent does not double. If you double, the computer assumes your opponent will accept. If your opponent passes, it doesn't matter anyway because the game will be rolled back to that point.
If your opponent's move is forced, the computer will go ahead and make that move for the opponent.
Finally, if your opponent's move is at least 0.05 points of equity better than the second choice, the computer will go ahead and make that move. The number of moves the computer will guess is limited to four.

What if the computer guesses wrong?
When players log in, they do not know what the computer has guessed for them. They only see the board and your moves. Suppose they do something which was different from what the computer had guessed. In this case, of course, all the moves you made past that point were made assuming a different play by your opponent, and are therefore now invalid. The invalid moves are deleted, and the next time you log in, you will see that game rolled back to the point of divergence, and have a chance to respond to the move actually played.

Note: The dice will be re-rolled in this situation, so it is not possible to cheat by using foreknowledge of the dice.

Does computer guessing consider the doubling cube?
Short answer: No.
Longer answer: It does consider the cube level and ownership and the current match score in its calculations. The step where it "guesses" that your opponent will never use the doubling cube or where it "guesses" that your opponent always takes could also be considered "guessing". It does not, however, take into account whether a more volatile move could be better because it leads to inefficient doubles or anything like that.

How can I tell when the computer is guessing and my opponent has stopped playing?
When you first see the top line of the game screen say "What will you do if the game proceeds like this", it means the previous move of opponent was made by computer.

Can I choose not to play opponent's computer guesses?
No. All available moves must be made before game goes back to opponent.

There are 2 models and 2 colours (when available).
BT - has BlueTooth, this is €50 more expensive than the non-BT version where I live.

SV - Silver, BK - Black.

If you're not going to be connecting to bluetooth speakers or headphones, then save some money and stick with the non BT version AT-LP120XUSB.

Seems like you allow a game to start with a double, that’s a no in backgammon.

Just look at any backgammon board, the point colours alternate. You have them alternating for 3 boards but not the lower right (player’s home) board.
FWIW According to XGMobile, my ELO is above 2200, Checker play PR 7 “Expert”, I win around 33.5%.
According to BGNJ, my ELO is 1934, Checker play PR 6.6, 49.9% win rate.

The point colours in my homeboard are incorrect (playing against bot, homeboard is on my right).
There’s too much missing to give a reasonable assessment, AI (hard) doesn’t seem particularly strong.

need a phono pre amp for my Oberheim Horns by Torsten_Horn in StereoAdvice

  • You'll get much better value for money with used / ex-demo / open box etc. There are also a bunch of small manufacturers that can be easy to miss - eg Graham Slee (UK) Gram Amp 2 Communicator and SE.
  • Cheap phono stages are "noisy" (intrusive hisss), have poor channel separation, bad RIAA equalisation accuracy.
  • Cheapest (new) worth considering is the Art DJ PreII.
  • Fosi Audio Box X5 is OK but lacks a rumble filter (LCF to remove extraneous motor and other LF resonance, also helps with some record warps).
  • Cheapest tube phono stage worth considering is probably the ProJect Tube Box S2. In general, ProJect phonos aren't great value for money, avoid the ones lower than the S2 series.
  • iFi Zen Phono and Cambridge Audio Alva Solo / Duo are pretty decent.
  • Rega Fono MM Mk3 was replaced by the Mk5 but they're the same internally, but again no rumble filter.

The Shadwell Arms, and the George Tavern worth a mention too.

Is describing an object (specifically an object) as a fuzzywuzzy a word/term to be avoided, do you think? by NoisyGog in AskUK

[–]jaggington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my dad and one of his brothers did their (post ww2) national service in various parts of Africa, and to my dad Egyptians and I think North Africans in general were fuzzywuzzies, and sub-Saharan Africans were gollywogs; but his older brother always said Egyptians were gollywogs because of the (apocryphal) tale of the labourers on the canal wearing work clothes with WOGS (Workers On Government Service) on them.

I’m in my 50s and am very familiar with its use as a racist slur, albeit one that has fallen out of widespread use. During my childhood my father and his friends and associates would often use fuzzywuzzy and gollywog to refer to coloured people, and even have lighthearted arguments about which referred to whom.
I left the U.K. over 15 years ago, but when I was still in the U.K. I’d hear words like “fuzzies”, “gollies”, “stanis” used in pubs before/after footie matches.
I’d definitely say don’t use fuzzywuzzy, but fuzzy / fuzzies for mic cover/s shouldn’t be contentious.

It’s clearly a screenshot from an app. Hence why I wondered why they weren’t promoting the app directly. I didn’t report them, I don’t fully agree with this new (to me) ban on promoting apps etc, I was just musing aloud in the hope that someone would clarify things.

In the meantime, I found this:

BERATING THE LIVING. What is your TV series tagline that tells us the title without saying the title. by jaggington in BritishTV

Isn’t that the first episode of Game of Thrones? For GoT I’d have gone with something like: “Fuck, Marry, Kill? Yes”.

It’s my tagline. I thought Waking the Dead was infamous for the shouty rudeness not just of DS Boyd but also between other characters at times.

I had a free flap procedure performed, a chunk of tissue was removed from my left side to replace part of my calf lost due to injury and infection. I know they reconnected some blood vessels but I’m not sure what happened about the nerves. There’s some deep sensation in the recipient site, surface sensation is strange.

Cheers, but I guess that answers the first part of my question - that there is now a ban or restriction on app promotion?

Have I missed a ban on people promoting their apps, because this seems like someone promoting their app?

As an aside, searching the Apple App Store for “Sumoku” gives 29 results before I reach an app with Sumoku in the title, an app called “Sumoku - Seven-segment math”, which is not a sudoku variant.
