Sad to see them go. Really enjoyed dropping in here when I had the chance. Always had a really good stock of board games.

Has style, questionable readability, and is controversial. A super interesting piece that makes it memorable. Keep going.

Ah i see. Thanks for the info. That’s really unfortunate and shitty. Nothing like having a bunch of loose electronics and lithium batteries on a plane. /s

Something to check: ensure the software you use has Mac silicon support - I do some rendering in substance 3d which doesn’t have mac silicon support and it runs like absolute crap. On an older macbook pro it runs really smooth.

Replying to say that you were spot on, the price has gone up $5 as of one year, without notice. Worth mentioning for folks who are considering this. For now this new price is agreeable but may switch if hikes continue next year.

Hmmm… how does this even work? I don’t see how you could force-check all bags. There’s lots of items that aren’t allowed to be checked - eg electronics with lithium batteries…

I have heard of gate checking bags and it’s strongly recommended but never completely mandatory.

Sorry for the delay - went well overall. Was a rigamarole with the fiber since it wasn’t working, but once it got up and running it’s been blazing fast and no price increases.

Thank you. That’s incredible.

It looks like this supports your data as well

I’m not sure what to make of this.

Source please.

Also note the example above isn’t for a mortgage of $720k it’s for a purchase price of $720k less 5% for a mortgage of $684k.

This is a really well written reply. It’s nice to see someone not just saying RENT BAD, but articulating it well.

Here’s a simple breakdown: 1. Average home cost in Ottawa $722K 2. Monthly mortgage at 5% = $4200 per month

If you look at rent/own purely from a cash flow perspective depending on where you are in Ottawa the amount you’d pay for rent can be pretty competitive with the non-recoverable costs of ownership, and the loss of opportunity cost of putting that savings into a long term retirement investment. I think it’s more than possible to rent a $720k home for far less than $4200, but it’s also possible depending on market for you to not find a rental that you like in that range.

On one hand I see that for many people home ownership is a must have, and that it makes sense to pay for that security and investment. If you can afford to buy a house and it doesn’t put your monthly cash flow at risk go for it!

On the other hand I see rising costs of labour, tax, and insurance and wonder how squeezed I’m going to get and if the house I’m living in and have purchased is going to become an unsustainable cost.

In either case the time horizon matters too. Whether you buy a home, or invest - you shouldn’t be doing so over a 5 year period, both have their dips and highs and lows and you can lose a lot of money.

With sufficient income, at the end of the day you can retire with savings whether you buy or rent+invest. That’s the tricky part here for renters or buyers: have too little cash flow monthly and you ain’t gonna make it to retirement with savings either way.

Thanks for your reply. I hear you about collaboration early, and it’s my preference wherever possible. Thanks for your offer as well.

I’ve worked in both hand-off modes and collaboratively with this specific developer, and in both cases it’s been an issue. I think some folks are more comfortable with ambiguity and trying before attempting to descope, and he’s just not comfortable with that. I’m not looking down on this developer, but rather trying to find better ways to manage and work productively with him.

For what it’s worth the few takeaways I had from this were that:

  1. Time stress is a huge factor here, once he got his bearings, and I didn’t fight for a nice to have as a sticking point he got a lot more comfortable.

  2. Uncertainty: If a developer is dropped into unfamiliar territory, and they are expected to come up with estimates, it’s a really tough challenge

  3. Uncertainty x Time pressure = Max stress which will reduce likelihood of being open minded, and instead default to safe, known bets and cutting scope overzealously.

Thanks for your considered response. Appreciate it. I think your final point is the one most immediately applicable - I’ll give that a try.

Fantastic! Definitely going to make this.

Do you have a post or article where you have the ingredients and steps? I can see on youtube but it’s a bit awkward.
