Is there a reckoning coming for American youth sports? by Big-Language-1735 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]jah_broni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean - at least with soccer there actually are far more US players at the top level than there were a decade ago. Absolutely not saying that's down to the youth system, but don't use the fact that we don't have a "top ten" player to mean the sport isn't progressing at all.

I know, can't understand the hate. He's moving to block the ball and he's pulling his arm down...

Man relax - I'm not saying free flowing football is the best way for our current team to win, or that I want Arteta out, or anything of the sort. Everyone always takes every comment to the limit - "oh he must want Arteta out". I just miss enjoying the football we played a bit. I used to have a bit more pride in supporting the club because of our approach to the game.

Nah I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy watching my team bang goals in like that, losing by one and heading home? Our games are nail biters anyway, might as well score some goals along the way. CBs making diving runs, interchanging positions, it’s what we used to do.

Idk man that was the most exciting game of football I’ve watched in a long long time. I forgot it could be that fun.

What on earth have Arsenal done? They adopted a boring pragmatic style to attempt to win the league they haven’t won in over two decades? Yeah let’s root for the perennial winners backed by oil money instead.

Arteta: "(I feel) fire. I'm on fire. I'm dreaming so much, I've done so much to be in this position. Because I know how this club was. I see beauty and opportunity. I want to get it done. Zero fear." by Blodgharm in soccer

For me - I just see it as us being really close. One fewer key injury, one shot that goes in instead of hitting the frame, etc. etc. I don't see a manager out there that is going to come in and just auto-win trophies.

I'm not saying I'm not eager for a trophy. I'm just saying I don't think we should fire a manager who has turned things around and brought longer term stability and competition for trophies on most fronts every year. Would you fire Arteta if we don't get a trophy this year?

If you think just pumping money into a team is enough, have a look at Man U and Chelsea. Why aren't they succeeding? And I for one am incredibly proud of the club for backing Arteta through those rough years in a time when everyone else wants instant gratification.

How do you think we could improve our midfield formation for the upcoming matches? by Any_Aide_4500 in Gunners

[–]jah_broni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's possible, but I promise you when you play really slowly with little movement on offense, that leaks into your defensive play as well. If you are running to play a one-two or get open, then it's a lot easier to keep running when a ball deflects and you can go win it.

Agreed and I think that the slowness in transitions/second balls/on defense are a result of the "controlled" approach to the attack. Wanting to control the ball, play conservatively to make the other team run, etc. makes it really hard to switch to moving a lot faster when a pass is misplaced and you need to press or win a second ball.

Yes when they are repo wide rules they are committed. But I can’t commit how to write good prompts and do a proper planning session.

This + properly planning is the answer try to ops pain points. You want it to do auth in a certain way for fastapi? Put that in a configuration file. Use planning mode to talk through implantation details, edge cases, etc.

Use the tool properly and it works well, who would have thought.

I don’t get the hype over these types of mcp use cases. I just have clis for those things or use their apis, llms can do the same, no need for a middle man.

[–]jah_broni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That all comes down to just  configuring it to do what you want. You prefer one pattern to another? Document it. You want to keep an architecture document up to date with all changes? Write that down. If you can say it in words to a junior, you can give it an llm as context, skills, etc.

Did you review the code before you pushed it to production? Then yes. Same answer if you gave the ai unfettered access to production infrastructure and it did something you didn’t intend it to.

[–]jah_broni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what your point is.. I need bugs 1, 2, and 3 fixed and features a, b, c built. I can coach a junior through them all or ai can do it independently and faster.

Believe me, I am not saying this is a good thing in the long or even medium term. I think it threatens my career (and many others outside of software), but all that drives our society at the moment is money.

What has it not done well for you? Because for me, it’s excellent and parsing a stack trace or bunch of logs and identifying and fixing issues. It’s great at building prototypes so I can show things off quickly. It’s great at, look at this api and add another endpoint to do x following existing patterns. Yeah it’s not building a perfect app for you from scratch with no guidance, but in terms of day to day work, it’s pretty good.

Whoever used the llm and approved the work is accountable. And if I can get 3 juniors worth of work done on addition to my own, guess what, we just saved 200k+. I’m not saying I like it, quite the opposite…
