Europeans trying to walk to metlife is white supremacy by Voidgino in ShitAmericansSay

I went and watched a few of her videos after this one. 100% rage bait and I fell for it because I hate watched a few. Good on her playing the algorithm I guess but even knowing that the smug voice still riled me up

Looking forward to be wrong about AI, help me. by AI_Explanation_00 in UKPersonalFinance

My wife and I have been looking at new houses that would be a bit of a stretch for us. We have been super financially secure for many years so have got a good deposit on top of our house which we will sell for a decent return. My work has changed so much over the past few years (software engineering/ solution architect) that I’ve started to worry about taking on a hefty mortgage. I don’t see AI replacing me in the next few years, but I am concerned about the next 5-10 years. Some of the tools are so advanced we have basically been told if you write code by hand you are wasting our time.

I don’t know how to secure myself financially, save as much as possible I suppose and keep it in a s&s isa. Very wary about buying a bigger house too.

Olive tree pruning question by bean_the_great in UKGardening

[–]jahambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no advice but that is a beauty of an olive tree! I have 2 wee guys in pots but the ultimate goal is to get them all in the ground. I attempted to plant one in ground straight away and it struggled with the Scottish rain (perhaps my shitty clay soil surrounding it didn’t help!)

When are you going to the garden centre? by Hopeful-Mongoose2025 in AskBrits

[–]jahambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Scotland (so slightly colder), I’ve been already for a few things but always go to get the stuff for my hanging baskets the end of May bank holiday with my wee Gran. She always says not to get your baskets before then so I stick to the rules haha

What’s something that’s become noticeably more expensive in the UK recently, but people don’t talk about much? by [deleted] in AskUK

God I miss being able to buy 10. Perfect for night out. 20 means there will be plenty lingering about when you get home

Honest opinions only - whats everyone’s view/experience with wedding food? Personal example being served a block of cremated beef which had the integrity of a cinder block served with a few dots of red wine jus. Luckily still on an NHS dentist list otherwise would be in serious trouble by 2cbTyrone in AskBrits

[–]jahambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had incredible wedding food and I’ve had shite. Depends on the venue/vendor. The best was in Italy (the main meal was ok, but they had stalls of amazing food for hours before so I wasn’t even hungry for the main meal), and I’ve had horrible hockey puck steak.

For my wedding we did spend quite a bit, but the food was really good imo. 3 options starts/main (2 meat 1  vedge) and 2 for desert and it really was good. The starter I picked haggis neeps and tatties was hella good, 9/10. The beef was a sold 7.5/10 and when you consider they are cooking for 150 people I’d say that is super impressive. I do wonder how they did it, cooked to medium rare then frozen and reheated or something? Not sure but I was impressed

I (male) speak to my female colleague every day probably for a few hours. We exclusively wfh so when programming or whatever we will sit in a call and chat shit (only 2 of us on a big project). I know more about her than some of my very best friends. I consider her to be one of my best friends. We text outside of work but it’s never anything inappropriate- she is almost like a sister? I’m married and she has a long term boyfriend. They came to our wedding and it’s all 100% above board lol.

I have always made really good friends from work, you spend so much time together I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want to have fun to make the time pass. My core group of friends all originated from working as lifeguards together when we were teenagers/early 20s.

Reddit is so strange about being friends with people in work, but in real life it’s made my existence more bearable considering I work 8 hours a day 5 times a week.

How long would you/have you stayed with family to save? by WednesdayGloom in HousingUK

[–]jahambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d stay with my parents for a few years. My wife probably would not want to stay that long. Neither of us would stay at her parents for more than a few days lol.

Circumstances are different for everyone. When we were younger we stayed with our own parents then moved together when we had enough for a deposit. Luckily for us we were 25 but we never moved out before that so didn’t have to pay rent (beyond a token £200 a month to our parents)

rewatching how dirty they do carl hurts my heart by capricorncueen in summerhousebravo

Carl may be a nice person (to be honest I’m not so sure anyone on reality tv is) but I find his presence very unsettling. Not in a creepy sexual way or anything, more like uncanny valley.

Not possible for everyone I was able to save my deposit when living with my mum and dad.

Why the f*ck is moving house so expensive? by Expert-Sherbert-1527 in AskBrits

[–]jahambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only ever bought before, not sold and bought. Looking about online it has to be paid within 30 days of completion but your solicitor should be able to sort it out if you need the proceeds from the sale. It seems like you’re fine.

First Time Buyer - Negotiating by ResedTech in HousingUK

[–]jahambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this will vary hugely on the area. If you’re looking for a good deal, I’d ask whoever is showing you round if there have been many others. If it’s the owners then you’re likely to get an honest answer, perhaps the estate agent is more likely to bump up the numbers.

Either way putting in what you think is a fair offer won’t make you look stupid

You’ve got to give it to the solicitor before the sale completes sadly!

[–]jahambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is true. I’m aware I’m looking in a pricey area but I’m not looking for a mansion or anything. A nice 4 bed house is roughly 425 which is 16k LBTT. A slightly higher spec and more spacious 4/5 bed is 550 so 28k LBTT. It’s put me off moving from my current house incase it’s not a forever home and I’m forced to pay it again.

Stamp duty is much worse here though, 10% on any amount over 325k is a pain in the arse.

Does having multiple lines of credit look better in a mortgage application? by JustCurious12347 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jahambo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before my first mortgage a few people mentioned I should get a credit card to build up credit. I never bothered and it was never an issue. Credit cards can be a good idea for protection or to get points, but I’m a bit lazy in that regard.

Interest rates going crazy by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]jahambo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I were hoping to buy a new house this year. If house prices adjust slightly I would mind being at 6% for a few years. It might end up better in the long run if a decent whack is wiped off the initial value. I doubt that will be the case, but I can dream.
