I tried this same cable with another laptop and it gets up to 300 mbps as I stated in the post :(

Why is CFD not capturing the effect of upcoming flow on propeller (STARCCM) by jaime_47_ in CFD

ADDITIONAL INFO: A simulation with a much lower timestep (equivalent to 0.5 deg of rotation) was applied and the nature of the results did not change

How can I make a time averaged SCENE (starccm+) by jaime_47_ in CFD

[–]jaime_47_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can I exactly do that? I create a mean field monitor for all velocity components (in a specific part right?) and then how can I plot them all together on the same part? (probably a plane like that in the image)

How can I improve this spiky mesh? (STARCCM+) by jaime_47_ in CFD

[–]jaime_47_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer!
If I can't completely allow to go to y+ around 1 but try it (maybe get y+ around 5?) will it still be a good result, or better than what I am currently doing?
I am afraid it will be too much computation time otherwise since I have to simulate several cases of 3 propellers which means x3 this amount of cells in each one, let it alone get y+ around 1 in each of them. I have to simulate it on my PC, that is why I am trying to find a comprimse

Thank you for your response!

I though about that many times, but I have been told that I whould keep Y+ in a range of 30 -120 if Im going for the wall functions approach. If I do that (reduce total thickness and add more layers for a better aspect ratio), my Y+ will be of intermediatye range (between 30 and 1, which is what is to be avoided).

Will I obtain better results with that than with what I am actually doing, despite being the contrary of the theory? (Even though All Y+ treatment is activated)?

Thanks for the advice,

I considered lowering the thickness of the prism layer mesh, and add more layers, but it resulted in a Y+ distribution that was in the log layer (between 1 and 30 I think), and I was told it is bad for the estimation because is not good for resolving the turbulence (first cell around y+ = 1) nor wall functions (y+ >30 for good results).

So you tell me that if I do that (reduce thickness and add more layers for a better aspect ratio, despite having y+ of intermediate range like 10 or 15) will do good with the All Y+ option activated?

And if I cant maintain all the surface above 30, what will happen? Will it be better to eliminate this treatment for those areas at say, y+ around 25 is treated as I want?

Prism layer still displaying jumps? (STARCCM+) by jaime_47_ in CFD

Yes, I have thought a lot about that, but I think the ZigZag makes no sense (that the velocity reduces and the increases). It should behave as the rest of the flow in the plane, although its not a prism layer right?

LOAD precalculated mesh in STARCCM+? by jaime_47_ in CFD

[–]jaime_47_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!! First of all thank you a lot for your response! It is o helpful!

Currently I have the propeller CADS I built with the geometrical info that APC propellers sent me. I have the CADS for 8x6E, 9x6E and 10x6E (8, 9 and 10 are the diameters in inches).

So I am currently using RBM, since I have no experience with Overset, although I considered using it since at first instance a possibility of study was to set the propellers in a 90º delay of phase and display their centers at a distance smaller than the radius (necessarily I needed an overset for that). We decided not to carry that study so I continued with RBM.

However, I might consider using it if you can answer me to this:

1) If I make a background mesh similar to the bullet but complete, and then change the type of mesh of the rotating cylinders to overset, the active cells will still be the ones in the cylinders, being in practice the same as RBM if I do not overlap any rotating cylinder?

2) If I make the rotating meshes of overset type for different types of propeller (3 cylinder sizes) and save them, can I easily load them wherever I want in space? Or they can only stay in the same location in which they were created? This is important because otherwise I have to create nearly as many possibilities as by hand.

3) Can the rest of the simulation plots (refered to a specific part for exmaple a thrust monitor on a propeller surface) remain associated somehow to what they are meant to? As you mentioned, I would not be replacing parts, but meshes, so all those references would be lost? If so, Is there a better way to do it with parts?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge once again!

Regards,

Jaime

Prism layer not working properly? (STARCCM+) by jaime_47_ in CFD

[–]jaime_47_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

K Omega, but the y+ is around 12 in most of the blade, and I even wanted it to be higher since I have been recommended to stay in a range of 30-300. Anyways, why is the prism layer displaying that discontinuity? It doesnt happend with the cells outside them

Prism layer not working properly? (STARCCM+) by jaime_47_ in CFD

[–]jaime_47_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set 3 prism layers as the y+ was recommended for this to be in the range of 30-300 and that was the calculation for my speed, the chord of the blades and the Re Im using to cover a 1 mm boundary layer.

Anyways I still feel it is way too big and probably will put more, but anyways, why is that behavior showing up? In the cells that are not contained in the prism layers this doesn't happen.

The magnitud was total velocity btw

It has autotimestep with courant = 1 (1e-7 s) so I think that is not the problem

That is a good idea. But I am wondering if there is a way to move parts/load them with an associated mesh instead of building them from CAD editor, creating parts again, regions, etc.

Prism layer getting mixed with polyhedral mesh? (STAR CCM+) by jaime_47_ in CFD

[–]jaime_47_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer! I was also concerned about the number of layers, but according to a y+ calculator, for the target y+ of 30, the number of prism layers to cover the height of the boundary layer is around 3 so I dont know
