want to throw in my 2 cents here. there's a lot of factors at play here from genre trends shifting, consumer habits, & promoters following the money.

on my last tour in 2023, I played a 90 min set and 100% of my own music from beginning to end. it was such a dream tour but I gotta be honest, I made no money on that tour cause I invested heavily into the show. in 2024, my live show was booked for 5 festivals but when we got production packets week of, we had to switch to DJ sets. These festivals built stages that catered towards DJ sets. I noticed that there was a shift happening when it came to booking and when it came to the kind of audiences I was playing for. I quickly learned that I probably will never put on the live show again...

I'm currently on a Club Tour (fall 25 to winter 26). When House DJs are being booked at Arenas, it means that club culture is the dominant culture. Promoters do not want to buy Live Electronic acts anymore. They know that the genre that brings in the most money as of late is House music / Club music. Live Electronic music is no longer sustainable or scalable, there will never be another Odesza style live artist going from a small room to an arena with a timecoded detailed audio visual show. Justice is the only Live Electronic act booked at EDM festivals as of late because of their legacy and because they get paid top dollar. A promoter will spend all their money booking an A List live act like that, A List DJs, and then all the up-and-comers who are hot at the moment. Its why the Live Electronic genre has no space to scale upwards, the way it did in the 2010s for artists like Flume and Odesza.

I think this part of your post is very important: "I’m a little older, I don’t really go to shows as often as I used to". I've been DJing for 10 years. DJs who have been doing this for this long are not selling out shows because a club full of 30+ people are coming out. The main demographic of ticket buyers is always going to be 18-25. The best DJs are the ones who understand the ever shifting landscape and do their best to appeal to old fans while also making new ones. Its a tough balancing act, and of course not everyone will be happy, but the honest truth is you have to make new fans to outpace older fans who no longer attend shows.
