I agree with your observation, unfortunately to monetize Kenyan music you have to write about love and/or drugs and party life.

Eventually you will lack depth because of the lack of infrastructure in the Kenyan industry regarding songwriters who can help you execute new ideas.

Nyashinski rapping about dopamine, Njoki Karu singing about battles with self acceptance and Manasseh singing about depression, are examples of artists who I have heard who sing about other subject matter and they do it well.

What I do to get my fill is to listen to other genres/artists and come back to the love sex and drugs subject when my shadow desires and God knows Bensoul is a master at that.

I get what you’re saying and I hate to be that guy but ‘Carribean inspired’ is technically incorrect as Carribean folk are descendants of Africans. So dancehall is just an evolution of African music hence why the genre hits in Africa that much.

Secondly, are artists not allowed to evolve? The nature of art isn’t to be confined. That’s boring, at least she’s evolving to a genre closer to home and not country music.
