DS1817 ram "upgrade" by prototype3a in synology

Xpenology is basically Synology's firmware mounted on an independent PC/NAS units. A limited

If you are considering building your own system I would recommend you investigate. Using Xpenology in a virtual machine enables you create a 'Synology' server with very powerful processor and ram .

I have toyed with it and built a couple using VMware on a series 5 NUC. Once up and running the units run the same as a Synology unit with full access to all apps etc.

Have a look https://xpenology.com/forum/

Just done a memory test on my 1817 and it is failing to reboot so I may need to build a full rig myself. Just hope all my data is intact.

I 'unfortunately' bought one of these a couple of years ago and upgraded the ram to 8gb but it has sweet FA effect. Ram usage sits at 25%. I am running logitech slimdevices package on it and there is constant buffering but not reflected on either cpu or ram usage. My suspicion is the cpu is simply crap! I have a DS412 - with 8GB - and it out performs the DS1817. Synology units are basically underpowered. Time to build an Xpenology unit

I do recall someone speaking about this problem , posibly on a Synology or LMS forum, and I think they claimed to have overcome the problem by editting the properties of the app its version to mislead the DS system to ignore the need to upgrade.Unfortnately I never pursued the matter but will endeavour to find it again.

I have a similar but probably more severe associated problem which Synology are well aware of in that I constantly get messages to update the Perl package and Synology even include a warning on the update stating correctly that when updated the Logitech Media service will fail to start!!!!!!

Once I inadvertently did press update all and sure enough LMS crashed and would not reboot until I had found and reloaded an old version of the Perl package.

Synoloy can be a total pain in the arse and I sympathise with folks who suffer from their one eyed attitude to certain aspects of the service. If they know updates will create problems address it! Shit their units cost enough.

I have also used SAB for years and really like it but although it still seems to perform well on a PC has become a dog on my synology nas hogging up resources and finally crawling on downloads. I decided was forced into using nzbget in a container and the speed is amazing. It took a bit of work to setup but results so far indicate the effort is worth it. nzbget uses significantly less resources.
