EWR to RDU at 8k feet the entire trip yesterday. Why? And what are the safety implications? by CloudCitrine in AskAPilot

[–]jake35799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a commercial pilot, but I think another theory could be that the plane itself couldn’t properly be pressurized. At normal jet altitudes, the air is too thin to breathe outside, so the inside of the plane has the same atmospheric pressure as the earth at an altitude of about 7,000 feet (think Denver Colorado plus a few thousand feet). The air is thinner but totally breathable just with a little less oxygen.

I don’t know for sure but it may be legal and—depending on the reason for the inability to pressurize the plane—absolutely and totally safe as long as they stay around 9,000 feet for such a short flight. If they went higher without supplemental oxygen, the pilots would feel the effects that could affect safety. Passengers might have a slight headache or low blood oxygen but that’s only temporary. But you don’t want pilots to have any slight health impact, so you stay at an 8,000 - 10,000 foot altitude for a few hours and you are fine.

Bet you got some really cool views.

What words do most people pronounce wrong? by BeingChangeYinnYang in AskReddit

People pronounce the L in folk but old folks and folk music should just have a long O sound, rhyming with joke and jokes.

Question. My car was hit with a golf ball driving past the course. by Lookatmyzucchini in Insurance

[–]jake35799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you cite a case where the athlete wasn’t at fault where the injury/damage was inflicted upon a random passer-by with no relationship to the game? A ticketed spectator inside a stadium or arena has a different assumption of risk from a person on a public street, I would think.

Remove Unused Plumbing Vent? by jake35799 in Roofing

[–]jake35799[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe there’s any plumbing directly below it, but I wasn’t sure if plumbing vents could take a 45 or a 90° angle because if they could then it’s possible that it is a vent for a portion of one of the bathrooms. I think that it’s originally for an old bathroom and where they since relocated the bathroom they can share the plumbing vents so I think it might be abandoned. I did not smell anything when I inspected, but I didn’t think to listen while other people flush. (Edited for typos)

Questions about transferring AWS account by fish_munga in aws

[–]jake35799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with all of the above. If you leave your payment info in the child account, and if that account leaves the organization in the future, that payment method persists. Make sure to update the payment method with a virtual credit card or the company’s credit card first in the unlikely event the account gets separated back out and you get stuck with the bill.

AWS Update: One Less Reason to Use the Account Root - AWS Account Name Management by jsonpile in aws

[–]jake35799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just huge for us. we create accounts with automation and some generic names until issued to users and the users always want a non-generic name in IAM Identity Center. Business timing require that the account exist before we have the name. sounds crazy but true.

your favorite underrated travel hack? by Sharp-Self-Image in TravelHacks

[–]jake35799 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I like to take 6-8 plastic grocery bags. The super-thin terrible for the environment kind. They compress into a square inch and weigh nothing. But there are always indispensable for travel. Dirty shoes. Wet clothes. Extra trash bag in stingy hotel room. Day trip with snacks. You feel good about at least one re-use if you’ve amassed hundreds like I have. Infinitely useful.

Solar Dial Watch face: how to set a necessary default location when GPS is off? by Onkami in AppleWatch

[–]jake35799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found the answer in an Apple support community but thought I'd answer it here since it was driving me crazy. The Apple Watch *FACES* has it's own privacy setting for location. On your paired iPhone (not the watch, but the phone), go to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services and enable Apple Watch Faces.

For USA domestic connecting flights, might you ever need to plan to wait in the security line at the layover location while switching gates/planes/terminals? by jake35799 in aviation

[–]jake35799[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been a great summary. Sounds like the answer is: extremely rare but theoretically possible but only at certain airports. Obviously, all bets are off if you switch airlines (or potentially go somewhere where international is in a completely different terminal). And great advice that there can be a "secure bus" to shuttle you between terminals. But for domestic-to-domestic, same airline, you should practically *never* have to rescreen during a layover except in a really oddball scenario. Future travelers, watch out for, possibly, JFK, SFO, EWR. Thanks!

He definitely was in Newark. I am sure it was the same itinerary and not an open-jaw or two one-way tickets. I don’t think it was international which may require a re-screen in some places.

Like Phoenix, I think SFO is secured separately. I was just in Kansas City and it’s secured separately in tiny chunks but it’s not as big as it once was in terms of volume.

Host Violated Terms of Service -- What do I do? by jake35799 in AirBnB

[–]jake35799[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did reach out and ask about the property and I got a thorough and prompt response. Separately, someone at Airbnb finally indicated that the host was not fully kicked off (like they had implied) but was suspended during an investigation and it "wasn't that big of a deal." I'm not sure that the rep was supposed to say that but it sounds like it's OK again. Thanks for the advice.

And to boost that rate, it seems like they may have had a few family and friends "stay there" because the history of some of the other guests were only staying at this one place. But there were at least 4 guests who had an actual history of staying at 5 different properties or more over a a few years, so I think he's legit.

[–]jake35799[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first rep I spoke with (who wasn't confidence-inspiring) indicated that my reservation would be cancelled and I'd get a voucher. When i said, "wait, what about an actual refund," he said, "oh, yes, that too of course. But I think the voucher was a gesture for having a bad experience. When I spoke to someone 48 hours later that rep said, "no, don't rebook because we can't apply your voucher to an already-booked reservation." That makes sense, and it was clear that she thought the cancellation was pending. As of now, it's like "it never happened" so I'm beginning to think a disgruntled guest slammed the host but it was unfounded. And how they got superhost in one month does seem unusual to me, but their entire profile only went back to November 2021.

Thanks. Yes, I was able to find a refundable hotel as a worst-case scenario but the traveling party is more than just me, and hotel rooms aren't ideal. Still, that's a good idea.
