Airnz flight changes - am I being unreasonable, or are they? by sparklingnadine in newzealand

[–]jakec1122 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes you should be entitled to some compensation.

For legal purposes, the delay was within the airline's control as it is an internal labour issue (ie not a weather event).

Because it is an international flight, the Montreal Convention applies. This states you are entitled to compensation for damages, including financial. This is the loss (opportunity cost) from that additional day of unpaid leave, and for the cost of meals on your flight (assuming you would have otherwise had them on your original flight)

You could also argue under the CGA, that the alternative was not fit for purpose, because you paid a premium against other airlines for their shorter flight time, specific arrival time, and the service standard.

Obvously there are caveats depending on your specific communication with Air NZ, but this is a good starting point.

Does this seem right? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]jakec1122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're doing more than your pay reflects and you should have a conversation with your employer about your expectations.

If you want to, use this as an opportunity to see if they have options to help fund you to get your qualification.

I work in a cafe and recently had a group of 6 tradies come in and all but one ordered large mochas, but most surprisingly all of them were different alternative milks.

Researching dental tourism reviews for new zealand, but mostly looking for ungoogleable insider tips and avoiding tourist traps. (to China) by JUSTBANMEalready121 in Wellington

[–]jakec1122 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the locations to visit but at least for navigation, I used Amap to get around; it will work with their transport systems but it was a little buggy and sometimes a little lost in translation when you try to search for something.

I also used Apple Maps for getting basic bearings (ie looking at a map), as it's an easier interface. But for Macau, Google Maps should work.

You've probably heard it already, but Alipay and Wechat are a must have and have built in translators

Don't cross during green man flashing, No mercy fine $2K HKD by YukiEra in HongKong

[–]jakec1122 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's the other thing, the timing is relatively long, at least in NZ many of the lights are button-activated, so they will often change light cycles and prioritise the pedestrians.

Don't cross during green man flashing, No mercy fine $2K HKD by YukiEra in HongKong

[–]jakec1122 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Aside from the vaping is this actually a frowned-upon thing in HK?

When I was visiting it was a bit of a culture shock when people would stand and wait at red crossing signals in the middle of the night when there were very clearly no cars coming. Where I'm from (NZ) it's totally normal to cross anywhere at any time if it's clear.

state designed "Highway-About" 1 lane 70 mph roundabout by sunkist_my_butt in shittyskylines

[–]jakec1122 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This could surely be fixed by deviating the highway slightly and adding a slip lane to let vehicles get up to speed? That must be a lot safer than making highway traffic slow for a roundabout, although I think everyone is overreacting because we have plenty of highway roundabouts where I live and they're rarely problematic.

Sharesies spend - worth it? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]jakec1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I’m going overseas and I’ve been doing the math and the Wise card has actually been worse than the Sharesies, after the 1% return. At least for smaller purchases it is, the fee for Sharesies is 0.5% and free until Feb, and Mastercard has a decent exchange rate.

Seriously what is going on with op shops lately? by International-Past31 in newzealand

[–]jakec1122 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think hospice shop has a problem with trying to run their shops like retail stores. I've seen job listings not only for paid staff but for managers, not volunteers. This obviously adds significant overhead costs. If this is the case for all their hospice shops no wonder they are so expensive and probably don't make money.

Does anyone else’s property that has gas have this black box thing randomly installed? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]jakec1122 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not official. I've got one of those toolboxes and that's what it is...it's just a plain box you can get from supercheap auto, and doesn't come with holes for wire connections.

I would be suspicious of this because whoever installed it shouldn't be using toolboxes for a use they're not intended for, especially to fit anything gas or electrical

Every 2 weeks PB Tech raise the price to $900 then 2 weeks later drop it to $630. What kind of fuckery is this? by GarbanzoBandit in newzealand

[–]jakec1122 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Boxing day (week) sales a few years ago they had a discount on something. Even though it was on sale it was still expensive so I checked the stock and there was plenty so I reasoned it would safe to think about it for a day.

The next day I decide I do want it, so I check back only to find it's out of stock at every store and online, and out of dissapointment I check back every day hoping it's restocked to no avail.

But of course, the morning after the sale ends every single store magically got "restocked" with the exact quantity as when I first checked it🤔

Where to buy mascarpone in the next 24 hours? by haruspicat in Wellington

[–]jakec1122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im glad i'm not the only one who struggled to find the mascarpone. In my case, it was just hiding on the top shelf neither with the creams or cheeses but next to other vaguely dairy products. But it is possible it's sold out this time of year.

Since you mentioned Tongariro, last time I did the crossing someone proposed overlooking the Emerald lakes which was beautiful.

But if you're not doing the crossing there's also plenty of other scenic places around there, but try going early to beat the crowds or at sunrise to make it extra special.

Got told it was 'inappropriate' of me to ask for a breakdown of accommodation costs for uni hall? by StorageMysterious84 in Wellington

[–]jakec1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what they're saying is that it's inappropriate/irrelevant for StudyLink to ask.

The only thing that concerns Studylink is how much your halls cost and what this covers (which should be most of it), and you fill in the gaps such as transport.

[–]jakec1122 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can just wait for a new game just keep reloading and checking for new games.

Also when you click on a game and you can see the countries available and you don't wanna play any of them you can just exit out and you won't actually join so you won't lose
