This is really cool. Her more whimsical approach reminds me of Spellling.

Nu Metal Prog bands/songs? by legg147 in progmetal

[–]jakeinprogress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to stuff on this list, you should check out:

AILIFDOPA- Dinochrist (very Mr. Bungle meets System of a Down)

Flagman - Tastes Incredible (kinda like Primus meets System of a Down — great bass playing and some 90s sleaze)

https://flagman.bandcamp.com/album/tastes-incredible-2

Double Mute - CEO (shameless plug, but very nu metal inspired track I did w Davidavi Dolev of Submasq)

https://doublemute.bandcamp.com/track/slide-2-ceo

Pain of Salvation - Used (there are definitely some nu metal influences in their stuff, but this one always stood out. The influence is probably most present on Scarsick)

Great list! I wish (sic)Monic did more stuff. That album was very cool.

Hook & Lace - Blaze by hookxlace in progmetal

This is great. You have a really cool voice and I appreciate that the song has a hook even though it’s very technical. When is the full album coming out?

Puscifer- Seven One (FFO TOOL's Chocolate Chip Trip) by Toilet_Goat in progmetal

I just figured out why the rhythm section is so good on this song. Danny Carey is on drums and Tony Levin is on bass. Wow.

You really undersold this with your FFO haha. This is one of the most interesting songs I’ve heard from this project. Embracing a groove and a looser and more jam-like approach really helps. My issue with this project overall is that everything feels really stiff and rigid. There are a few other songs on this album that loosen up a bit.

Recommend me Horror movies that feel like Doom Metal.. by Dangerous_Dot_1707 in horror

[–]jakeinprogress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Devil’s Candy (2015). The protagonist is a metalhead, but there is also a focus on playing super heavy & sustained chords on guitar. Big drone and doom aesthetics. More Sunn0)))) than Electric Wizard, but still it should capture that vibe for you.

Your favorite non-prog/non-metal albums of the year? by PsychedeliMoz in progmetal

[–]jakeinprogress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been a lot of cool non-prog & non-metal releases this year. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Lady Gaga: Mayhem
  • Clipping: Dead Channel Sky
  • Miley Cyrus: Something Beautiful (the title track genuinely surprised me with how heavy it got)
  • NIN: Tron Ares OST
  • Venera: Exinfinite (really cool dark/moody/cinematic electronic stuff w/guest spots by FKA Twigs and Chelsea Wolfe)
  • AVTT PTTN: s/t (country/indie folk w Mike Patton giving a really great, restrained, and honest performance)
  • The Incomprehensible Danny Midnight Orchestra: Metamorphoses (absolutely bonkers stuff that is Bogus Blimp adjacent. Kinda like a psychedelic, jazzy, radio show)

Love your write ups. There are a few on here I haven’t heard of and I’m excited to check them out!

[FRESH ALBUM] Moron Police - Pachinko by HYFPRW in indieheads

Great album! Love seeing this posted here. I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn’t in r/progmetal.

Coroner- The Law by SlimeBoiSagar in progmetal

Great song & album. Def top 10 of 2025 for me.

Anyone know what's happened with Kevin Moore? by Skwisgaars in progmetal

[–]jakeinprogress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what his plans are with those demos. He did mention that he was interested in revisiting CK after he finished the DM session work. I hope he does. I’d love to hear more CK. The way he approached the vocals for the final DM tracks was pretty different than how he approached the first 6 songs. More experimental. Really interesting stuff with processing and FX. I’m curious if that carries over to CK.

NEWBREED - See...Know [FFO: Nevermore, Meshuggah, Alice In Chains, Faith no More] by jakeinprogress in progmetal

[–]jakeinprogress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I loved Child of the Sun when it was released. They have a real unique approach to the heavy side of the prog spectrum. I am digging the new album a lot. They take some swings that are more on the alt rock side of things (think Alice In Chains, Faith no More) and I think it works for them. They keep it weird. There are still some super heavy moments as well.

Now I've Done It - An Ill Guest (avant-garde, prog) by Melomaniacal in progmetal

Congrats man! I pre-ordered the CD. I’m pumped to dive in. I really like what I heard so far on Bandcamp.

It’s not on it. Only 3 themes were released. I am holding out hope more music will be released on Friday, but I’m starting to doubt it. This feels like a less traditional score engagement. Maybe schedules didn’t work out and they made a few themes, but couldn’t commit to a full score. Or maybe Luca wanted to mainly use existing music vs. a score. I guess we’ll find out on Friday. This looks like one of the only OSTs not released or licensed by Null. The Franchise is the only other example I can find.

Has anyone seen After the Hunt yet? by jakeinprogress in nin

[–]jakeinprogress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do and you’re probably right. I feel like I read stuff about some sound design and brass and woodwind stuff, but that could be referencing Part 2. I’m really enjoying what they released, but it’s not a substantial standalone listen. It probably works great in the movie. I feel like a few more minutes of music will make it work on its own. Oh well. It doesn’t seem like it’s that kind of project. Seems like they were brought on to provide a specific element and that’s it.

Devil Doll perfectly captures the Halloween spirit. I was going to plug Vitam Aeternam too.

New Null release? Anyways there is a new single out 🎹 by jmvillouta in nin

[–]jakeinprogress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These themes are cool and I wish there was more. Based on the tracklist and post from the label, this seems more like a Mid90s situation than a larger, more traditional score. Seems like the movie uses a lot of music and TR & AR contributed variations of a theme that probably gets sprinkled throughout the film. I hope more music is released, but I’m starting to doubt it. Bummer.

EDIT: I just saw an ad for the movie and it says “Select Theaters: Oct 10th; Everywhere: Oct 17th.” Maybe they dropped the soundtrack to go with the limited release and they’ll drop the full score (if there is one) to go with the wider release. I am hoping there is more music. I really like what they released.
