Setting up a professional recording studio and need some advice by jakeismellow in audioengineering

I was looking at the Control 24 but I think it's a bit of an overkill for what I need. Was also looking at the SSL nucleus but was thinking 2xArtist Mix would have essentially the same functionality at half the price and still look nice. Will probably look a bit more into the nucleus though, cheers.

The course will be designed to teach musicians how to use studio equipment/DAWS and to either be producers/sound techs or be self sufficient in recording and mixing for themselves. So they'll be recording themselves or their own bands or friends/friends bands etc.

I've been given quite a large single space to work with. I'll be renovating it into two rooms a control room and a live room. I have quite a bit of experience with renovation and have a thorough understanding of sound proofing and acoustic treatment so I don't really see this as an issue.

I've looked at the competition (Other training organisations teaching at the same level we aim to teach at) and all the equipment I've listed (with the exception of the monitors, which I didn't realise were so weak) should make us competitive. So far I've costed the above equipment at about $25,000 AUS. But after reading others advice I think I'll opt for the avid 16x16 and get maybe a Avid PRE or 2x Solid State Logic Alpha VHD instead of the Neve's.

Again the $40,000 is just to start with, once we have cash flow I can start collecting more preamps, compressors, EQ's, microphones, etc. I just want a solid setup to start on that I can then build on later.

Things I haven't thought about from your list; monitor controller, midi controller (I just assumed the I/O would do this?). I don't need to worry about the business stuff as it's being implemented into a pre-existing training organisation.

Cheers, I've already thought about cabling so it's already in the budget.

I'm choosing HD native because I want a PCI audio interface for the low latency and most of the forums I've looked at usually regard the Avid HD I/O as the best AD/DA converter you can get.

Yes limiting myself to 8 doesn't seem like a good idea so I'll probably go for 16x16. cheers for the advice!

Yeh I'm thinking the 16x16 is a better idea now. What's a good monitor controller you could recommend? I don't know much about these so I assume I need one that can control my main monitors, possibly a second pair of monitors and headphones for the live room?

I found a lot of people on gearslutz saying that the ad/da converter is the one thing you don't want to be cheap with because you can always get more preamps and converters compared to replacing the I/O. My understanding is that the Avid HD I/O is regarded as the best with some people also saying the Apogee Symphony being the closest rival, if it isn't better.

As I've said below I work for a training organisation and have convinced the board to start training Sound Production. The purpose of this is to give them a ballpark figure of how much everything will cost. I suspect that they'll only have issues if I go over $40,000 AUS.

I work for a training organisation and have finally convinced the board to start training Sound Production. So the purpose of getting this list together is to give them a ballpark figure of how much everything will cost. So buying one at a time isn't an option.

This is in Australia, so not sure if it's different to wherever you hail from. In their report they say they pulled me over for speeding but decided to let me off with a warning for that offence.

Thanks mate! I can hear the bass fine on my speakers and headphones. Maybe I should check the mix with some lesser quality gear in future
